Ageing gracefully

September 28 2009

So I was looking at my face close up in the mirror tonight, and noticed the smile lines in the corners of my eyes have exxxxxtended themselves further across my temples, and I thought.. holy shit, I'm sure they weren't like that the last time I looked, which I'm sure was not that long ago.  Upon second inspection I realised that yes, it's actually true.                                                                                                                                                                                                               As a woman who is turning 35 in a couple of months, naturally, I have started thinking more often about ageing, and how it's going to affect me.  I've been quite happy to get older, in fact, I can't wait to get older and into my forties and fifties - I reckon it's going to be awesome.  BUT.. I do think about physical ageing.  Aside from all the cliches like 'Live fast, die young and look good in your coffin', or 'ageing disgracefully', I really do hope that I age gracefully and with a smidge of class.  What about you?  Have you started noticing things like smile lines, fine lines and grey hair?  What about those less noticeable things that all add up to looking older, like crepey skin, the backs of your hands, varicose veins etc.  And what about lifestyle factors.. is there anything you did when you were younger that you now regret doing because it's beginning to catch up on you?  Like wrinkly lips and yellow teeth from smoking, premature ageing of the skin because of sunbaking, and all that stuff.  Blokes.. balding and thinning on top, yet more hairy around the ear and nose region? (lol!)  Women.. do you think you will let your grey all come through naturally?  What about grey pubes??? omgawd.. please say it isn't true.  How confronted are you by ageing, if at all?   Trixie.

We all age, unless one lives recklessly beyond the extreme. Women have children and a man's chest slips down to his waist. Trying to stay perpetually young comes unstuck when one passes beyond the point of no return. So I think it's best we accept the inevitable and allow our expectations to move with the change. Trading in partners for a younger model is trying to deny the obvious, and can't hold water indefinitely when the bucket has a hole in it. But then you're still youngsters in my books.

Me now verses when I was 20.   The negatives: I bit less hair and a bit of grey. a few wrinkles - mainly when I smile. two fillings and one root canal. a bit of extra hair plucking. twenty something year old women don't usually give me a second look.   The positives: Less body fat (working on under 10%), over 30% more muscle (hitting the gym more regularly) Several black belts in martial arts.  Competant skier.  More physical flexibility. Over 1000 times more assets and 26 times more income and make more money while I sleep than I do labouring day to day. Over 600 times more sexual experience.  Knowledge of how to bring a woman to orgasm (usually, sometimes multiples) Increased communication skills and confidence - now I can talk to a woman without drooling. More likely to clean up my own crap.  Able to cook, run a washing machine and iron a shirt without burning it.   You cannot stop aging but you can decide the state of your body and your mind barring illness.   I do miss those twenty years olds though even if they do talk a lot of crap, don't know what they want and need to be taught how to orgasm properly - I know - how about a thirty year old brain in a twenty year old body - that would work. (I do get the irony)

Aging doesn't confront me too much, maybe I'm in denial. I hang out with too many people fresh from highschool in my dance crew, they all assume I'm their age instead of 30. It's the asian genes, we tend to age more slowly than everyone else.   I do think I look a lot better now than when I was 20, certainly confident, much healthier, fitter, just as flexible (but I've always been very flexible, even in my most sluggiest moments). I do look after myself, I don't smoke, rarely drink and definitely no binge drinking, watch what I eat (but not militant about it, I love food too much to completely deny myself), moisturise and avoid too much sun exposure which is easy since I sleep during the day anyway.   As for the grey hairs, I refuse to get them plucked as is the Filippino tradition. I will dye my hair, since I've always done that since I was old enough to be allowed to do so, from bright hot pink to a caramel blonde, more out of boredom than to hide anything.   I rarely ever wear make up, only on special occasions or if I have a performance. Just a lip balm is all I need. I'm very lazy and I'd rather be doing other things than continually touching up make up. It usually takes me less than 30 mins to shower and out the door. My whole beauty routine consists of cleanser in the shower, moisturise once out, and brush my teeth. No anti aging potions and lotions for me.

if you are not currently  confronted by age , you soon will be ,, thats life. but to lead the media push to look 18 forever  is just a farce and highly distructive to most people . i am 44 and harlet 51 .. definate at our age we have personal and physical baggage. We both have lead a relatively care free life though the year. Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, too much sun,too much sex bad diets, kids , heart break, depression , etc etc ... but so what. Our attitude to life is to look the best we naturally can . those you enjoy our company ,, all good and well . those who dont ,, well best wishes .It really doesnt concern us at all . we have each other, always .  but to study line by line, hair by hair , day by day , is just not in our list of chores to beat ourselves into the abbiss of low esteem. lifes short ,, 45 summers ,, thats all you got ,,not 100's.......45 only get on with it ,

This is Redhotpie. Here, at least, you can be any age you want to be, Trixie... and you can photo shop those crows feet right out. It's good enough for Demi Moore.   I have noticed a couple of laugh lines starting to develop lately. But only when I have to listen to someone dribbling on. This is very common around Christmas time when you are standing near the bbq with that Uncle you see once a year.... you dont really hear what he is saying but you become self conscious of your smile... it kind of hurts when you realise you must have been smiling like that for the last 20 minutes. Yep. Smile lines in the sun. What a bastard.   Hugs Stalky

Pretty much going with the flow, but losing weight is a good thing and pleased to say i am winning that battle for now!Am going/gone pretty grey, people who havn't seen me for a while, allways comment on how grey i have gone, I blame it on being in business! thought i might do the old grecian 2000 thing, but thought better of it, the teasing around work and sites would be merciless....who needs the grief! But now also getting comments on my weight loss, some people thought i must have a serious illness!.Other side effects of aging include.....becoming more conservative and having a higher level of self preservation.I was going to go back to Mx racing in the >45yo  class, but after talking to a few others who raced that class, and hearing the fairly serious injuries they suffered and consequently gave it away. i came to the realisation that us old blokes don't bounce like the youngens, bones just get smashed to bits, so pretty much content to have a squirt around the farm, and support my eldest sons mx aspirations.Cheers Nev......now where did i leave my walking stick

Since I had my first child in my early 20s, I've often said 'playschool' keeps me young *hehe*!  In some ways, I feel I haven't aged a day since having children...perhaps it's because my life is a little on hold while they're still young and one day I'll wake up and BAM...20-30 years has passed!   I started getting grey hair before I was even 20 and it's just gotten worse.  I like to say that I'm growing tinsel for Christmas if it's been a while between colours ;)  Wrinkles tend to come on fairly slowly, but I have noticed in the past couple of years that they seem to be spreading at a rate of knots!  I even noticed an age spot on my hand the other day *shock horror*.  In my body, I actually feel & feel I look really old for my age - perhaps that because of all the children and illness that it has had to go through compared with other women my age.   On the bright side though, I have been told I look like a teenager after I've cum! ;)  Perhaps the key to eternal youth lies in the big 'O' :)
