Holy Fuck. I love living in FNQ. I chose to relocate here because it's devine...... Sweat dripping from places it shouldn't, Cyclones and Monsoonal Troughs, crocodiles, jellyfish, backpackers, plotting your days movements around what IS and IS NOT Airconned...... who doesn't love living in paradise😋🤗😘 You can rant for yourself, and I don't recall any southerners belly aching over their heat wave. Spare a thought that their houses and infrastructure also aren't designed for these extreme conditions...... ours all are. Now go grab a stubby and sit in the pool while you cool the fuck down🍻🍺🤦♀️

Because it's an unfair comparison. We don't run an air conditioner and use the fan minimally. Particularly not all night while sleeping under a blanket as I see on memes so regularly. They'll be first to complain about the bill when it comes in. We had blackouts several days in a row one year because of all the air cons. I do consider the beasts that suffer at our extreme use of water though, that they die because of greedy, selfish, stupid arseholes who are given permission to do that by the people who are supposed to run the country for the people's benefit. Why grow cotton in a country that has been in drought for years? Hemp would be a practical crop on so many levels with the production of paper and use of plastic destroying various animals environments. It's a quick growing durable, useful plant. A touch of info on how good it can be in so many ways. "Henry Ford's first Model T was built to run on hemp gasoline. and the car itself was constructed from him on his largest date Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. the car grown from the soil had hemp plastic panels whose impact strength was ten times stronger than steel Henry. Ford ran 40000." Peachy, ran out of thoughts for now, will likely be back...

I’m going to invoke the Theory of Relativity, to help the OP Sydney is not FNQ, so Sydneysiders complain of the heat because it is on the unusual side.... compared to what is typically expected Just as FNQueenslanders would complain about a greater number of cyclones, or crock attacks or The Theory of Relativity also applies to the rest of the long winded speech when compared relatively to the other things of which I care about significantly more on a lovely Sunday than to continue 😎🇦🇺

We live where we choose to live.Hawt btw lives in WA not FNQ. I grew up in Melbourne and left in 1986.I came to Queensland in 1990. It's only in the last ten years or so that temperatures in Melbourne are now over 40 degrees in Summer. Here it's still rare for temperatures to be over 35 degrees, but we are desperate for rain. Climate change is indeed a real concern, recently David Attenborough said we are running out of time to sav e the planet. However we can all do small things to make a difference.Already we have reduced our use of plastic bags by 80 per cent.We can avoid buying food in hard plastic packaging. Food and water are going to be,indeed already are, major concerns..we need to get smarter inform ourselves not put our heads in the sand and just hope everything will be ok. Hugs Q

have been broken all over the country this summer. I've been in the Canberra area for the last couple of weeks and have had a few long-term residents tell me that they can't remember it ever being this hot. Considering the average summer temperature here is usually about 27 to 29, I think people are allowed to have a bit of a whinge when it gets to 40. I also strongly agree with a lot of what you're saying. European settlement of this country has been characterised by a string of clusterfucks of epic proportions when it comes to land, water, and natural resource management. The political corruption, greed, and wilful ignorance is abhorrent, and yes we desperately need more people to start taking an interest in what is happening in this country politically. This is a complex thing to achieve though and you may struggle to gain traction with the approach you've chosen to use here I visited Parliament House today. I had to shake my head at the display using the words of Pericles of Athens, claiming that the work of the Australian Parliament is 'acting wisely'. There's been precious little wisdom coming out of that place for a long time now.

I agree with you. Just want to expand on one point and then dribble a lil bit more. The fact (I read in an article) that we have reduced our use of plastic bags by 80% doesn't include the bin liners people are now buying to replace them with. We still get the more solid bags with our cold food every time we do grocery shopping through click and collect even though we ask for no bags. I'd be impressed if Coles and Woolies would offer the cardboard boxes they receive with their deliveries instead of the profit they now make from from 'reusable' bags which often tear on the way home anyhow (got a couple early on) but they claimed their boxes are no good because of the way they are designed. Yet IGA manages it. We now carry cardboard trays in the car. Easy to get shopping in and out! Being a pedant has it's moments. In our household, we've replaced bin liners with every type of spare plastic bag that's big enough including the one's toilet rolls come in, lol. The empty toilet/etc rolls go to the worm farm. I bought a tumbling composter for my birthday to also help with producing compost for the gardens rather than buying it by the bag. I save soft plastic to go to Woollies for recycling because they're not accepted in bins. The stories I've seen of the fish and horse deaths have been heart breaking. Wish I could bury my head, dry earth to stick it in wouldn't be hard to find. Peachy xo

