I hope I did the right thing...

October 19 2014

Recently I joined a dodgy sex and dating site (not for the first time) it soon became apparent that things were not as the site would have me believe (shock horror). The women there were all over me like a cheap suit...most were naked or semi naked photos which image searches showed to be from "other places" one for example was allegedly posted by the woman's son after she cheated on her hubby...One in particular was of a good looking woman who was dressed (fully) in some business type clothing an image search revealed she's not a Perth girl at all but from an Eastern states city, with a profile on Liked In. Her email address was available there so I sent her a heads up email with a link to "her" profile page and her "user name". I don't think it's right that these scammers have stolen her image and are using it, I guess, without her permission. She looks like a nice respectable woman, if she was a friend or relative of mine I would expect her to be pretty damned angry about it...I would welcome some feed back...positive or negative...as you will.

I'd want to know, for sure. Even it turned out to be me, I'd appreciate knowing I'm that easy to track down. I would have (and have) done the same as you.

Imagine finding a confronting email, albeit a heads up, first thing on a Monday morning at work. She has checked out my Linked In page...it's new and minimal...but hasn't acknowledged my email. That's fine I don't want thanks I believe she has a right to know her image is (probably) being misused.I've been on an even worse site which also was clearly misusing women's images...I had a bit of fun on that site playing cat n mouse with them. I clicked on a profile then lo & behold that profile would come online and check me out the same bad English followed me round from profile to profile. It's an insult to our intelligence sometimes that they think so little of us to think we'll fall for that crap.I'm giving one profile a wind up right now, her piccie shows up on at least 10 different sites! The proof of her being a "local" girl is to tell me she's from the greater Perth area...this in answer to me asking er which side of the river she's from...until I get bored with it

Have had similar experiences to what you've described - even here on good 'ol RHP. A few years back there was a proliferation of profiles from Russian / Ukrainian scammers - saying they were from somewhere local, but obviously didn't have a clue about what they were talking about. Their use of 'English' was a dead give-away, and many used the same format of wording in their profiles. Depending on what mood I was in at the time, I would also play games with them for a while until I let them know the jig was up, but later I just straight out reported the false profiles - there was just too many of them getting through. Haven't seen any for a while, though. Tall

a thread here called Catfish...it was about how people steal others identity in cyber space... there is a TV show about it too....it was amazing how many seemingl rational people got taken in...many handing over large sums of money.to someone they had never met, someone who told them that they loved them...Even after all the warnings about Nigerian scammers on line, people here and elsewhere still believe the bullshit...and it happens here, in Australia.Recently a friend of mine contacted a woman whose identity had been stolen by a scammer...the woman said that people used her photos all the time....but this time it was more serious than that... identity theft is a criminal offence, scammers are incredibly arrogant, they think that they are cleverer than their victims...but what they fail to realize is that there is always someone cleverer than them and eventually they will be caught.
