Bachelor Pads

July 31 2008

Hey everyone! I'm planning on starting a new life as a single guy as I've just come out of another long term relationship that didn't work out. So I've got myself a new place and I'm starting to set it up and have had some great ideas in turning it into an awesome pad as a new bachelor! What I would like to know is everyone elses ideas on what makes a great pad, from both the mens and womens perspectives :) Maybe I'll hold a party there sometime :)

Hey Roger, Its funny you mentioned this, for I too, is renovating my new pad. And I, too, wishes to turn it into a Homely, but exciting bachelor Pad. One where I can be comfortable living in, as well as be the awesome place to hang out. After measuring the dimensions of the room, i drew the large scaled floor plans of the pad, and set about thinking. Creative thinking. It doesn't matter how bizarre it is, just write them down, cos ya never know, those ideas turns out to be pretty good after all? I cant do much creative play as I only just started repairing the damages (replace gyprock boards, etc ). But i can tell you this much, im damn so excited doing this lmao anyways here's some of my ideas for my Pad, that may or may not benefit you: Living Room: -------------- * Floorboards with large rugs. * Antique White or Ivory White walls * Replace Fluro Lights with many small adjustable/dimmer(?) lights * Buy one of those 1980's arcade machines, like pacman or something (wantd Pinball machine, but them too expensive lol) * Paint a strip along the wall, about eye level, with murals of a story. (Since im also an artist, i thought creating a mural strip storyline along thew walls, would make each visitor smile with delight.) Music Studio ---------------- *Install Sound proofing/Acoustics *Buy New office desk. *Get 7 bose speakers * etc etc Im sure you get the idea. I was thinking of getting a spa, but that just too soon.. lmao Trick is, search the web. i have found alot of nifty "bachelor" pads around the world, and from each, i can work out whats what, i'd like to have .. and so forth. and oh Finally, a very important one: Have portraits/paintings/pictures/god knows what else of desired theme that you wished to experience. Sure, is Fong Shooey but it works. For example, if you want to romance, you'd have romantic paintings on the wall, .. and it might come true! Sparty

lets just remember here that this is a place to live not a night club. The suggestions of HD plasma, PS3 and card table are very good suggestions but strobe lights, smoke machines i think might be going a little over the top. Working in an industry where I deal with top end market furniture in both commercial and residential environments I think would be a good suggestion, if your going to have people over/future potential partners then they are going to want to be comfy so spending a lil extra money on designer furniture will set your new place off. If your going to go down this track, try and make your bathroom and bedroom very similar to compliment the main living area as this will be a lil more inviting to those lvoely ladies you have over to uh *cough* *cough* entertain ;-) In saying that you still need to keep it somewhat masculine so having the boys toys will be a nice touch for yourself as you need to be comfortable in your own place and have things to keep you entertained when you want some time to yourself. This is some ideas that I have just off the top of my head, when I think of more i will add another reply to this topic but i hope this sets your mind thinking a little further.

Take the advise of a much older bloke - spend some good money on a high end of the market couch - make sure it is comfortable and that you can sleep on it fully stretched out - really give it a good trying out in the store - they won't like it but who gives a damn. Get yourself a good TV they are going out cheap at present so shop around and haggle like crazy and a sound systme to go along with it. If you want to remain single then get yourself a playstation or Wii be aware that a lot of women think that blokes who have these a immature wankers (not my opinion). Good cookware is a must - learn how to use it - good food and good wine will get you laid quicker than Errol. If you have a rental and can't change the lights get a couple of lamps with dimmers. A good extra large coffee table with drawers so you can hide all your crap when a lady comes over. Some fancy bowls and plates cuase the ladies love them and it shows a touch of class on your behalf - while your at it get some scented candles and candle holders. Finally for F#ck sake do not put posters on the wall - get a couple of paintings or interesting photo prints that nobody else has! Use colour in small amounts (like red or green) to highlight the lot - also a touch of class - you may be a good hard working tradey but your home can make you look like a man with class. Good luck with it!

what interesting reading here..... all sound great, expensive and boyish....yeah yeah ...know that is the point!! at the end of the day though..this is where you live.....may well be where you have your kids (dont know if any of the current respondents have any??)...and realistically if you are spending this money....are you going to be happy with the environment in 12mths, 2 yrs, 5 yrs etc....or are you going to have to change it all again? from a woman's perspective.......well mine really cos i am writing this... keep it comfy....nice furniture.....some personal effects displayed somewhere, it shows a bit about you......love the sound of what sparty is planning..!!!... music system, but remember this is home not the pub.....by all means have the boy things to bring out for a night in with the boys.......and you cant go past a cool telly, for the bluies or just a romantic night in to impress hehehe if you like cooking then a great kitchen...love a guy who can cook up a storm...... if not something functional....you have to eat after all!!! failing that...a microwave, kettle and toaster at least......now a coffee machine may not go astray either!! the bedroom......what ever makes you feel at home....it is after all your room, though cant go past nice linen...... a spa...whether in the ensuite or outside is nice...sexy nights in there....whoo hoo...or failing that a big shower...room for two, maybe even a bench in it for sexy fun...... whatever you decide to do.....the idea of going online to check out some others is a good ... have fun guys.......renovating and decorating are always fun and the end result is worth waiting for.......hope you achieve the look you are after lava xxxxx

