Quoting 'Kisskiss80' I think there is a specific section for random posts like this. - Posted from rhpmobile It's the off topic section, which happens to be where the OP posted this topic. I'm always puzzled why people feel the need to comment just to state that a topic is too long for them, too serious for them, that they're not interested in it, etc. Seems highly narcissistic to believe that anyone else cares that you think that.

When was the news media objective? Rupert Murdoch is the very antithesis of ethical and he controls the majority of the information we receive and the spin. History tells us that the reporting of events was usually written by someone on the winning side, and it was all about the spin. Shakespeare really did a number on Richard 111 for instance. He was currying favour with the Tudors. Alexander the Great wasn't quite so great. So Cat I don't really think there has ever been a time of objectivity, perhaps the ABC in this country comes close.but certainly not any media outlet with a commercial bent. Q

and the so called 'news" with its spin or agenda. And I think the OP is right that unfortunately there is lately a greater portion of the later. I am also inclined to agree with kisskiss, and therefore have no hesitation in reporting that I am one of the wisest, most charming, intelligent, best looking men on here and if you fail to message me , you are missing a once in a life time chance of experiencing a unbelievably good lover???

...is that it can be used as a guide to a common truth or mislead the masses to a wrongful conclusion. Sometimes the masses need only be one individual...and oft that is when it is at it's most dangerous. Good luck with advancing the hypothesis of a near-thesis length post. Best always.......... CM

Probably right Kisskiss, this is not the place for dark thoughts or troubles that exist in every day life so many people wish to escape from. Someone has said I do not rant and even though in real life I rarely do, I just had to vent my frustration this time. Of course you are right Quenta, it was always like that, but that fact can not be an excuse for those n power to lie, cheat and treat people like they are idiots without thinking there would be some consequences. Thanks CM but I am not advancing any hypothesis here. Actually, when I think of it, one could argue that sex could be an escapism, a vent if you like !(Ms)

Quoting 'cat_n_the_hatter' Actually, when I think of it, one could argue that sex could be an escapism, a vent if you like !(Ms) Let's see then...if you dressed up as Cat Woman and I donned my Silver Surfer outfit then we ended up rolling around on the floor, the bench tops and the back seat of my car without even mentioning the action on my surf board double hot body surfing? All I can say is damn well better be able to escape....Batman is gonna be pissed off big time and as we know, he can be a tough fellow! I like your theorems, Pythagorus...just don't put my neck in a hypotenuse? Best..... CM

Nailed it. Three words Woodward and Bernstein, who still hold the mantel for objective and investigative journalism Off topic. I personally love the off topic subjects, and encourage the OP and others to post more on any subject. I love reading all the responses on various topics and I'm open to it all. I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds off topic subjects interesting, stimulating and for some of us, learning experiences. If a post is too long, then don't read it, simples. The only person that will ever know or care if you did or didn't, is you.

...can't remember where i saw it..something i was watching on tv recently, but i remember the person interviewed saying that investigative journalism is dying out because many media outlets cannot afford to employ them anymore. Or rather, that the type of news that today's public prefers to ingest doesn't require the skills and expense of the investigative journalist. Sounds plausible.

We really need a verandah and a few bottles of red to do this justice, but I have luke warm coffee and a phone so I'll be brief. Journalism produces a consumerable product for a market, this market is showing very little discernment in what it consumes to the point where it avoids objectivity in order to bolster its wishful thinking or mindset. Think climate change, vaccination, politics, religion etc. Populist politicians dining on internet garbage so they can tell people what they want to here. Objectivity is proportional to discernment. It seems both are becoming scarcer to our detriment.

We all source our information (news etc) based on our own background skills knowing that the source of information is imperative. Being objective can be seen as subjective and vice verse depending how you look at any subject. Always questioning is basic human nature to stimulate us to advance in life. Do I believe or trust what is going on in current mainstream journalism no, lot of it is political and $$$$$ driven. Although in light of what's happened in the last few days thank goodness for media to relay messages to broader community about natural disasters and what's occurring. Well some of it that is !!! - Posted from rhpmobile

Disagree, I think too many people like being kept in the dark, they really don't want to know lest it cramp their lifestyle. Ignorance is bliss.

