A lot of spam on MSN from RHP contacts, anyone else?

March 27 2009

We have been having a lot of problems with legit people on our list sending messages, it is spam and they have no idea why it's happening, some accounts have been hacked. Right after the message is sent it signs out, one in particular it changes their username, very odd, these people still have access to their account and have had no other complaints which makes it even weirder, it's happening on 3 different PC's of our's so it can't be on our end either. Anyone else having problems with this? The message is normally something about photos and then a web link.

Your contacts must have at some point clicked on a 'link' or 'photo' (usually a zip file that contains the virus) that they received via another infected MSN contact on their list. The virus then sends spam to people on their contact list in hope that they will click on the link too, thinking it must be OK since their friend's sending it. In fact, your contact is probably not even logged on MSN at the time when you are sent the spam :( The contacts are legit so no need to delete them but you best tell them they have a virus and check your own machine too. There should be a lot of info via Google on the topic. If you're clear, then the choice is yours to block any contacts that have failed to remove the virus on their PC. Once you block infected contacts, you won't get the spam from them but obviously also no more messages!

It seems many are having this problem. I wasnt even logged on and it had me signing in and sending links to every one on my contact list. I did a complete virus scan and found the problem, it depends what type of sucruity you have to how easy it can be fixed. Many of my friends though the links comming from me were safe, they wernt, there for giving them the dam virus also. so much for safe sex...lmao Best is to send a email to all your contacts explaining the problem and not to open any links or zip files that are sent......and if you recieve any such messages....DO NOT OPEN. A good friend of mine was over east...but his system was signning him in any way...some times up to 20 times a day....sending these links to all of his contacts....most from sites he has never heard of....what a night mare. "CLICK" safe ppl. tc

this is a virus if you google it as msn virus then you can find it and there is a repair on there for it as well if sent this on msn check 1st to see if the person is online but most important is dont open it. as i know ppl that it has fried there laptops. this has been going around for a long time know. in some severe cases you may need to re format your system which is a pain in the ass

another way to stop it until you do the virus removal is change your password and it will stop the signing in and sending of links Or go with the penguin like LRE said

We have had this in the past... I find that simply uninstalling msn then reinstalling gets rid of the virus without losing history or contacts.. If I get this spam from others, I just tell them to do this.. no problems.

well i'm pretty sure my penguin is clean.. but some of my msn contacts are still getting spam. so i'm guessing that the virus gets into other peoples windows boxes, trolls though their addys. then goes off and uses a server it's hijacked somewhere to send the spam pretending to be you/me/whoever.. tricky to stop. LRE (infection free but affected)

Yeah the days of only writing viruses that work on MS are gone. Expect to get a virus no matter what you're using. Be smart and only open stuff after you've scanned it. It's really not that hard.

I have been using MS for many yers since the dawn of the operating system. From Dos, to WIndows 3.11, to WIndows 95, win98 and then XP. But in the end i get so sick of not just virus problems, but the way MS sets up that uses up alot of resources, such as Ram, HDD space.. and the like. 10 years ago or so, i gave RED HAT Linux a go.. and yes, it was extremely hard to break away the language i know, to learn the language thats hard to learn. Suffice to say. RED HAT never crashed the whole time i had it unlike the Blue Screen of Death you'd see in 95/98 OS. 2 years ago, I discovered a really awesome software (Blender3d) which is powerful and free. After many months of delighted educational glee, i Discovered that it works best under UBUNTU Linux. So I thought.. heck, i give it a go. I downloaded Ubuntu Linux , burned it into a cd, and installed it on a new machine. And I must say, the user friendliness has improve greatly since i last saw RED HAT. The Look is slightly different than XP and it has many cool features you'd never find in VISTA. (such as mouseover a sound file, and it plays, even tho you havent double clicked it) It was extremely easy to learn and understand and i never had a crash, problem nor once got a virus, even from MSN! (I do see them but im smart enough not to click on it) Everything has their time. I beleive MS time is about to expire. And the Linux Distro's is on the rise. Simply because it was made by a bunch of people all around the world, putting little bits together, to improve its quality, and they expect nothing in return, for these Linux Fanatics, like me, and probably like you, are sick of the utter commercial crap they get from MS. Who would pay $500 for a first version copy of Vista, where it doesnt even bluddy work 100% properly? lol The change over from MS to Linux is the obvious predicition. MS is becoming unreliable and costly. Linux is getting there, but its free. Long Live Open Source!

the msn virus fixer is excellent to use and never open the spam messages even from friends.Ive been told when severe its recommended to change password as well especially if you feel account has been hacked. It is a sod to clean out as you just seem to fix it and another contact sends it too you again lol....so run the msn viral program and spybot regularly. Also heard that ie has lots of holes in it that firefox is the best and safest and you can get extra antiviral stuff thru them.

I have seen that on some of our contacts too - and most of the time it isn't a virus - but somebody has been to a website that offered extra features - and "just sign in with your MSN usernam and password". In the condition for that website it was clearly stated that they would use your MSN account for advertising - and that they would not follow MSN's terms and conditions. So make sure you only use your MSN Username and password on official MSN Websites. However to fix this all you need to do is change your password.

Dominant is right....never use yr user and password (for MSN) on a website ...It is a scam to get yr details. They then have access to your contact list. eg. sites that offer to check who has you blocked. The fix....change your password. Anything more complex..consider you may have a trojan/keylogger/password collector on a computer you use.

Yes I have had this happen a bit. Had to block one contact because it was happening half a dozen times a night. Looks like the solution is already well posted though.

Easy solution. Get an Apple Mac. Never had a virus in 10 years of using an Apple.

the MSN spamming is not a virus..it's from voluntarily giving your username and password to a site for other reasons and the site admins misuse this.
