Pen pals without pens.

July 24 2014

Good evening Ladies and Gents. :) You may have seen in a previous thread of mine or two that as a fly in fly out worker it is really hard (for me at least) to maintain and or even start a friendship with such little face to face contact, and time restricting circumstances. It was my hope that some of you, men and women, I'm not partial to either, would either like to text, call, email, or FaceTime and Skype. I do it almost every night to my friends and family back home and it would just be nice to have a conversation with someone new. For the fellas, might catch up for a beer when I get home, or sporting activities, or events. As for the ladies, all this and more if you so choose, given the right circumstances etc. We can keep our level of friendship at whatever you deem appropriate. :) Or even spark a debate or two in this thread so I can have a follow and put my 2 cents in :P Thanks in advance, Crezz :) - Posted from rhpmobile

Can imagine you would have your work cut out for ya ! If you want to try and keep in contact with some of the souls on this site, I'd suggest you get into the 'webchat' area of this site. You can check it out and sit quietly for a little while to see who's who, and once you see a few bodies that may resonate, start up a conversation or two and see how it carries along. Most are quite friendly and easy to chat with, and it is relatively easy to keep in contact with same. You get 'real-time' feed back, so you can see who may be easier to keep in contact with, rather than trying to start up new topics in Forums all the time. Just an idea. Cheers,Tall

I don't have the time to commit to more people but I wish you luck. I can imagine that being a fifo worker can be quite isolating. I think you have a really mature approach to your situation. Good luck :)

Working up in those isolated areas must be a real drag, good money to earn but, expensive in the social scene, if any exists. So we believe, therefore can only imagine life being pretty lonely for the workers trying to earn a buck. Agree with Tall, the chat rooms are a brilliant set up for just the sort of communication you seek, maybe not. Have you even looked at the chat rooms? As to the thread of this topic, maybe you could give us some thoughts as too why you are doing this work and if it is just work, or do you have some sort of plan in the future because of it? Thanks tall for the heads up :) I will definitely check this out, I usually am only on my phone which is the hard part because we sign an agreement not to use the 'free wifi' for pornographic material. So I don't think I will be able to go on my laptop as such. I don't blame the company for doing that, it looks better in the public eye etc etc but yea. I'll see how I go. Thanks ralf :) it does get pretty lonely but mostly boring which I'm sure allows people to 'think' a lot more than they should about certain things back home. Which can escalate situations beyond where they need be. Madotara, you are absolutely right, before this job I was working in Brisbane at that new trampoline venue called Bounce Inc and it was a bunch of fun and the whole work crew are great people. This doesn't even compare to that. The money is always good, yes, but the social aspect, of which is a big part of my life because that's how I am as a person doesn't get to shine through up here. To be honest, my game plan is to try and be here for at least a year, in that time I would like to try and save for an investment property and then for a place of my own. Those are the big goals, then eventually a new car and traveling and all kinds of things along the way. For example I booked myself in for a 2 night stay in Byron when I get back to have a good time and wind down from the 6 week stint I'm currently doing :) that's the game plan. As for relationships etc, that's the main reason I started this thread and the last, I started seeing a girl 2 weeks before coming up, everything was going well, got a week in and she pulled the plug. I get it, I know it's hard, I've seen what it can do to couples who have spent years together. It just sucks that it has to be this way because without the right personality combination, trust and respect it makes for a very hard bunch of prerequisites to have to meet before having an ongoing relationship with a FIFO. - Posted from rhpmobile

..just try to see someone on your site. It may sound illogical, but single women on the mines are dealing with the same issues you are.Along with the need to filter the sleazy guys from the decent. Be the decent guy.

Message me if you'd like a pen pal. I have many mates (both male and female) that do FIFO, my ex was also FIFO. I understand the isolation, the dreams vs reality. Happy to chat!! P.S. Bounce Inc is awesome fun!! - Posted from rhpmobile

As far as the chatrooms go, it is somewhat easier to do via computer than by phone. Also, at times the chatrooms 'freeze' and you can get kicked out of them by no fault of your own. I imagine this would be easier to manoeuvre with a computer than by phone. Probably suggest you try the chatrooms next time you get home to get familiar with it all, and then see how it shifts across to phone if you get the opportunity. Hope it all goes well. The people in chatrooms are generally good to get along with. I've struck up many good conversations over the years with various people. Tall

Some noble goals there Crezz. :-) Would you consider being in a chat room as pornographic though? Would RHP be off limits too? I think that is a bit rude to ask you guys not to watch any porn. I know other fifo people that spend time on RHP though. Or you could use your phone's internet to log in via your laptop perhaps?
