Quoting 'Qefenta2' concerned about the current situation in the Ukraine/Crimea? and I picked this site to discuss it on ) I asked because until recently I wasn't giving it another thought, but lately I've started noticing women reacting to my background in strange ways, so I thought I'd clarify this. How long have you been over here? Do you consider yourself a Russian or have you embraced being an Aussie?Let me try to express myself without offending anyone's sensibilities. I don't judge a person's worth according to their lineage but I have recognised that different cultures embrace attitudes that don't meld well with other cultures. I was recently in Phuket. I tried to read up on local protocol so as not to be unintentionally offensive to anyone. I wasn't successful. Many rolled their eyes at me and treated me like an idiot when I was unable to understand them. The people of Phuket try to be very accepting and congenial towards visitors as tourism is their bread and butter but when they let their guard down, I found that a great deal of deep-seated racism thrived among them. The Buddhists didn't like the Hindus, the Hindus didn't like the Muslims and no one liked the Russians. There were a great many Russian tourists on the island and they were the least popular.I didn't have any issue with most but there was one Russian man in one of our tour groups who was very loud. He would step in front of people to be the first in line or keep the entire group waiting when he was not ready to leave. I had to wonder whether this kind of behaviour was indicative of Russian attitudes (perhaps not as his wife seemed genuinely embarrassed) and the reason for their unpopular status.

Ide be very weary. I don't like what has happened with Putin and his anti gay laws so meeting someone from that country needs to be treated with caution for me. What they did to Pussy Riot is just soo incredibly wrong. Ive worked in Russia so I know how secretive it can be.

I get the tough call, I've lived OS for ever, I can poke fun of most nationalities quite well. But???? As a seasoned traveller that's a nasty generalisation. Admittedly one you've lived and you've included a disclaimer. I have also heard rumours similar. But the reality of travel, people & time isn't apparent. Quite the opposite. I adore the fact I can be proven wrong daily.

Quoting 'kinky_gemini'...this is especially true (in my opinion) about people who moved away from their countries of origin. They are often the opposites of the national stereotypes. Though I'm blunt to a fault and like going Dutch. OP, I alway wonder if guys will be attracted or turned off by my accent. No one has mentioned it though. How about you? (There are certain accents that turn me off, so I wouldn't blame anyone if it was a deal-breaker.)

but it's a known fact that Eastern European accents (male) do not sound attractive to a native English ear. Having said that, I somehow managed to lose a big part of my accent since I moved here. These days no one recognises it as Russian any more. People have asked me if I was from France or Germany or South America or even the US (what an insult...)

It's probably mostly in how you 'spin' it, kinky_gemini. Instead of mentioning it a few messages in, like it's some dark secret, consider making it a part of you that is loud-and-proud? You could list it on your profile as a 'unique selling point'? It's something you can say that not many others in Australia can, and it's something that immediately opens conversation. It's a pity some people might ascribe negative attributes to you personally based on the politics of your country of origin. I don't think that's fair and my hope is that most wouldn't, or would at least 'hear you out' on them. You may like to add those on your profile too. 'I come from Russia, but that doesn't mean I'm homophobic' or whatever the case may be... Then again, doing that could be immediately 'going on the back foot', and it would gall some people to have to do that. So you may prefer not... Your accent and nationality may turn some people off, and some people on. My advice is to accept there are those it will turn off and keep on trying to attract the ones to whom it's an attraction. That's something I've had to do myself with some of my own 'unique selling points'...

So 1st you ask if people are turned off by the fact that you are from Russia and then you say it's an insult if people think you're from America? I have never judged anyone by where they come from, but I judge you for making that statement. Next!

a stranger on da interwebs judges me... somebody please help! Quote: People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. "Humour" - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
