Financing our trip

July 04 2018

After reading the news coming out of Australia recently, we are considering using the extra space in our luggage to bring some plastic grocery bags with us. We're thinking we can sell them for $3-$5 a piece to help offset some of the costs of the trip. How acute is the plastic bag crisis? Is our price too low or does it depend on regional supply? Do we need to plan different pricing for Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales? 😁 We go to the airport in 72 hours. We are very excited. Thanks to the RHP community for the feedback, advice, and interactions in the forums. It's been a lot of fun while we've waited for our trip to finally get here. - Posted from rhpmobile

Or if you're in one of the states that the recent 'single use plastic bag' ban refers to, head to Woollies for freebies because they backed down and are offering bags for free till the 11th... Hurry, hurry! Limited time deal available... Peachy

Someone is seriously under-cuttimg the market at that price. What a race to the bottom! - Posted from rhpmobile

Its horrific. Just the other day I was forced to carry 3 items in my hands after going to Woolies. It was an outrage. Also now old people in lines at the shops are 1000% more likely to winge and whine. Not only am I forced to endure them pushing their trollies as close as humanly possible to my ass in the line in the hope that it will somehow make it move faster. I also have to listen to how inconvenient it is for them to not pollute the planet. My tip is just create a covert plastic bag black market in a local shopping centre car park. But just don't go near Aldi because they have their shit sorted with that cardboard box option. Have a great trip

Will the stores let me use my own plastic bags if I inform the employee scanning the groceries that the bags are imported from the states? - Posted from rhpmobile

There is a limit to how many you can bring in to the country. Each year thousands of people are detained by customs officials for not fully declaring their plastic bags on their way into Australia. They are really cracking down on the illegal trade in the last few weeks.Be prepared to be cavity searched.Mr Luvsilver

for the record ,not sure if all in vic don’t or it’s just the one locally but not all aldi have cardboard box option ,it’s byo or be like me and be the balancing king and hold your youngish the right way enjoy your trip coupleonholiday , also when in melbourne. ps make sure you go to a fish and chip shop (not a cafe or restaurant ) if you can, fresh is best but getting harder to find due to lots being frozen and pre battered ,order some flake ,it’s a type of shark that’s mainly only available down here ,it’s very different to most other shark and according to us super good ,fried or grilled is a personal choice ,maybe try one of each between you mr b - Posted from rhpmobile

I will limit what I bring through customs and get the rest there with a precision UPS delivery or two. I doubt the bag sniffing dogs have been trained yet. - Posted from rhpmobile

I hope you don't smoke either, because the price of tobacco here will give you a rude shock. I think it's at around a dollar a cigarette now. Friendships are being stretched to the limit..

    1. All Aldis have free boxes available (Mr B). You may just have to empty them of shelf stock first :) 2. Plastic bags aren't banned. Just you can't get the very basic ones that were for free. You can even reuse traditional plastic bags if you haven't thown them out. I did this yesterday as I still had a bag of bags in the car waiting for the plastic bag recycle bin ;) 3. If you're still desperate, a box of traditional plastic bags can be bought online for about $30/1000. That's 3c a bag! Last you years! 4. The cloth or fabric bags, won't last 50 to 100 shopping trips, to make them price equivalent to the traditional plastic bag (assuming the supermarkets could buy those for about 1-2c each). So you'll still lose money, but it's better for the environment. 5. What happened to biodegradable bags? :p - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'countrytouch' 3. If you're still desperate, a box of traditional plastic bags can be bought online for about $30/1000. That's 3c a bag! Last you years! - Posted from rhpmobile I am now going to spend $30 a week on single use plastic bags and release them directly into the ocean until they rescind this madness and bring back our right to free, convenient and hygienic shopping bags. Are you reading this Woolworths? You will be responsible for mass environmental vandalism, this isn't really about profits now is it? I urge everyone to join me in this righteous protest against corporate greed. If you don't have easy access to a waterway you can contact me about setting up a regular $30 money transfer and I will release your 1000 bags into prime marine conservation areas.

You sick puppy. My perverse thinking only extended to the idea of selling them out front to customers at 6c a bag, doubling my money, and undercutting the supermarket in the process. What? They don't like competition? Hahaha! Remember the Simpson's episode where Lisa bought people to the attention of the problem of plastic six-pack holders? Then companies saw how many fish they killed, and went out and made giant six pack holders to fish the oceans more effectively :)

*Steps on soapbox... More seriously, the problem is also the major supermarkets can't really help you pack yourselves, because their conveyor belts are not long enough (to stack a trolley load before you have to start packing on the other side), nor is there a re/packing bench like Aldi. Even when I bought my own bags, the cashier couldn't use the old plastic bag dispenser thing for them, so has to pack them on the counter, which took more time. But to her credit, she didn't put like one or two items in each bag, like they often did. I was often repacking their plastic bags on the other end, before I left, like putting the cold stuff together (even when I deliberately put it together on the conveyer). Please... However I am often still through the manned (*personed?) checkouts much faster than those on the self checkouts. And there are no pretty faces to look at/talk to there :) *Steps off soapbox...

Thanks for the prompt tip. I will make sure to ask when ordering. And a scallop sounds delicious, too. We will put any leftovers into one of the plastic bags we are importing.😁 - Posted from rhpmobile

Hehe, I pointed out IGA offer the option of cardboard boxes on a competitor's page, and after a bit of friendly banter where I put the responsibility of offering solutions 'inside' their boxes, the ones they usually crush and 'recycle', they offered the reply that they would consider it. Happily, part of that exchange did include the mention of manager's who were on the ball there. Fish and chip shops are fine places to collect cardboard boxes from... and fried oysters *wink wink* are the bomb! Rich and decadent... Suggest you lightly saturate your plastic bags with squirt, prior to return, as a solid reminder of your sexy moments in the land down under. Peachy, clicks and collects her shopping () but has to pay extra NOT to have bags

Cpl I hope you left your plastic bags back in USA. Got to try the battered Flake (fresh Victorian Gummy Shark mainly caught around Lakes Entrance). God I miss the melt in your mouth texture. If you were coming to Perth I would say pack some extra Vans off the wall slip ons size 12 US Blue and I would have paid a premium for them this week.