I truly appreciate what you are saying and thank you for your thought provoking articulate post. As I have said before, you are one of my favourite posters in the forum. Always thoughtful, kind, insightful and intelligent. On topic. Yes, I agree with the level of objective journalism there is. Although not totally convinced that we can have a purely objective reporting of an event, as most reports go thru so many editing and filters, that they no longer resemble the original report, it does seem like the onus is placed on us squarely to assess and research the 'truth'. That or we completely absconding on the news, well, mainstream news anyway. I think it is this frustration and mistrust of mainstream media that has given rise to the proliferation of smaller media outlets delivering news online almost instantaneously, the 'see it as it happens ' moments. The phenomena of 'real people' posting clips online from the war front or elsewhere seems to be quenching that thirst for unfiltered or unedited news and have seem to have more street credibility than some media outlets. All thanks to the internet where people can post online, independently, right after the event. But again,. The onus is still in us to not just accept these news as definitive description of events, except for weather and some disaster reports/updates like in Debbie. I do watch the news, mainly ABC and SBS. other commercial news channels and current affairs, I skip. I have journalist friends and discussion around dinner table re. manipulation and sensationalism is hilarious not sad as the reports are dumb down to fodder and fed to the masses. So yes, objective journalism bothers me too and encourage my kids to question the 'news' as it is delivered. They seem very savvy compared to my generation when I.was their age. Thanks for the points of discussion. Food for thought. Keep posting.

Thomas Jefferson said "The freedom of the press cannot be limited without being lost" Given the myriad of laws we now have to supposedly protect us, it is no wonder the press is loathe to be honest. Look at Bill Leahy, totally wrong what was done

Interesting read. Some funny too :) I myself often thought like you Quenta. "It's always been like that" "Nothing will ever change" "That's only people..." But I am kind of not happy with that any more. It just doesn't justify the lowering of standards when it comes to people's work. Any work. Why should we listen and accept it in silence? Thank you Lily . I also like your comments as I can see a gentle person behind, no matter how much you try to hide it. :) I do not see Internet as a substitute for quality news, as it is filled with disinformation. It's not investigative journalist that I see are the problem, but those who call themselves that and have no idea what real journalism is, nor do they care. I agree with Smiling too. State with their new laws are not doing us a favour when they discourage real journalism and make people weary of offending some corrupt politician and end up in trouble. Hey seriously...regardless of what the National Enquirer trash rag at the news stands said, I did not father a two-headed baby with a hot female alien from a distant galaxy. Not that I would eliminate the possibility if she happened to look like Hannah Davis but even I have my fundamental standards and want to get paid big bucks for the real story! Besides, intergalactic divorce and child support would be the consummate bitch let alone not appearing in Family Court so far, far away!

Find reliable news sources and ignore the rest.Me I feel overwhelmed ATM ,I think I have compassion fatigue. We live in an age of over information ...well the information that powerful news agencies and governments want us to know...The Guardian,Al Jerzeera..spelling?..Wiki ...may be able to provide more reliable sources than other news agencies. Are we sheep? Probably .Donald Trump seems to have very good sheep herding skills. He tapped into the collective angst of the American disenfranchised . Now in this country we see the rise and rise of Ms Hanson. Please explain. Q

Q History is a little bit of a toss in that way and if were told the complete truth, woah would the world be rebelling. It is about power and keeping the population blinded. It is great to see so much coming out now and I feel it won't be far from the rebelling of citizens that are sick of the control we are under. For me I have a bit of a saying "We live in a world of democratic dictatorship" meaning we get to elect and then basically get told this is how it is. And the media from the very beginning has been part of this