Well, mission erfolgreich! Got you all talking about it so ner! I see some fantastic ideas I hadn't thought of, using any packaging bag as a bin bag.. great. I am grateful for the lack of darts. Relativity.. yes correct, I would be uncomfortable also if the mercury headed towards 60 (whilst around 50 is normal summer for me) and yes I use air-conditioning so my rare books aren't destroyed (with the fringe benefit I get a good night's sleep 😉. Why compensate above the 26th parralel, I'm thinking it was an incentive to populate the north to relieve overcrowding and stress on resources in the south, encourage exploration and development of resources in the north without disadvantage of prohibitive costs. The prohibitive costs continue more or less, (we have a sealed national highway now, inflation has rendered any assistance laughable, the transport of goods etc is a huge expense). An example, whilst WA electricity prices are the cheapest in the nation, northern fuel costs around $1.80L, in the south around $1.10L. Thank you to the person who agreed over the cluster fuck that is resource/farming planning in this country. No comments on foreign ownership. Hmm.

I have another question. Some lawyers charge $500 to $1000 per hour... How .. I am simply flabbergasted, could this possibly be justified? Running costs of an office? Insurance? Compensation for 10 years of study/practice? (And they even charge at that rate to research something they do not know) To produce ultimately decisions. When mere mortals earn 20 to 40/hour.. I am thinking this is an unsustainable system. A person shouldn't have to destroy their wealth/well being to have a decision made. Justice/good advice is unobtainable for many I would believe as things currently are. Not everyone can access legal aid, more cannot afford private lawyers. There is a gap being created here. Solution to this problem..? Reduce the lawyers over the top pay? Change the system perhaps.. to what? Broaden legal aid access?

Okay time for a entire worm farm to be opened..not just a can of them... I started a discussion on my Facebook feed about this... lol Gender pay gap...does it exist?? If so, how is it proven other than comparing gross incomes?? Unless it’s for the same job at the same employer....because let’s be real about it, cafe A might pay award wages for their staff while cafe B for the same job pay 10% higher than the award so it’s unrealistic to compare employment at different businesses....

Ok fair enough, you don't care about something or you care more about something else at some particular time that's understandable. OMG Anti what I wouldn't do to sit down and have a right good old fashioned debate with you about this. If ever our paths cross I will be on for it. Short answer is yes and you know it. Also you have dumbed down a very complex calculation and analysis of how the figures are reached. Part-time work, maternity leave, less superannuation and casual and lower paid jobs hugely contribute to the gender pay gap. A parliamentary enquiry last year heard that 23% of men have superannuation balances in excess of $500k while 25% of women have balances less than $50k. In my industry women and men are paid the same because we have a State award. Evidence shows there is still a gender pay gap however. Why? Well maybe it's the male of the family that is going to work a night shift on Saturday night while the female stays at home with the children. Or maybe the male will continue to work full time while the female works part time to look after the children. Whatever the reason its the men that can still make more money.

So if in one case it's because the male is simply working more paid shifts, do you rectify the pay gap and pay the women more for the time that she does work? (Looking after children and doing home tasks, there is some argument they also deserve pay for that maybe, but is essentially welfare or compensation if it's coming from the government). I understand there are some high paid industries and senior roles unfairly biased towards men, and jobs that are highly women focused getting lesser wages in general. Also employers choosing men over women for a relatively equal job, because of the fact that they are less likely to take time off for children, especially if they are at a certain age. This is discrimination and is an obvious problem, but addressing that is one issue, many other groups are also discriminated against when seeking work, indigenous and older people included. But let's assume everyone got paid the same hourly rate for any job they did. There would still be a pay gap if the men happened to work more than women. So I don't understand how you fully rectify that to be exactly equal. Maybe the issue is men should be directed to take more time off work to look after children while the woman instead goes back to work. But surely that decision should be left to the people involved. Even if both work, if one does longer shifts than the other, or one is more likely to work nights or overtime, there will be a pay gap. You can only try to end discrimination or to give people more choice where they don't currently have any choice, but where one person decides to work more or less than the other freely and willingly, that is actually fair.

