I was thinking a lot after the forum theme "How long does it take you to get ready for a Date"

October 01 2014

It blew my head how much people....”women” can spend. I really can’t I went once for 12 month without buying anything for myself. I have to go to the hairdresser every 6 weeks, bummer my hair grows like weed, and for women it cost a fortune to have a cut and a bit of colouring. The other expense is my feet and my facial hair....for more; I just don’t have the means, because it is more important to pay my mortgage and what is involved in it. Tell me how you do it....I just can’t spend more. Good food, electricity, water, gas, insurance, mortgage just takes nearly all my wages. So how do people do it??? To spend on shoes and clothes and makeup and beauty, I just can’t. Is there a secret which I have not mastered yet? So when I read what some women do to get ready, and how men react to it, I get envious and also think why such high spending on a women’s part? Yes I look after myself, I am clean, but by no means can I spend this much. Cheers L

Being self-employed, its feast or famine with me.......When business is good, its a feast. When not so good, famine!Priority for me is business costs, employees wages and expenses, my mortgage and all that goes with running a house.....Keeping yourself looking and smelling good can be expensive, but there are ways to minimise the cost of pedis, facials etc.....Bargain hunting is a good sport to play!!!!My biggest life lesson was when I had $500 a month to live on (ex mortgage)....that included all bills plus at the time my big dog had a very bad skin problem, weekly injections alone cost $40...but I did it........amazing how you can when you need to.....But - I enjoy a bottle of vodka each month....

at the end of the day. You're a single mother with a mortgage so I think you're doing fantastically well. And it's all about different priorities also I think. I have found that having my own quirky style and being manicured in every which way but loose has helped bring my sexy back after kids and career. Myself, I usually spend around $500 a month on nails, pedicures, hair and hair maintenance, waxing etc. I would not spend that much and do most of those treatments at home if I couldn't afford it though. - Posted from rhpmobile

Being variously a full time student or in only casual employment for the last few years, I've had to find lots of ways to become more thrifty with things like beauty and clothes (I don't have a credit card either). One good thing about that is that it has forced me to see how much money I used to waste on things that I never should have bought in the first place. I do my own nails and toenails, and all my own hair removal (used to get the downstairs waxing done at a salon but the last few times I did it myself at home). I'm lucky enough with my hair that it only needs cutting a couple times a year and if I colour it's usually a home job, although occasionally I might splurge at a salon (the place I go to now is a bit cheaper than most). I also don't do facials, they might be good for relaxation but apart from that I think they are a waste of money. In regards to moisturisers and all those other things we women like to use, there is absolutely no reason to pay a lot of money for any of them. You'll find that with most of the expensive ones you're mostly paying for the brand, and that you can find something just as if not more effective for much less. It helps a lot if you do a bit of research into some of the basic science behind the product ingredients and which products are really the essentials, and how cosmetic companies manipulate us into buying unnecessary products - eye creams being one prime example. It's pretty much the same with makeup, these days there are a lot of cheaper alternatives that are of very decent quality. I also buy a lot of things online these days, including on ebay. I find that they are often cheaper compared to the inflated store prices here in Australia, even when shipping from overseas is included. My main splurge these days is Black Milk, which to me is worth it as the clothes are good quality and unique. I do need to exercise a lot of restraint to limit what I buy and really need to think about whether I will wear a particular piece.

Husband , but then I worked hard for a long time so I do not feel to guilty. But even then sometimes the bills just come flooding in at times, and that little extra is a lot extra for women. Hair , either looking after it or getting it off in places. cost for my hair is 140 every six weeks. Wax everysix weeks is around 80. Facials can be around that as well. I would kill for a good massage but that is a luxury. I buy my clothes second hand, you can by cheap from stores but they tend not to last as long. My friend is a bloody major bargain hunter. I have been to the extremes at times with money, from street sleeping to million ,to lost that and almost back to sleeping on streets. To being on the sole parent benefit and trying to pay my mortgage. out of work and shit out of luck at times. I think a lot of people do it bloody hard now ,the working poor. Especially when it comes to medical and dental. my GP its 75 up front short visit and not much back on medicare. Xrays the last lot the gap for one of them was 400 dollars, just the bloody gap. Glasses also cost and private medical is now around 100 a week for top cover. I saw a woman just walk out as she said, I cant afford to pay that much, so she never had her xray I like to spend money on travel , so that's where my big bucks go

