yesterday....because the Muslims and the Christians were fighting over Jerusalem from the 11th to the twelfth century the Jewish people became caught in the middle...they fled to Europe....they were viewed with suspicion because they were not Christian ...one hundred years later when the plague or Black Death arrived in Europe, the Jews were blamed...they were accused of poisoning the wells...of course it was days that spread the plague, and the fleas that liver on them..We fear what we don't understand OP...and we fear death..two schools in the USA closed this week because of the fear of Ebola....Are Australians becoming more racist...Personally I think we are getting better but the reason I loathe Australia day is because of all the flag waving, chest thumping Southern Cross tattooing jingoistic crap..Oh and because it's actually a celebration of Invasion day...xxQ

We have a very real chance of not being a dreadful, racist nation if we have more people who, like you, have the courage to act when racism rears its ugly head. What a great thing you did. And what divine kindness you showed that young man. Thank you x I think there's a lot of racism in Australia. Most of it seems to come from ignorance, laziness and buying into everything the media spruiks. I think there's a real risk it will get much, much worse given current world events and the nature of people to take sides, jump to conclusions and jump on any viewpoint that makes them feel powerful and self-righteous. And I think it's a downward spiral heading towards a tipping point we might not be able to return from. Stopping racism is up to everyone. Much as most of us in here probably wouldn't stand by and do nothing if we saw blatant, ugly homophobia in action, we need to have the courage and conviction not to allow subtle and obvious acts of racism pass us by. The Humans of New York blog and FB page is an incredible source of global tolerance-building. One of the best antidotes to racism I've come across. I rate myself as someone who acts when I see an injustice. I intervene, I talk, I try I understand etc. But I'm not sure I'd have had the confidence to do what you did Litonya. You've inspired me to dig a little deeper :) - Posted from rhpmobile

it wasn't me My son sent it to me and I thought it is such a great writing. And it made me think.....how easy it would be to change some once perception of how they thought it is. The media has so much to answer. Maybe because I am a German this whole thing is close to my heart and sounds like history could repeat itself.....I would never ever like to have anything like this happen to the Australian People, and hatred is spread so easy ..........we Germans still have to deal with the NAZI time, it hangs on us like a bad smell. And it all started through propaganda......

The facts, racism is alive and well. I hate to say this but it is the truth. Racism and hatred has been passed down through time. It is nothing new but something old that self perpetuates. I deal with it daily and having grown up in the states recognise many forms. My great grandfather was born a slave in 1875. He died in 1977 when he was 102. There were many stories passed down.

will we ever get this shit out of our system? I know it has to start with each of us to change. And what you say is right....................the words, the deeds, the hate messages are all the same and repeated again and again. I would love the schools would show the movie AMERICAN HISTORY X this movie captured in my eyes the whole stupid racist notion we carry around.

I had to think about this, as firstly if you did that here the young guy would punch your lights out. I do have problem with full burka, but that is mainly in public toilets. I guess that's from working with pedophiles, I do like to know there are women under that. I think bank tellers might get a tad nervous as well. Its the practicality that caused France to ban it rather than the racist thing. Australia is a very tolerant nation, after all we are a patchwork of people. I have been on the end of racist remarks, try working at Centrelink and you will know what I mean. Including spat on. I do not watch the news anymore. There is a whole bunch of people now who turn of the news. I figure if Isis comes to my door I am fucked well and truly anyway, being a woman, and white and not a Muslim. I do not know how many of you have lived overseas and in countries like that but I have. I guess that is why people flee to Australia, don't have a problem with that but please ,be mindful of the guys already living here. I am fearful of loss of my rights as a woman and to keep secular and profane separate in our law. I think it is human nature to be afraid of loss of any kind, and fearful of change that may impact. All racism is born by the mother of fear and ignorance. But its also born from experiences, if you have been in a war zone or experienced racism yourself you have that lash back affect. when you move to a country you also cant often let go of your belief system, and you can see now in Australia there are some who want to destroy the very things that they came her for. I think also that the people who have been doing this of late, have been a neighbor a friend and someone that people were shocked to hear are not what they seem. so that guy picked a symbol, and that poor woman was under it, the real woman was hidden and now damaged and may now fear just as that guy did. Its a viscous circle. But your right the fear is spreading that's what news does, it frightens the shit out of us . Never take your way of life for granted. We all need to look into our community and treat people with respect no matter how afraid we are, as that is the best cure for racism.

I have travelled widely and there wouldn't be a nation on earthy that doesn't have elements of racism. Not one. Ignorant and angry people are unfortunately, globally distributed.

Once you have lived outside of Australia you realise how not multicultural you are. In Montreal you can have 16 families of difference race, creed, sexual orientation all living in harmony in a street while we segregate into communities... The racist overtones in Australia are shouted down by the masses but they wait there bubbling just under the surface and then when something happens it boils over into the streets... But as Mischeviouslad said, its everywhere.

This world is beautiful because of all the color in it.... I am a brown indian guy and i have had my fair share of racial taunts in my life....i shrug it off because i know how ignorant people can be and really the truth is as everyone knows it all comes from fear.... watching this thing on the news tonight about a lady who was covering her face....muslim style....its all good....let her be she is not hurting anyone just expressing her culture..... And really how lovely is watching different colors of people fuck? thats sexy as hell :)

Quoting 'inthekiss'I do have problem with full burka, but that is mainly in public toilets. I guess that's from working with pedophiles, I do like to know there are women under that. I think bank tellers might get a tad nervous as well. Its the practicality that caused France to ban it rather than the racist thing. female pedophiles? If a person is touching up some kid in a public toilet - I'm putting it in the same class of 'wrong' be they male or female, or covered in burqa, niqab or regular clothes. Besides at trough style urinals , I don't see the need to segregate the toilets anyway, unisex would make more sense and be more efficient. If you can wear a burqa into a place, then you should be able to wear a motorbike helmet or balaclava there as well and claim it as a requirement of your own personal choice then I'm fine with that - I find it an awkward double standard to allow one but not the other under religious grounds. Why should the practices of a large religion be recognised but not a smaller one (or no 'religion' at all, should the personal choice of an atheist be considered less important than someone choosing to follow catholic or muslim rules?)

Is Australia on the way to become Racist Country??? Catch title not sure intentionally or not to generate interest in the topic. I don't think anybody here has presented enough data to answer this. I don't have enough reasons to say yes. To be blunt one example given here is grossly insufficient to make any conclusion. Racism is like any other imperfection in society world wide. Yes some countries are more racist but who defines and measure any set point?