Hugs Q Q, lets establish that nobody is forced into any occupation in this country and that there are strong anti-discrimination laws which include gender. I accept that "caring" type roles traditionally seen as more feminine jobs are lower paid. However, correlation does not equal causation and this does not mean that these jobs are paid less because women prefer them. Here's another stat; men are 97% more likely to die at work than women. Again analysis of this stat points towards the types of jobs that men and women prefer to do as being a strong underlying factor with your example, manual labour, being right up there in the list of dangerous jobs. Perhaps the causation for the male type jobs being higher paid is in the fact they are dangerous and you are significantly more likely to die or be injured doing them. Is it justifiable that a dangerous job to attract a higher pay rate? Would you risk life and limb for no reward? As for your homelessness anecdote; in Australia 58% of homeless people are men. The gender difference in homelessness is mostly seen among older people; 65% if homeless aged 65-74 are men, 59% for aged 75+. This is despite the elderly population being skewed towards females due to the gender life expectancy gap (80.4 for men, 84.6 for women) So we've touched on 4 statistical "gaps" when discussing your point; a gender pay gap, a gender die at work gap, a gender homelessness gap and a gender life expectancy gap. Which is most important? Indeed you seem more worried that the number of women 65+ becoming homeless is increasing than the fact that more men than women aged 65+ are homeless. Homelessness is a problem, lets not make it about gender?

Or maybe the male will continue to work full time while the female works part time to look after the children. Whatever the reason its the men that can still make more money. AC did not dumb anything down, he simply asked how it was measured. Please explain this very complex calculation and analysis, I'd like to know how it is measured also. Don't hold back, I can handle myself intellectually. The stats you have quoted are meaningless at best and intentionally misleading at worst. You are comparing apples with motorbikes. What % of men have a super balance less than 50k? What % of women have a balance greater than $500k? You do realise that it is entirely possible within those stats for 25% of men to also have a super balance less than 50k right? Or even 40%? Now for your Saturday night shift work suggestion. That sounds like a couple making a reasonable division of effort decision between themselves which is taken into account by family law which says that assets earned by a couple are to be divided equally regardless of the monetary value of either contribution. Is it not? I am no expert. I'm pretty sure the super balance counts as one of those assets btw.

I think it’s important to remember the question.... But more importantly to ensure that we are addressing the same issue... When I read “gender pay gap” I read a monetary remuneration - with regard to a persons primary employment - disparity based solely upon the persons gender.... If we can agree that that is the issue we’re addressing we can then possibly move forward to addressing people’s viewpoints on how we establish that it exists....

It gives us essentially an agreed anchor point to come back to... If it’s agreed that my definition is off the mark of what the reality is, I’m happy for options to be floated in order to find our agreed anchor point for the discussion... Sure it could stand alone, and perhaps it should, but I also don’t believe it would be a lasting discussion albeit a passionate one, so I figured a short term diversion (that occurs regularly in most threads) to be a way of keeping things minimised so that it doesn’t end up like a parliamentary inquiry...

I am really enjoying this thread. A great show of ideas and discussion. Over the gender pay gap.. it would be easier to navigate as a committed couple being that resources are shared.. it seems the big losers at retirement are the singles with no resources. I would put myself in this category unless drastic action is taken soon. I have seen the writing on the wall and am taking steps as I am able. I have touched on the professional preferences with girlfriends over the years, always I hear oh I would never do that.. seems most of the women I have met in my life don't like to get their hands dirty and so miss the opportunity at well paying gigs. One at least started training to be a physiotherapist (after we split) but unfortunately couldn't juggle kids and the commute to a nearby city. (I like to see people I care about succeed, even the ex) If she had not chosen to be a single mother I am sure I could of assisted. 3 at once! Well there's a first. Anti - Country - DeepestP I pride myself on my dignity, capacity to learn from others and taking an approach to life that everyone deserves a fair go and that there should be equity (fairness) rather than equality (the same for all). I was raised by father that used his brawn to graft for his family. He was also a staunch unionist. My mother stayed at home and performed all the duties associated with rearing four children and maintaining the home. As a sole parent (since 2003) to a beautiful male and female I am acutely aware of the 'risk factors' that befall each of them (their genders) across their life spans. I am a unionist and, because I am a woman, a feminist. I am also a person that stands for what is right and fair for all. I would refer anyone that's interested to Australian Unions (Change the rules for working women). What is being asked for (although I would personally tweak a few things) is equitable, sustainable and works to close the huge gender gap. The gender gap calculation can be found on reputible sites and evem on wiki. I would not pretend for a minute I can do the calculation; an economists job. Statistics I have previously quoted come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Parliamentary inquiry into the economic security for women in retirement. Safe Work Australia provide data on notifiable fatalities in Australia. I think we should work harder to embrace and celebrate our differences. This tit-for-tat approach between the sexes doesn't help especially when done online with strangers. I could go on (and on and on) but I'm busy with work and life and contributing to this great country of ours. I'm out. GMPx