I went from a comfortable lifestyle and not having to worry about money to living from month to month as a single parent. It means making drastic changes. I was never a beauty salon person before, but now I cant even afford to get my hair done every month, so sometimes I colour it myself. I get clothes form wherever is cheapest, or in the sales, and it does irk me sometimes when people on here diss Target and Kmart, maybe one day they will have no choice but to shop there. As long as my rent and bills are paid, and we have food on the table, thats my main priority. I do treat myself to nice lingerie now and again, but its from an online store and each outfit costs me around twenty bucks. Im lucky in that my friends buy me nice perfume and cosmetics when it comes to birthdays and Christmas. The strange thing is, Im so much happier now that I have to worry about budgeting my money. I appreciate things more. Plus the best things in life are free....Im just thankful for what I have.

I'm a fulltime single parent of three school aged kids. I have to watch the budget. It helps that I have my mortgage paid off, own my own home and have never had a credit card. I shop for only the necessities and with shoes/clothing, for comfort. @koko - I buy clothes for me and my kids from Kmart and Target. I've found the quality to be just as good, if not better than some of the bigger brands. Especially when my kids go through a pair a shoes every school term, I can afford to throw them out and get new ones. I don't splurge on brand names and don't follow the trend. I have taught my kids the same, although I have no idea why my oldest won't let me cut his hair any more using an upside down icecream container as a guide :P I've never been to a beauty parlour. I cut/trim/style my own hair. I do my own nails. I also do my own hair removal. I have a very basic beauty routine and don't use a lot of makeup. I use Sorbelene for my skin and olive oil to tame any frizz in my hair. Cold pressed olive oil is also good for the face, as a moisturiser. I do occasionally treat myself to lovely pieces of lingerie or shoes, which I also buy them online because they're cheaper :) I buy necessities in bulk when they're on special, eg. Toilet paper, washing liquid, etc. I don't buy the latest electronic gadgets/toys for my kids because "all" their friends have it. I am not scant when it comes to food though. I will buy fresh and if it tastes good, I will get it at any cost. And I do love seafood :) I keep on top of my bills and budget the family's spending/expenditure each month and whatever is left goes towards our savings for something special, eg. A family holiday :) I don't believe you have to spend a lot to make yourself beautiful if you already are ;) - Posted from rhpmobile

however it's how you use it and depend what you do with it...use it wisely as mum used to say. I grew up with my sister and brothers hand me downs..we were, what some would call very very poor even tho mum worked nights, she struggled. I have never had a credit card nor been in debt. I have always had the mind set, if you don't have the bucks you go without. I've never use laybuy nor used hire purchased white goods. I manage to save and budget for my holidays and trips. When it comes it my beauty of course I put an effort in...I work along side many professionals so I want to feel and look professional. Every 4 weeks I have to get my hair thinned out or else it looks moppy, thick and out of control. It's a European thing. I've had to shop around, seek others for a reasonable hairdressers (which I been going to for years and the price has stayed the same) $22 for a thin out and about $35 for wash, treatment, style, straighten and trim. As for make up products - I use "nude" always buy it at the chemist when it's on sale or when needed. For years I went without... I've work really hard for where I am and earn a reasonable wage, now I can spend on me. It's just me..so I can afford too, so why not. Not bragging just putting it out there, from working hard to going from rags to riches. It does pay of cause I never want to walk my mothers struggling shoes. Foxy

I love op shops- I've found a few really good ones.. I buy all my jewellery, jackets and handbags at op shops.. Also I've found one that has amazing corsets and dance costumes all at around $5 each... I change bits of clothes slightly and alter seams- I don't like the throwaway culture of cheap clothing. The clothes I find in op shops are beautiful material and often worn only a couple of times... It saves me a fortune and I always feel so satisfied with my haul :)) Xxviolet

