I'm going to grab a pair of knickers.

September 10 2009

Why do they call it a pair of trousers/pants? or a pair of knickers for that matter...   I mean there's only one item of clothing it's referring to, unless that pair of pants has an invisible buddy?   Or is it in reference to the two holes one puts ones limbs through. But by that logic, wouldn't a tshirt be a pair of tshirt...likewise a bra?

Maybe it's just mis-spelled these days and used to be a pear of undies.... Or maybe we have it wrong and have shortened the quaint traditional phrase "a spare pair of panties" in reference to the high cost of clothes back at a time when a person couldn't have more than a couple of pants.... and now we just say.... " my pair of ".... Even though we have a cupboard full of them..... Whatever is the case .... seeing a pair of undies on the floor next to a soiled sweaty cum stained mattress always tells a better story than seeing "one undy" there. Pass my undy please. :(. Hugs gaz

Before the days of modern tailoring, such garments, whether underwear or outerwear, were indeed made in two parts, one for each leg. The pieces were put on each leg separately and then wrapped and tied or belted at the waist (just like cowboys’ chaps). The plural usage persisted out of habit even after the garments had become physically one piece. However, a shirt was a single piece of cloth, so it was always singular.     Interestingly you never hear of a pair of pants suit...but since these are more modern i guess the singular form applies. Tailors will refer to a Trouser and Jacket so singularity still does apply...

Thanks for clearing that up Love Curvie !   Casava.....so the next time a guy says to you he wants to tear your knickers off, you wi be ablle to engage in some interesting trivial banter about the pair of knickers that is just about to be torn to shreads.....hell it might be a good way of externding foreplay ?   Mmmm...a pair of puppy holders ??

Meah.. I'm not satisfied by Love Curlie's practical answer. I mean.. when were these undies purported to be spit in two and how was that achieved?   The old cave man had a loin cloth quite clearly without a split.. and a pair of speedos underneath.. I mean I've seen it in the movies... even Tutenkharmen had loincloth underwear.. (I should get "a pair" of those for myself).....   And havent you ever seen any Robin Hood movies? I mean underneath all that chainmale armour dudes back in medieval times had a pair of long johns with a flap in the front... (I should get myself "a pair" of those too.. what a great idea!) ... and those medieval dudes used to stuff their undies with socks!     And long johns were still used in teh early 20th century.. so I'm struggling to find any support for your "two piece" one for each leg... pair of undies. Can you draw a picture or something>? I mean, if I ever get to parade my undies through the ages collection.. I wouldn't want to miss the one essential "pair"!     HUgs Gazza
