I currently have one, a small rose, but am booked in to get a second one done just after the new year. These are memory tatts, for those that I have loved and lost..... This is why they are also not on display.

Realistic portrait on my upper left sleeve. Its a person who inspired me in life, and thats all we need to say about it :)Full sleeve on my right arm... from wrist to shoulder not a single mm of bare skin remains. Its a scene which starts with koi in water, one breaking out, and blending into a japanese style dragon on the upper arm. The water 'blends' into fire. That covers all the lower arm, and the outer upper arm, with a tiger covering the inner upper arm. Took about 30 hours under the needle. Meaning? Absolutely nothing, I just liked the idea and trusted the artists ability to pull it off. I dont really get the whole "every tattoo must have some deep and meaningful reason for being there"Left lower arm will eventually be coloured in too. No idea what, but certainly not tribal, or southern crosses..

Sounds like a great bit of ink!Would love to get at least one sleeve done, however time and other issues have stopped that....for now!Like Rocker couple, have a few that adorn the uppr arms and accross the shoulderblades, all in black and grey,Now looking at going colour.I have found it's not so much a particular design, as opposed to a particular artist.Go get it Bad Dog!

The tat was born in hard and bad times , a matchstick with a needle wraped tight with cotton was used, dip it into the ink and jab, people comment on it a lot it seems so out of place on me a selfmade man always been told ''you can have that remove these days'' no, some things serve to remind us how things once were.

I just have one near my shoulder blade, I've been meaning to get it tidied up - thicker, crisper lines. It isn't a particularly cool or fancy design, but it is the number I've always had for sport in domestic and international competition since I started (about 18 years now) so it means something to me (and i felt like getting a tattoo and that was the one thing i could think of that wouldn't change). Everyone who knows me well knows what it is - everyone else thinks i went in a triathlon or something and forgot to wash it off :-p

hey Sydneyboy.... how come I didn't get to see it ;) BadDog.... funny... I was talking to a very very sexy girl the other night about tattoos and how sexy (or not) they are.... we both girls have tattoo free skin... but there is something very sexy about a good one... As you say, I agree with them if they mean something significant to the owner... otherwise no....

...think alike sophie....lol....I was thinking about you recently on a completely different subject.....I hope we find time to chat someday.... People get them for all kinds of reasons....because they look good, or a lost loved one, a millon reasons.....I'm not being judgemental with this post as I am genuinely interested to know because I imagine the art of tattoo dates back thousands of years and may or may not have significance. Certainly it appears to have had much cultural significance. I dont care about the reasons so much as the significance....which is why I posted... Rockercouple.....fair point but when you think about it...the image simply looking good is also a meaning...is it not ? I would love a sleeve but I'm in my 40's now and I think it might be a bti 'try hard' looking.... I'm pleased with the responses already.....love to hear as many opinions on this as possible... There is certainly something innate about marking yourself (for all to see ?) in a way that is permanent....I am also facinated by branding and certain decorative scarification.....but that's the Gorean coming out in me...'perhaps' lol Dog.

What timing...lol I got my first tattoo last mon, japenese kanji on my left forearm meaning princess and prince with eternity symbol in the middle for my two kids. had it drawn up in tokyo by friend so know it true meaning. And boys is it addictive booked to do full sleeve now will be black and grey japenese style with koi and cherry blossums, plus a little unusual twist of a waratah flower, cant wait. Rocker your tatt sounds cool. KJand Nev, tell him he cant afford tatts, he owes you all his money for bikes, it sure costs to keep the kids outfitted hey.

No tats on me but if I got one it would be Felix the Cat and my lover would have to try and find his bag of tricks. A piece of art that has meaning that you want marked on your body for life. That's a tough ask. Choose carefully....you can't divorce your tattoos, honey. That's why I don't have one. Such a commitment!!

