Tattoo.....Do you have one?

May 24 2016

I've often toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo for a very long time and seriously considering taking the plunge. I'm not thinking of getting a large one. Just a small one. On the back of my neck. The only problem is, I have a low pain threshold and a bit of a wimp when it comes to pain, so, seriously.....how much does it hurt? I understand it depends where you have it can depend on the level of pain and, as the back of the neck is a tender area, I'm expecting that might be painful. Another question I have is, how quickly does the colour fade?

You can get medical numbing cream that you rub on half an hr before you start the tatt. Buy it at the chemist and slap it on. Happy days. I have a few tatts and will get a few more before I leave this world. I have used the numbing cream for half of them. I never had to stop due to not handling the pain.Yes the pain is different depending where you get it. My worst one was a toe ring. Easiest was inner wrist.

And both are reasonably large, and I'm planning more! One on my shoulder, reasonably painless, lots of shading in the greys, no colour! I have a cherry blossom tree on my rib cage, left hand side! The only colour is in the blossoms. My son drew the tattoo, and it's my tree of life. I have key dates look like they've been 'carved' into the tree. Two sets of blossoms, one for each of my children, if you look closely you'll see their year of birth in the the blossom :) Whilst at the parlour, one of the other tattooists said ' I love it when someone commits to a painful tattoo without numbing cream' Faaaarrrrkkkkk, he wasn't wrong ;) Mary xx

Imo pain is part of the process, cant handle pain then don't get one. I have 40 hrs worth of tattooing, all but one was done without analgesia. I had a tattoo done in a village near the Burmese border that was traditional, ie; done with sharpened bamboo, I needed beer to complete that one as it was the most painful experience I have ever had. There is a dropkick murphys song about neck tattoos, its worth listening too before you get it.

We both have tattoo's, Mrs Adelaide has hers on the back of her neck and she said it was more annoying than painful.I find the more sensitive the skin the more painful. Good luck and be warned once you get one they almost become addictive!

On my body, definitely my lower belly to hide the stretch marks thanks to my kids. Also always wanted to get one in bum/buttocks area. Need to update my back tatt as well it's so ugly I got it done when I was 16 with my bestie. - Posted from rhpmobile

Its not until someone mentions something or they see it and comment. This one was NOT painful, just more tolerable, slight scratching vibration. I understand how you are feeling prior as I was like that too before my first tattoo. I have a huge fear of needles, go figure. I use good ol "Rawleigh's" medicated ointment or just a zinc/castor oil cream, worked like a charm. I have found that a lot better than say Bepanthen cream. Use what ever works for you and your body and skin, as ever one is different. Good luck with it. I would love to see what you end up choosing to get. Ms Foxy x

...the location on your body varies for pain. My chest was the only spot where I just had to grit my teeth and bear it...it was difficult to think of anything but the pain for that one. In other places it can be almost hypnotic, once the body is shocked enough and starts to naturally numb the area. You should be aware too that the heavier needle will be felt more than the fine, detailed one. To give you an idea, look at the tattoo's on my arms and shoulders. The heavy, solid black lines have quite a visual impact. I have a dragons head on my back..not shown..that was done with a finer needle, and the comparison is like a thin Biro pen to a Texta marker.So...I guess, have a think about what sort of visual impact you want your artwork to have too.

Both on my fleshy arse. Same area on opposite cheeks. One hurt and one didnt. Depends on your frame of mind a fair bit. The Annie didnt hurt much. Maybe the significance within my mind numbed the pain. If it has meaning to you, short term pain but long term meanings has the pain long forgotten. I wear mine with pride. Its me.

I have a small ish one in my inner wrist. Didnt hurt at all, was just more annoying than anything. My bigger issue was trying not to scratch the itch a few days later!

I'm thinking of having one done on the back of my neck. I need to be able to cover it while I'm at work but want it in a spot where I can show it if I want. So, I guess it'll be hair down at work and hair up when I'm out and about and want to show it off. I love dragons and, as I've been collecting them for over 20 years, it doesn't look like I'm ever going to grow out of my dragon fetish. I also love the yin yang symbol and it's a very symbolic image for me. Tonight I met with the most reputable tattooist in town and discussed a picture I have of two dragons intertwined and both holding a yin yang, but, as I don't want it to be really large, I may need to find something else as the detail won't really stand out unless I want it to be big enough to start to show round the sides of my neck (not sure how that will go down at work). So I'm looking at a few different images tonight. I'll put a picture up for a little bit once I get it done, but I need to decide first.

