There are some people out there that for the life of them just cannot lose weight, or if they do, they can only lose a small amount at a slow rate without going to the extreme of exercising 5 or 6 hours a day or having surgery....Obesity is a big concern - it is easy to blame parents who blamed their parents - we need to blame someone dont we? Fast food is easy, its there, sometimes how easy is it to quickly grab some chicken n chips from a take away store, or a packet of chips - well one we dont have to make it ourselves and two its cheaper...... Fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods, meat products, low fat dairy products are expensive....Have a look at the adds on television - macdonalds, red rooster, kfc, chip adds, drink adds that are full of sugar - who do they get to be in their adds - thats right, they get models who have the ideal body - false advertising that if you eat this food you wont gain weight - like bullshit....Depression can also play a very big part in obesity.... So you are overwt and all your life you have been teased, left out, not picked for sport teams, not invited to parties, only have a few friends who can see past that being over wt does not change who that persons on the inside.... So food is a great comforter, it does judge you in any way.....So back to your question - do you think that parents are failing in responsibility - yes and no. fast food is easy, its convenient, it can be cheaper at times. I think each parent should be the best role model for their child, if the parent is concerned about obesity then they should try to get some information to help them. Dont just suffer in silence and hope it will all go away....Get topic Chev

Severely obese parents are failing both themselves and their children, but they're not solely responsible. Things like what children are given to eat at school, and what they are taught about health and nutrition play a big role as well. Cheekyarses made some great comments. It's easy to point fingers, but there are a lot of factors involved. Still, the first changes need to happen at home.

Totally agree it does all begin with what kids are taught at such a young age where the choices are made for them ..- Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'playful1s'Since when did 16-18 become average is what I'd like to know? According to some. Average used was a size 12 ten years ago when I moved here, but is currently size 14 and climbing. Not a good thing, in my opinion.

And unfortunately it's a harsh reality people can judge by appearances and miss what is a beautiful person under the layers .. Adults can make the choices kids (young kids I'm talking) not so much - Posted from rhpmobile

See an obese child, look to the parents for the andwer. We are what we eat (and do)... and kids are guided by their parents. It IS a little harder if both parents are working, or a single parent is raising kids, but ultimately a parents role is to raise and provide for their offspring in the best manner possible, recognizing and dealing with theirs and their kids health is vital. As adults, we are ultimately responsible for what we put into ours and our kids mouths.... and the level of activity we take. DG- Posted from rhpmobile

A sedentary lifestyle.I've been on a dating site that asks the question: "Other than for work or school, how many hours a day to you spend in front of the computer?"The selectable answers were, 1 or less, 1-2, 2-4 and 4+ hours. I would be extremely interested to know what the various people who selected the different answers looked like and I'd wage dollars to doughnuts that (ha!) that the higher the number of hours spent in front of the computer the more overweight - on average - the person would be (there will be exceptions of course). When I was a kid we went out to play, yeah I had a Nintendo but the games on it didn't have a save feature usually, they were the kind of games that you could pick up and play for an hour or so tops before developing carpal tunnel syndrome or having a seizure, haha! Nowadays games are EPIC, people lose their lives to them (trust me, I know, I lost large portions of mine to Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Mariokart growing up)! Most of the time I was out playing footy or just exploring with the neighbourhood kids. These days games like Grand Theft Auto take around 30-50 hours of solid play to complete, hundreds if you do all the little side missions etc, most kids will spend more of their waking time playing video games than they will doing nearly anything else, I don't blame them for wanting to, have you played these things? They're SO engrossing and addictive plus they're great at keeping kids quiet and well behaved (no mummy or daddy can arse about on the internet in peace). My mum once kicked my Nintendo and broke it because I spent more than an hour playing it and she thought I was acting crazy (probably not her sanest moment either but honestly I thank her for it now) nowadays many parents don't limit their kids' play time on video games as they prefer them to do that quietly than have to actually do any parenting things like encourage them to join sports teams or clubs which would involve taking them to practice, picking them back up again, car pooling with a bunch of other rowdy kids etc...Nevermind the kids though even, look at adults: I go to the gym 3 times a week with my current lady friend and we only ever see maybe 4 or 5 other people who are there as regularly as us, the rest just seem to come and go as they please with no discernible plan of action in what they're doing. They have no drive or attention, that's what happens when you get home and you have 50+ channels of digital TV to distract you brain from having to make any coherent thoughts beyond, "hmm, I'm hungry, wonder what's in the fridge that I don't have to bother cooking?"It's not what we eat so much, adults and children alike can eat whatever the hell they please provided they're active enough. I eat like a horse, a fucking massive fat bastard horse at that, but my weight barely fluctuated because I work out consistently. Consistency is key.

Fortunately for me i enjoy cooking so would rather spend the time cooking myself a nice meal rather than getting take away, i suppose time constraints on busy parents make the fast food even more tempting :) As far as time spent in front of the computer perhaps a system where the internet only stays connected so long as the treadmill is going ? :). Or perhaps we should all have more aerobic intensive sex? I like that option :P- Posted from rhpmobile

I should also point out the biggest contributor to my personal obesity was alcohol consumption, i became a heavy drinker before peaking at 98KG's, which at 5'7 was excessive, after cutting back considerably on my alcohol intake i'm down to a much more respectable 80Kg's.