I too love OP and retro clothes op shopping as well. The best place I've found is Bronte in Sydney. Actually the other week I took some brand name clothes down to local Op store and handed over to ones of the ladies. She told me I would make a killing if I sold them on ebay. I know I said, but the whole idea is for me to bring them here to your store. Foxy

Buying clothes from the States and China is soooo much cheaper! Buying clothes, linen, etc between seasons also helps. I recently topped up on nice winter linen, sheets dropped from $75 to $25 a set in all sizes including king sets 😳. Ummmm my hair is something I can't go cheap on but I do love TAFE Salons, $40 for a whole head of colour, cut and treatment, same for waxing, mani-pedi's and facials if the campus has a beauty day spa as well. Op shopping (yes I said it!) can turn up some nice gems too. (Shrugs) The only other thing is find something you love in a store and wait a few weeks until it comes on sale at a reasonable price. I have 8 of the exact same dress in different colours that dropped to $5ea, over a weeks worth of business wear for $40 that can be dressed up or down. There was a time when I wouldn't buy anything but labels/brand names, can't afford that now so practicality kicked in. I think I look alright in my wardrobe. Who wants to look like a million $.....all green and wrinkly?

Go for the sales, pack your own lunch etc etc. i don't do the whole salon thing - though it's always been a Mecca of femininity and grace and friendly banter - too much TV? Lol. I colour my own hair, get sales and try desperately to keep head above water. Lunches out and drinks at the pub are social mine fields and coffee comes in my travel mug lol I have always dreamed to have my nails done every week as I adore beautiful hands..... Just a manicure nothing swish, just pretty hands ;) - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'Cinnamonnsilk' if a guy doesn't like me au natural then what is the point? - Posted from rhpmobile Love smooth female skin (which you can generally do yourself) but no make-up or as little as possible is great. That way you know what you wake up to is close to what you went to bed with Just kidding, nothing wrong with natural though with just enough to make you (woman that is), feel sexy, without going over the top. Me, I have a quick shower & shave, dress and out the door (only so much you can do with a bad canvas :) - (note to ladies. You do not need to be perfect, good personality & character covers up a few floors in appearance, and I prefer no make-up with a few floors than overdone)

I may well get in trouble here but a bit of inside info based on my personal opinion (blame it on the 2x gins). BUT. When I was in a relationship recently and getting ready to go out, after 1-2 hrs of her getting ready I am asked what I think, I say you look lovely, she hesitates, another hour later (change shoes, dress, hair), asks me again, I say you look lovely (just as lovely as before only different). I mean WTF, who are you dressing up for when you are told you look lovely and you spend all the extra time changing to still look lovely but different. As I said before. You do not need to go overboard. Your general features (face shape, hair colour, figure, smile, height) can be determined from over 10- 20 metres away, giving an initial attraction (too far away to notice too any make-up), then (if you are lucky enough to meet) it is mostly personality

you can get some good bargains from holidays to beauty treatments online on deal sites. Check out allthedeals online as they show all the deals from many of the deal sites and they are categorised so you can find what you want. Like Koko, I don't spend a fortune on a beauty regime, I probably look my age but I don't think I look old for my age. I get my hair coloured and foils every 3 months approximately, sometimes longer. Other than that, I don't pamper myself but I have started taking holidays. I find I am richer now than when my ex was pissing our money up the wall and whatever else he got up to. I did give up smoking too which gave me a lot more play money as I was a pretty bad smoker. I used to get waxed but the ingrown hair was a nightmare so I just shave. My skin is being problematic so I am having to use some more organic soaps and the coconut oil also as a moisturiser.