Im doing my left arm (in 3D) at the moment, self inflicted pain is harder to take.I havent got any on my neck yet but I reckon going over the spine where the skin is thin will tickle some.I was going to get a barcode on my neck many years ago but decided not to, I will get a realistic 3D spider there, just to frighten women and kiddies and to keep the flies away of course }:D>May have to get some cobwebs tattooed on my balls as well, hmmm maybe tattoo two tumbleweeds on my sack instead hahhah 🕸🕸🌑🌑

Like you '. I toyed with the idea for years . In that time I viewed heaps before settling on a tribal design I really liked. I downloaded it and sat on it for about 3 years. One day I bumped into a mate I haven't seen in years who just happened to be a tattoo artist. One thing lead to another and before I knew it wanted to know when he could start. That was about a year ago now and have some very nice work on my top half shoulder down my arm to wear my sleeve would normally end. The reason being is I keep it covered while dealing with my clients. I figure what they don't know won't hurt them or my dealings with them. So did it hurt ? Not really. , I held a normal conversation while it was being done. The little discomfort was bearable and I could of easily sat longer if needed. I think the main concern is to take your time deciding what you want. No good jumping in and having regrets for something you only half like.. My advice is once you decide what you want ... Just do it.. I don't have any regrets.. Amos

mines just a little one on the back of my shoulder blade, I found the process felt akin to dragging a compass point through my skin. Not enjoyable in the slightest to me - but I also wasn't heavily invested in the idea of getting a tattoo, it was just something I got done, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Quoting 'WiccaWitch' I'm thinking of having one done on the back of my neck. I need to be able to cover it while I'm at work but want it in a spot where I can show it if I want. I also love the yin yang symbol and it's a very symbolic image for me. Small tattoos overtime tend to blur. The tribal dragon tattoos imo are awful as they look like stickers you get in a show bag. Go traditional Japanese dragon Tonight I met with the most reputable tattooist in town and discussed a picture I have of two dragons intertwined and both holding a yin yang, but, as I don't want it to be really large, I may need to find something else as the detail won't really stand out unless I want it to be big enough to start to show round the sides of my neck (not sure how that will go down at work). The dragon on my side was the most painful, I nearly walked out without having it finished. But, I think that was partially due to the artist and problems he had with his equipment. I had it re-done a few months later at a different place and it definitely didn't hurt as much. Re fading, a lot will depend on how much the tattoo is exposed to the elements, particularly sun.

When it's new . No alcohol based creams or lotions including soaps. Wash by patting lightly don't rub , and light pat dry using clean paper towel. Sparingly use bepathonol ( I think that's how it's spelt ) .. It's a gentle cream used for babies in a mauve coloured box and tube. Keep out of chlorine for at least 3 months . Sea water is OK once healed and use sun cream even if it's only on your tatt. I read a lot at the start and mine is still as good as the first day. Hope this helps

Is the one you can see in my profile pic. It is the only one I have. I don't do things in halves so once I decided and designed what I wanted, I just went and got it, even though it is fairly large for a first tattoo and I knew at the time it was in a fairly painful area. I thought it would be worst on my rib cage as my skin is very thin there and directly over the bones. The opposite was the case, the lower it was the more painful. On my ribs was still painful but funny as I could feel the bones vibrating under the gun. Fading is not my worry where mine is. As said previously, the more sun the more fading and mine doesn't get much sun really. My kids names are written quite small in there so I am more concerned with them blurring, by which I mean the ink spreading into larger lines and being less defined. But while that may happen I know they are there with me always and I am happy with that.

Thank you for all your comments and advice. For those who have requested a follow up on this, I took the plunge on Friday and had it done. It's not at the back of my neck as originally planned, but more just below the neck, just above the bit between my shoulder blades. It's not very big and was nowhere near as painful as I thought it would be. My wonderful daughter came with me and kept me distracted with her constant chatter and fed me pieces of chocolate. I won't be getting any more as the initial plan was to get just one. I've posted a photo and will keep it as my profile pic for a couple of weeks for those who wanted to have a look (once the photo is approved). xXxXx

Congrats on getting inked! I hope you love it? I have a lotus flower about the same size and about an inch lower than yours. Unfortunately I've got a condition where my nervous system is in overdrive so they're always extremely painful for me. I have two other smaller ones but want to get a large piece somewhere. I've been saving images for a few years so I can get something drawn up I like.