Jane, please please PLEASE dont go for the Southern Cross...jmckin: Felix and the bag of tricks is a cool idea. Stop worrying about it, and just do it :) The only people that get all worried about tattoo's, and the fact they are permanent, are those who havent got one... I read a statistic the other day that found less than 1% of people regret their tattoo, and the majority were because of bad artwork, or that they got it whilst drunk.I was brought up in a very strict household, so it was drummed into me that tattoo's were for bikies, and would get you into trouble. I soon realised that my folks might have been embellishing a little... After I got my first, my mum though it was just a joke, and grabbed a scouring pad to remove it. I thought SHE was joking... Ouch. They came to accept it, realised I didnt all of a sudden buy a Harley, and now they are fascinated with my tatts. For me, the funniest thing is the reaction from general people. Little old ladies stop to chat to me about my sleeve, and then dont want to let me go :) But, having a sleeve gives that nice hot girl at the end of the bar something to talk about when she stops you walking by. Oh, and they cant help but touch what they're looking at ;)

I don't have any yet, but I would dearly love to get a dragonfly on my left shoulderblade. Don't know why left has any significance...that's just always where I pictured it. I have always felt an affinity to dragonflies. To me they represent angels and spirits of loved ones...my late sister in particular. I've always felt her close by and watching over me which is why I want it on my shoulderblade so it's like she is just there.

We both got our first name intial's incorporated into each others tattoo's. The "K" in my tattoo is quite obvious and large..although many don't seem to see the obvious..kilee's "T"is tiny, and i'm not too sure i can see it sometimes ...maybe she's trying to tell me something :-) we both love our tatt's, and may consider additional ones in the future. we both have opted for discrete locations..but maybe that's cause we are "Professional" Trev <<< seeing if he can raise the professional debate again, then leave the room and watch from the window...

i have 5 small stars on my neck down from my ears, 3 on one side and 2 on the other. the 3 are for my husband and kids and the 2 are for a lost bf and my grandpa.i do tend to tell some people its just my star rating "5 star" loli loved getting them, and want more but im not sure what. just thinking about getting another one makes me a bit hot. :sim thinking of one down my side from under my boob around to the top of my bum, but i dunno.i really really like tatts on guy and girls for that matter. both my mum and step dad had ones so never had trouble with the parental figures being concerned about it. (mum has a butterfly on her bum, we tell her its turned into a bogong moth hahaha)

Professional... smessional...What is a professional anyway... why is it such a big deal. I could care less if people knew about my lifestyle, and my choice of clothing or the things drawn permently inked onto my skin should have no bearing on my ability to do my job (and they dont!).

Quoting 'kjandnev' Whats your sport? please don't tell me its Mx ......my eldest races Mx and if he gets his number tatt'd i will kill him....or worse cut of his sponsorship....dads still have some power.... even it is the power of the cheque book! haha Nev, no not MX - though I'd love to try that. Mine is ice hockey, and yes - I know the power of the parental chequebook, Mum threatened that one when she found out I had a piercing (only a few years too late), the tattoo - well, I was already paying for everything and she figured I'd defiled myself with a piercing so it wasn't as big a deal.Mine is easily covered up with a shirt or singlet so I too can be a ... "professional".(jane_37: This may be a bit silly, I kinda agree with rockercouple about the southern cross. I see the southern cross itself as something special, and I identify with it and look for it in the sky. But I see it stamped across every Tom, Dick and Harry now - mostly Dicks. So as a tattoo it has that association along with it)

Sonsie, thats just the sort of thing I was talking about....what a great tribute to your dearly departed sis.....why not put it somewhere you can see it, where it inspires you every day ? ....and same same to charli....they often have great meaning to the wearer, whether secret or not.... Dog.

I think I like the thought of it on my back because...I guess it's because I know she is there watching over me even though I can't always see her. Does that make sense? Plus, I can't think of anywhere I'd want it where I could see it. I toyed with the idea of putting it on the inside of my wrist...where it could be covered with a watch if I so chose. Oh, and the fact that my mum cried for hours when I got my ears pierced for the second time...I don't even want to imagine the reaction if she ever saw I had a tattoo LOL