Didn't really help, it was always going to be very complicated statistical modelling. Like all mathematical models it is sensitive to the initial assumptions which need to be made to simplify the problem enough to model it. These assumptions are not known and cannot be proved/disproved easily (otherwise they wouldn't need to be made). Tweaking these assumptions can be used to produce the outcome one seeks. I did learn that there are two measures of gender pay gap; Adjusted and Unadjusted. Adjusted measures take into account differences in occupations, hours worked, etc. And that by the best measurements we have there exists an adjusted gender pay gap in this country and I'll defer to the expertise of those who work that out. We have laws to try prevent this and I agree with that and if need to look at the laws to improve it then I support that too. What I don't respect is shallow arguments that when challenged resort to pathetic sarcasm and nervous twattle trying to disguise the fact the argument just got turned on itself by 5 minutes of googling. You want to be taken seriously, get serious and admit when you're wrong. Do you think that men get handed a pay check for having a penis? Mine is magnificent and nobody has paid me for it yet. Hmmm ironic that given the explosion of sugar dating on this very site. If you want to fight for what is right I'll support that. If you want to fight for what you can get at my expense I'll fight you back. Throwing out increasing homelessness among women over 65 as the main issue when in reality ~60% of homeless people over 65 are men is positioning yourself as an adversary. Do you expect me or most men to roll over to that? I don't get underpaid and the reason is not my penis. Politics doesn't always have to be adversarial, how can we work together to make this system better? I've suggested reviewing the laws in place and how they're enforced. What else are people suggesting?

Men have predominantly the nastier, physically demanding and dangerous jobs, some of which are low pay (no school prerequisite). However, some also charge a fortune (plumber, electrician etc.). After about 22 years of schooling I might just get there? Was I looking for short-cuts? Doubtful. But guess what? Debate about gender gap is not just about money, it is about respect. Only when man’s pride hits the floor; when his butt is wiped by a nurse, that is when he wishes she is paid more. It means, not paying more to some dodgy aged-care facility but to HER, so she is not stressed all the time as she washes him, feeds him, takes him to the toilet, fits his catheter, cleans up the vomit/blood and sees him as a living, breathing individual...and gives him respect. Many nurses do that regardless. You may now say it’s her job but it is not really. How many men loose a limb and how many come to someone’s care? But of course, most young or middle aged healthy men never see that side of life. However, that is what awaits them all. Countries that distribute their incomes the most equally have the longest life expectancy and the highest quality of life. (Ms)

Indeed, it is hard to put a monetary value on “respect" or any emotions and/or personal experiences. We live in a practical world, with bills to pay, however, we expect “respect" “compassion”...etc. from others for free. I could bombard you with “ we should appreciate good education” (another mostly women occupation), “should reward and value any work equally“ or “should put the price on kindness”. But I shall not do that. Especially not the last one! The answer to your question is hidden in the last part of my first replay. Capitalism sees everything as a resource. Basic human values should be protected and valued highly exactly because they are not quantifiable. We are a rich country, some don’t even realise how rich we are. Civilised countries have laws and when there is a will, they are up and running. Central problem is not gender but class (extending into gender) division. We should learn how to demand things. We should know what our politicians or CEOs are doing ALL the time, when and what they are eating, sleeping, who are they talking with or visiting (not that I am particularly interested but just to annoy them); for that salary of theirs they have sold their ass to us and they need to know it... and we should tag them! Perhaps, we should also start with observation - of how it’s done in other countries. Huh That's a mouthful ! (Ms)

Ah Mado, I play alone all too often. Often it's me alone keeping several boats afloat as well! I do occasionally enjoy some company when I play. But.. I guess I am tough enough to handle it, I guess also I have little choice in the matter. Lol Smile and wave and get on with it.

As a visitor to your beautiful country, I'd say enjoy what you've got! It's a stunning place from what I've seen whether it's seeing 4 seasons in one day of Melbourne and surrounds or dripping with sweat in Port Douglas having a pint of prawns with a XXXX gold. I've just driven from Adelaide to Perth and again another completely different but stunning landscape. The one common denominator all Aussies I've met have been happy, friendly and helpful....you're lucky to call this place home so forget moaning about the weather and enjoy what's on your doorstep and beyond life's too short.....failing that....get laid ;)

Last night it finally rained here in Briz. Not a lot but at least some so the plants are dancing. I am feeling it for the people up North.FFF and SD in particular.Five days of torrential rain in a row and more predicted. You are right Scottish guy ,we are indeed lucky to live here but whinging about the weather is a time honoured tradition here .:)I am happy that you are having such a great time on your travels...we love a Scottish accent here too. Glasgow is one of my very favourite cities ,I found that it was full of Billy Connellys :) Hugs Q