Not in my house! Convienience foods are usually a treat once a week. I grow as many veges in season as I can. I make all my own cakes and buscuits. Very little food comes pre packaged. Yes my kids play computer games and yes they watch tv. They also walk a lot, play sport and socialise with thier peers. It is like everything else in life.... You need a balance!- Posted from rhpmobile

I give my kids maccas, as a treat. Usually we have a take away meal once in the weekend, but, once only. However - I do expect to be slaughtered for this - for my life, being on the road 6 days a week, let me break this down. Average price I've paid for a decent T-Bone steak and wilted salad $23-$26. I would eat the steak, and part of the salad. The veges I have seen and tasted, are watery, lack texture, and taste, and i might add lack nutritional value as a result. Average downtime 30mins. A maccas meal for me $12 if I'm starving. Downtime: ~10 mins. Ok but let's not just concentrate on the nutritional side of things for a moment. How many decent restaurants do you see that accepts vehicles of 26 metres in length? I don't ever recall seeing a b-double parked anywhere near my local RSL club, which I might add, serve beautiful food, and the portion/price ratio is just right. I can answer this question....none. The reason for this is simply because heavy vehicle access is prevented by either local council, or the department of roads in the state(RTA, VicRoads, etc). I'm not blaming my waistline regurgitation on anyone, however, decent places for ME whilst on the road aren't marketed for to the minority, as they're geared to achieve maximum turnover from their locals, which is sensible, but, it truly offers very little choice of menu. Not too long ago, I changed jobs to facilitate a better choice for me, which is cooking my own food using a two burner gas stove. I now use my fridge for fresh food. To put another dimension on this discussion, also not too long ago I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. What I found out through my research, and talking to my doctors, is that weight gain can be symptomatic of such a sleep disorder. I hope Freya doesn't mind me mentioning her in this post, but even Freya pointed out to me in a recent phone conversation, that the body starts to crave carbohydrates when sleep quality is compromised. I was actually a little surprised to learn that, but I understand that fact from my own experiences. As since the change of job, and proper sleep management through using an APAP/CPAP machine, I've lost some 5-10cm off my waist since early July. While I will acknowledge that it is the patents role to facilitate, whereas is practicable a healthy menu, it does have to be said that not ALL cases can be put at the feet of the parents. - Posted from rhpmobile

Hell yeah, alcohol really adds to the poundage but one hopes that isn't the case with the kiddies, haha! Can't encourage then to have lots of sex for aerobics either so I guess the exercise machine powered internet connection may well be the way of the future...- Posted from rhpmobile

Men have described me as fun, gorgeous, intelligent, sexy, confident and give a lot........ BUT!!!! As I struggle with GP and Dietician, PT etc to loose weight need to pump my metabolism more than most....... What the feck do you think you have to judge me as some fat slobbing lazy cow........ Very disappointed in my fellow RHP, brought minded and accepting folk.......?

I think the government should have an obesity tax on foods that have high sugar or fat content. This would force them to recreate the food to lower fat content.

An obesity tax?? Lmfao you've got some pretty whacked ideas for that.... Ok, you tax all high sugar and fatty foods.....then what??? Does that fix the obesity that's caused by medical conditions like thyroid?? Diabetes?? Taxes don't fix the problems, they just monetarily penalise people for their purchase. Take a look at the price of cigarettes.....has the higher taxes stopped the sale of tobacco?? Maybe a little, but if the cigarette companies weren't still finding it a viable market they wouldn't continue to offer them eh?? - Posted from rhpmobile

Obesity is already more prevalent in underprivileged families. They can't afford the price of high quality foods and live mainly on cheaper alternatives such as sausages or pasta. Do you really want to add to their financial burden? This issue has no quick fix as it is very complex and the causes are numerous. Often it is the fault of the parents or their situation but sometimes the fault lays in the individual. Some people cannot be saved from themselves. One other thing, don't go confusing a dress size with obesity. My Jennylee is a size sixteen. She is beautiful and healthy. People are built in all shapes and sizes and yet so many people have a tendency to select certain attributes as ideal. I don't have wash board abs, never have, not even when I was running eight k's daily in my late teens and early twenties. I'm well shy of six foot two (very well shy of it, although I do have the eyes of blue) and I don't have a shlong that would choke a horse but I'm the best Jensman I can be. Keep your ideals for your list of preferences in your profile and allow people to live their lives without judgemental people telling them how they are doing it wrong.

Tax? Yeah..... because we all need more tax.... and you just know every cent will go towards obesity prevention programs, right?!! Stupid idea. And so contradictory!!!! We cry out at government to stay out of our lives....and demand people take responsibility for their own actions... ....and them we contradict ourselves by asking government to do something.... and regulate what we should be regulating ourselves?! Government doesn't decide what we put in our mouthes...... WE do!! Tax. Stupid idea. DG