We are only human and compared to many parts of the world we lead a pretty sheltered life. Many people would freak out if they spoke to a local cop about what goes on in their neighbourhood let alone "the truth" about Manus island, Syria, Palestine/Israel, Aboriginal Australia. There is a lot of bad shit out there done in our name which keeps the oil flowing and the avalanche of sweat shop clothing into our stores so we can wear it twice and chuck it.In an ideal world, the anti immigration mob would take a tour of a war zone and a refugee camp, those who support cutting overseas aid should hold an African baby dying of malnutrition and on it goes. Unfortunately we're selfish little monkeys and our empathy and willingness to comprehend "the truth" is limited. We won't get that wisdom until we have exhausted all the alternatives. So ignorance rules, willingly.People talk about the wonderful things humans can do, and it's true, here and there, but we need more than the sporadic efforts of a few individuals/organisations, it's time for nations to act.Thats my truth.I'm not actually as miserable and negative as the above makes out because like everyone else I live in my own bubble of joy. But where I can make a difference within my means, I do. Avagoodweekend. It's a bit of a rant and doesn't really address objectivity, I was going to delete the lot but hey, bit of light reading for the weekend can't hurt. Go Tigers.

I've posted to a number of threads wrt journalism and objectivity. I don't have a great deal to add just at the moment (owing more to my current study workload than a lack of more to say on the subject). That said, I thought I'd share a quote from one of my current study textbooks: "In relation to the public perception of risk, members of the public often only have access to incomplete information and are subject to strong arguments from lobbying and other special interest groups. Therefore, the public understanding and perception of risk may not be sufficiently informed or entirely objective. Journalists and news reporters have a duty to present news stories in an objective manner, which may not be easy when the people receiving the information do not have a full understanding of the risks involved." Hopkin, P, (2010), Fundamentals of Risk Management: Understanding, evaluating and implementing effective risk management, 2nd Edition, Kogan Page, London. This same phenomenon is also evident in other aspects of life such as when serious matters pertaining to safety, impropriety or fraud are raised or escalated in business and public life... (think 'Whistleblowing'). It may come as no surprise to learn even those with a full and proper understanding of risk (or perhaps because of their full understanding of risk) often fail to take effective measures in the interests of justice. "If we sit by and become complacent and put our heads in the sand, we're complicit." Shelley Morrison If we sit by and become complacent and put our heads in the sand, we're complicit. Hi , This could change a detail or two. we had an Air plane go down in the Mount Erebus region, now how would that be covered by people say from TVNZ or our Papers and could it be reported truthfully and by who. because it covered Air NZ the Govt of NZ the United States and those working down there at the time , because it involved NZ our people were able to be on hand with in a short time , Now youll be saying what the hell would I know any way. I worked for the Govt department of the DSIR and was down there 9 months after, I knew the pilot from some years before as I was training as a PPL = Pilot , I was working down there for 5 1/2 months so knew the area and conditions ,1980 -81 summer over, so I did my home work did the map detail and timing and distance QNH- height above sea level and conditions all concerning where the plane was against where it should have been ,and the reasons it was not Then found out the reported detail and a lot of other wrong detail to see what took place. what I found was half of reported detail was wrong and the back tracking of other importaint detail as evidence was a cover up. I deal in facts and I found independent of the Mr Mahon the top Man and his Lawers came to the same detail of cover ups and underhand things that went on and was a litany of lies, Having been there and worked there I think I would have a lot more knowledge that some reporters who did not have that experance I have .... would they be able to give an honest account of what happened . just my thoughts. ...noeleena...

Quoting 'noeleena' ...would they be able to give an honest account of what happened . just my thoughts. ...noeleena... Properly supported by his/her employer, a diligent reporter will have investigated all manner of detail from the broadest possible array of information sources to compile a factual report of the incident. Unfortunately, and for a variety of reasons, the ability to conduct quality investigative journalism is hampered. Owing to the time, effort, expense (and other commercial, legal and political interests), proper coverage of complex/multifaceted stories is nowadays published later in books. These usually contain lists of reference notes and bibliography for further reading/verification. Sadly, the tendency of many news services now is to dumb stories down to little more than headlines and soundbites that fit neatly between celebrity gossip and the promotion of music and movie releases...

I sounds as though you may be in position to write such an account if one does not already exist. Alternatively of course, you know there are many who for some of the reasons cited above have sought to write fictionalised accounts... Personally I think that treatment is most usually deeply flawed - not least because at the behest of someone somewhere along the line (similarly to popular/mainstream commercial news services) they use devices such as overblown/overstated romance and action scenes to gloss over facts, or to distract and sidetrack focus from the most significant matters that might be exposed. I prefer to see and read the courage of genuine stories told genuinely.