woo hoo - great topic! Nate Burkus, interior designer on Oprah, has done over some bach pads of hollywood guys and they look great eg Jerry O'Connell's. For me, the bed is critical. Clean, crisp linen - something from a neutral palette. Generous doona and pillows. Make sure the pillows under the slips are not stained and gross. The whole thing has to make me want to climb into it with you. Some candles about the flat - nothing too pretentious, just hints that you know how to set a mood. Lighting critical too - someone else posted on this re getting rid of flouros, I agree. I'd want to see some interesting, quirky items that are very 'you' - maybe pics of travels, collectables that make you reminisce or similar - conversation starters basically. A mate has a big atlas and a big dictionary on his coffee table, so that whenever he hears a word or a country - on tv, in convos - that he doesn't know, he looks them up. I like this about him ... it's quirky. Love the idea of the arcade game - as a coffee table maybe - and as a working game. Guys and girls alike enjoy a bit of friendly competition and you never know where it might lead... :) I totally agree with investing in a great couch - comfortable, easy to clean, something you and a partner can stretch right out on, together. Nothing nicer than watching a DVD on the couch together and ending up cuddling and asleep...or even cuddling and awake ;) I could go on and on - but there are lots of good posts that have covered lots of good stuff. Good luck with it - hope to see the pics of the final product!

Have been out buying up stuff, still have to get all the finishing touches though ie. mood stuff and frames etc, will have to wait for next months pay :( Harvey Norman is loving me at the moment haha I'm not allowed to paint the place which kinda sucks, down side of a rental. Will be looking out to get a nice apartment in the city once my old house sells, until then I'll keep collecting all the finishing touches :) All the ideas are great and I'm going to put use a lot of them, now just need to invite someone over.....

ok I don't know how practical this could be for you BUT an indoor glass water feature covering one entire wall obviously would have to be custom made and cost you an arm and a leg but lord would it look good, just a massive sheet of glass with like a ripple pattern all over it with water just quietly trickling down. maybe get some LED lighting in behind to uplight with different colors? the possibilities are endless! ciao

Ok my two cents, Colours- Stick too your antique white or similar for walls and add some dark grey or charcoal tones, very masculine. As bercity mentioned good furniture above all else, (Specially good quality work bench;) Massive tip-invest in a cleaner at least once a week-seriously!!!!There is a massive difference between what a guy considers clean and what a lady considers clean. Puckpool table, is like a mini pool table but only 1m square, is a great talking point and very solidly built for lounge room gymnastics, and easy to wipe down;) Can go all the expensive entertainment units etc but word of caution, if you hook up with a great chick and she has a child (As i did) the kids love nothing more than pushing in the cones on your $3000 speakers and rendering them F@#$ED-Trust me, no one likes t see a grown man cry, and there are a LOT of very yummy mummys out there

So think of yourself like Hugh H. - as if you had to live in that one room (maybe aside from visiting the ensuite or a kitchenette). This to me makes a real pad. Enough casual communal seating like sofas or lounges. A casual chill out area. The bed (or workbench if you prefer)...made. Entertainment is the key here and go minimal on the practical necessities of life (i.e. conceal your wardrobe). A bar area or coffee lounge type area. The key though is comfort and entertainment. I guess by now you've got the main stuff. Time to visit the icky world of soft furnishings and decor items for aesthetics. Maybe the girls can assist here to get a balance. A few indoor plants shows we're not just primal in our needs. So then just time to don the smoking jacket Hugh. (Go easy on the bunnies as the guests can feel intimidated).

It's been a while since i've been in a Bach Pad, but from memory, mess and disorganisation were themes that popped up frequently.. So, not all guys are metrosexuals, we women understand that, but cleanliness is such a turn on.. A few constructive ideas for quick fixes when women visit unexpectedly (which i'm sure they will!)... 1. A great big whopping laundry basket to dump all those articles of clothing that somehow find their way onto the floor (hopefully mum, or a very nice lady friend will take care of it when it's full!) 2. A dishwasher is essential.. Apart from being a great appliance, it can also double as quick fix storage area for all those coffee cups and the odd pan you leave on the stove.. just pop them in and voila! A clean kitchen! 3. If at all possible, hire a local cleaner for an hour a week to scrub out the kitchen, bath, shower and especially the toilet (a woman can smell a neglected toilet from the next suburb!) At around $20, it's a top investment.. 4. Simple, uncluttered, functional furnishings. Some hardy indoor plants. A few decent coffee table books that reflect your personality. Candles or dimmed lighting. A beautiful goldfish in a simple glass bowl? 5. Gaming system is essential! (Don't forget Singstar and Guitar Hero for the girls... much fun!) 6. Shelving, sideboard or other organising device.. Every item should have a home.. 7. A simple outdoor cafe table and chairs.. Who doesn't like sitting out in the sun for breakfast? A good place for smokers too.. 8. Maybe not practical, but pool tables are so versatile! :-) In my opinion, simple, comfortable, functional and low maintainance is the key. Good luck with it.. Ellie..

Haha, already have a swing, but I think personally they are better with 3 people! ;) Now, are there any people out there that want to be pushed higher! hehe :)