I use coconut oil for cleansing and moisturising, I buy products (make up, skin care, shampoo, etc) from iHerb in the US, flat $8 shipping to Oz and way cheaper than Australia's inflated prices for everything. Clothing I buy classic pieces that can be mixed and matched and don't go out of style. Lingerie I buy online. Hair cuts every six weeks but I don't go to the most expensive salon. Colouring, hair removal, mani/pedi I do myself. I work as a scrub nurse so I can't have fake nails or polish anyway which cuts down the cost. I'm a single parent to three school age kids so I simply cannot justify spending $100s on myself. Luckily I'm just naturally sexy ;-)

I don't travel overseas. I don't have a partner wasting hundreds of dollars a month on alcohol so that helps! Stupid alcoholic. I'm a bit of a tight arse so to speak, but I'm happy. I don't spend money on expensive beauty products, just the simple basic brands. I do splurge on sexy lingerie and heels, but even then I buy them on sale. :)

Thank you. This made my morning. Its good to hear you. And yes life got sooooooo expensive...no matter what you do. I need new glasses and not to have bottle glass on my nose I pay to get a nice pair with thin bifocal lenses, which I have to wear for 2 years. I have to pay 900 out of my own pocket. Medicare doesn't pay for bifocals and my ancillary from HBF doesn't pay much more. People are now going to Bali what I heard to get the teeth done or new glasses. I have never bought clothes through Ebay because I am not very tall and I am round so I really have to try clothes on and see what it looks like and whether it fits. But thank you for all this, you never stop learning, and also good to hear so many are in the same boat as I. For me it is important to live in my own home, I love my little house, and I will sacrifice on myself should the interest rates go up again.... Thank you , thank you for your messages it was great to read them, now I feel not so bad anymore.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.... ~Sam Levenson For natural, free beauty, relax in the sunshine, swim in the ocean, run fast & free on the grass, laugh often. Swap clothes & accessories with a bff, create yr own style with op shop bargains, string cheap beads together. I have never brought expensive clothes, jewelly or accessories. I've never paid for a facial, pedicure, waxing, massage fitness trainer, beauty stylist, etc. But I still take pride in my appearance, & like to look pretty for meets. I too, am sometimes envious of my female friends who flaunt their wealth, who always wear designer labels, & spend much time at beauty parlours. Have a serious look at how much insurance you are paying. Cover your house and your car if you are paying it off. The rest is bullshit. Insurance is a scam, it's legalised protection money. Income insurance, travel, pet, phone, bad hair day insurance, it's all bullshit. I know women particularly like the "security" of insurance but seriously, what's wrong with being responsible for your own actions ? Take a look at how much you pay out each year for "what if". It might surprise you when you add it all up, keep a "what if" savings account instead.

Your right about some of the insurances......Last year my former insurance company wouldn't come to my "bathroom" party...cost me over $5000 to fix, so shopped around and found another cheaper company who doesn't cover everything - so now the $90 a month I save goes into the "what if" fund....But - I found travel insurance is a must.....Last year while in Canada my $470 bills were completely re-imbursed for the cost of an $180 insurance policy........Simples!

I'd had my car insurance with one particular company for years, no at fault claims, the highest rating etc. Last renewal they decided to suddenly up my premium by a couple hundred dollars, when I called to query why they couldn't give me any specific reason, just that 'sometimes premiums go up'. I cancelled my policy with them and took one out with one of the online based companies, which can offer much lower premiums due to their lower overheads. I know that the online based services don't suit everyone, e.g. a lot of elderly people, but for internet users they can be a very good cheaper alternative (I have my bank accounts and super with an online bank, hardly any fees). Although I have issues with it I do maintain a level of health insurance. I've had the experience of having a very painful, but not considered emergency condition that would have taken months, perhaps years to be seen to in the public system. Having private insurance allowed me to have it fixed within days of seeing the specialist. Personal responsibility is all well and good but shit can still happen at any time no matter what precautions we take.

I love hearing people talk about how much time they spend, trying to save a couple dollars here and there because they have to. Like driving for 20km to get a one cent saving on fuel in their 4wd they trade in every couple years. Or the people who "refuse" to get finance, and then sit back and bitch about the price of rent whilst all their mates homes are doubling in price. Or are proud that they "save up cash for everything" only to not have the ability to buy online at half the price, because they won't get themselves a credit card. What do those people do if their pet, child, car, whatever, needs work/medical NOW? "Oh, I gotta save up for it, life is hard, I cant ever get a break".... Fact is, most people just spend exactly what they earn each week. Regardless of income. Most business owners do just enough to make ends meet. Most people spending five hours trying to save $3 have never considered using that time to find a better paying job.
