Mix Tapes

December 22 2009

Anybody else miss them?   I guess it's fair to say that my music-nerd game is next level....but i genuinely miss putting together mix tapes for myself, friends, family, love interests etc.   i've been asked to compile tunes for a latin themed NYE party....but it just doesn't have the same intimacy when u rip cds/download tracks off the net and then just transfer it over to an i-pod.   i guess this is prob less of a concern for the "i just listen to my i-pod on shuffle" generation. but whatevs. i miss this stuff.   /end salty music nerd rant.   : (

You could still create mix tapes using s/w like Ableton or using a mixer and 2 turntables/CDJs.

Dude... you're 26! Aren't you supposed to be championing the iPod on behalf of all the Gen Y RHPers out there? lol Or are you retro man? ;)

I gotta say, I agree. I still have boxes of old tapes with stuff I put together (or people put together for me). It's too easy to just fill the car stacker with a bunch of CD's... and they are easy to carry around than tapes too.As for ipods etc... I have one for work so we dont have to be drained by the shit they play on the radio these days. Mixture of rock/metal and some comedy skits to break up the day. Problem is, one of the 20 minute comedy tracks comes on, and we'll all be standing around the stereo pissing ourselves laughing, and at the end of the day I'm wondering why my staff havent completed their tasks for the day... ahh well, better than having the guys all miserable  But, downloading is shit. Id much prefer the artwork, lyrics, pictures, and to be able to hold onto something real while we play the CD's for the first time.

I used to do some DJing back in the day. I still have about a couple thousands of vinyl records at home, although I still like the touch and feel of vinyl, there is nothing wrong with downloading mp3s which I do nowadays.

I had a box full of them too!   Think I must be the only person that doesn't have an mp3 player or iPOD thingy....like rockercouple80 much prefer having the artwork/lyrics of the CD or record to read when listening to the music!

Mixed tapes haven't gone away. Just convert the media to CDs. It's easy enough to create one's own mix CDs. And with a program like Audacity, you can even edit the songs on the CD to hold effects - fade in, fade out, wah effects, etc. So, no, we don't miss them. They've just been re-incarnated :).

yeah there is a hell of a lot wrong with downloading mate...Image you went to work (compare this to recording an album), only to find out at the end of the month your boss has decided not to pay you for everything (cause your fans download shit and dont buy it), but still takes the gains from all your hard work (they still hear the music)? Thats what happens to musicians when you download stuff.I work in the music industry, and downloading has had a MASSIVE effect on a lot of bands. One of my mates just told me last week their album sales have halved since 2003 yet they're making the best albums they ever have. All the guys in the band have had to go out and get 'day jobs'. This band isnt as "local" or a small time as you might think either... and it isnt an isolated incident either. You many not think you are doing harm, but you are. The days when you'd buy an album to hear new music are sadly gone.

Yeh, I totally miss them.  Yes you can put a compilation onto a cd, but it's the taping from one cassette to the other on the double cassette recorder lol, that I miss.  And then making the tape cover, writing out the track listing etc.  I'm about to load some music onto a memory stick and mail it over to a friend in WA ... thought will definitely go into it, but the space you have to fill !!  With tapes, you had like, 30 or 45 minutes each side, and your song choices were of the highest importance to reach the maximum impression of your style/s on the listener.  It was like extracting all your coolness onto one tape.   The song Tapes by Koolism really sums it all up.  You can download it and have a listen :-D

there is a nice aesthetic to a mixtape - but I'd rather playlists because I can carry a hundred different playlists versus very few tapes. (though I mostly listen to podcasts rather than my music)Like others, I like having the cover art, lyric sheets, photos and physical goods of a CD from a band/artist that I really like. (Unless they've loaded disks with stuff to prevent you ripping it, as I strongly disagree with music producers trying to control how and with what I listen to music.)I probably shouldn't get on a soapbox about IP, copyrights, licensing, DMCA, DMCA-related erosion of aussie rights via FTA, etc.rockercouple80: how do you feel about the argument of downloads being like a taster, and a potential driver for further sales (or where no sale would've ever happened - e.g. i wouldn't have bought that Britney Spears single)? What about bands 'selling direct' (e.g. Aimee Mann) so they do more legwork, but keep more control and a bigger piece of the pie? lastly, have you found many bands having to wrestle with the 'per song' payment model versus buying an entire album - I imagine with some performers this would be interesting when some albums are awesome singles with filler but they make a bigger sale, versus single songs where you may make more sales, but each sale is smaller? (do you think the performers losing out to downloading is more predominate in certain genres than others? from what I'd read pop music seems to do better in a world where P2P and illegal downloading is common, are bands or rock bands in particular more likely to get hit badly)(oops, sorry, I went longer than i meant to)

From the bands I work with, the smart ones are setting up to accomodate people who choose to purchase the songs or albums as downloads. But, that method of sale is only a tiny fraction. They do make more money per 'album', but you cant beat worldwide, in store, bricks and mortar distribution. Personally, I dont like the audio quality of the downloaded songs. Ive downloaded 'tasters' before, sure, but if I like what I heard after a couple songs, I buy the album. Having said that, I dont think Ive downloaded a song in three or four years. But Ive got a good 600-700 CD's right here, and another 100 or so scattered between various cars or at work. The best thing Ive found, is using the "these bands are similar" feature on Amazon. Ive discovered some very cool stuff buying albums from bands Id never heard of, simply because someone else had a similar 'shopping list'.There used to be a site called Pandora, which would ask you to select five of your favourite songs. From that, it would make suggestions, and stream them. You'd give each song a thumbs up, thumbs down, or a maybe, and from that feedback, it would suggest a few more songs. Great idea, but unfortunately they couldnt get the royalties sorted out for worldwide access, so it's USA only now :(

I remember listening to the top 20 on the radio with my finger hovering above the record button to try to catch the song that I wanted.  The DJ always talked over the beginning or the end though, dammit!  Must have traumatised me cause I remember keeping on missing It Ain't Over Til It's Over by Lenny Kravitz and I listened for days and when I finally got it there was heaps of talking.  I still have that tape too....aww the memories....   I have quite a few mixed cd's in the car though that I've made up a few years ago.  I have noticed in the past year or 2 that when you buy a tune online you can only burn it to disc a couple of times which sucks a little bit.  I love working out what will go together so the disc flows smoothly.   I'm not up with the times with MP3s and Ipods either and wouldn't have a clue how they work!
