I probably should use them more............Well, i should just plain use them. I can respond to posts/threads, with words, that don't really convey , the intent that I've meant. In text, you miss the inflection of voice, don't see the smile when its said, and can come across as plain nasty.Ive fallen into this trap on many occasions, and only when i re-read what I've posted , feel terrible and awful. Yes, i think theres a place for them. But for someone that can write so much on the topic of emoticons, id suggest you need to get out more. See , i just did it again

So emoji's make it less likely that people think I'm taking a dig at them. Text can be easily misconstrued so they are an extra tool to create meaning. Also ....sometimes I'm lazy and don't like to type, so I just send an emoji. I'm not on my mobile so I can't give examples but I did have an argument with a friend that the one with one eye shut leering and its tongue hanging out was sexual. She said no, I said yes. She's married but, so I guess she's not a regular recipient of the leering emoji in the sexual context from guys on dating sites LOL

I really should have posted that the B&W writing is copy and paste, and that it was part of an article from The Guardian. Peachy

I hate emojis, emoticons and memes - Facebook is just a clutter of people saying not very much these days, just ''emoting'' via the aforementioned silly things. Having said that, I absolutely love GIFs. I wish we could attach GIFs to our posts here, I don't know why I love them so much but I do. Like all good healthy human beings, I am a hypocrite.

I don’t mind emoticons used sparingly. Half the time they’re too small to be legible and when they’re used in place of a sentence, I don’t bother trying. Same with multi-coloured posts. Hugs Gaz

I was not freakin' happy when I saw there was an emoji film. Dickheads, what the hell were they thinking apart from dollars. I know there have been emojis for sexual acts around for quite some time and some are funny as fuck (pun intended). I don't like them being over used or a replacement for a word. But if broaching a delicate subject, using bad humour or not wishing to be interpreted incorrectly in a message I find they are very handy when used well. I did receive an amusing phone text from a mate one day. He was telling me this story and every time a word was used that had a corresponding emoji for it he would place it immediately after said word. I wondered WTF, then he texted me just thought I'd make it easy for you to follow you dyslexic bastard. I am not dyslexic, just his humour. Bloody well cracked me up

For sure, some people get a bit carried away with them as an ending to a speech( just like the #hashtagcraze.. ).I think a bit of restraint, or finesse or subtlety is needed...but...I also reckon they're great( the basic ones, anyway ) for suggesting what mood I'm in...which is the point of them, isn't it? Before emoticons, it was difficult to convey sarcasm, satire or parody in text. Or even just general contentedness with what I've said/written. I mostly use the general smiley-face here and elsewhere for that purpose. Content and in a jovial mood. Not kidding around...serious, but in a good mood. Which is my mood most of the time.

Your smiles always suggest to me what you describe in your post. It is curious how differently they can be taken depending on how we view the person. Peachy I didn't include the part of the article I found that explained the accepted beginnings of the internet era. Invented multiple times over human history, its internet-era genesis is widely considered to have occurred in September 1982, when computer scientist Scott Fahlman suggested to the Carnegie Mellon University message board that :-) and :-( could be used to distinguish jokes from serious statements online. Shortly thereafter came the name, a portmanteau of the phrase “emotion icon”.

You've given me a bit to think on about how I view emoticons so I can answer my own question. I try not to include any of my opinion in the OP so my thoughts, and I don't become the focus of the thread. I ask because this is one of the many things that stirs my curiousity in trying to understand and enjoy myself and other people's thoughts and feelings. I love playing, and expressing myself on different levels that include colour and pictures. They give layers of emotion I could not express otherwise. Of course, everyone views them differently and that's the reason we're here today. But I was so excited when they became available on the site in 2009, I was the first to post a thread on the topic of the smileys and coloured font (thanks Gaz, good point about the font). A random memory is the time Meeka (I think it was) realised the big smiley has teeth! I'd experienced that same surprise when I realised myself, and it gave me a sense of similarity to know we'd been through that same moment. But I wonder what the meaning of having them available is if they are not used and/or appreciated. It is a wonder of mine that there is so much b&w in the forum. What happened to the shades of grey you know and the colour? I wish we had a kissy smiley on the site. :-* Peachy, has worked on limiting her bold font at least...

Quoting 'Lionsdoll1'I probably overuse them I love them 😍 best invention ever! Especially when predictive test brings ☝️ up automatically. I love 💖 emojis and gifs! Especially if I get to use ☝️ I haven’t before. A friend and I often use gifs to have a conversation or to demonstrate the weekend we may have had. Yep 👍🏻 childish 🧒 so what ? 😂😁🤭🙌🤷♀️🙊😉 That's my sort of childish, I love it. I'd be over the moon to have a huge supply available on site. They're used a lot on Twitter you know, to save letters because there is 140 limit. I used to follow Carrie Fisher and she was a big one for near incomprehensible posts because of the emoji she would use. and She was much loved for it. The fun of being a bit playful, and a bit mysterious, the right people will cotton on, Peachy, has met people based on their use of emoji! Honest.

So has the ability to edit font, maybe a temporary thing? It's still on the forum... I've been waiting for the day I can get colourful with my profile, this isn't looking good. Peachy, crosses all her bits

When you compose messages you have two buttons "save template" and "send"...except it seems save template doesn't work any more either..... even though its there... you can still create templates by going to mailbox and editing directly in template manager... but again no notification and why have the button if t doesn't work???? I still wish RHP would bring back the topic / subject line in messaging too..who's idea was it to remove that?

That's strange, the 'save' template is still working for me without any problems. Perhaps contact 'support'? Lol, I always hated thinking of a heading, so I was relieved when they did away with that! Peachy
