The end of Patriarchy in the known Universe

July 17 2017

The new Dr Who is a woman, Jodie Whittaker, as with any new Doctor my judgment is reserved until we see her in action. Her current companion is openly gay so the show is opening new dimensions in space time, could be interesting !What say you ?

I haven't watched the show since the arrival if the most recent Dr, (apologises to the devoted, I know I'll lose Dr Who street cred) so I'll tune in again to watch the new series. Really interested in seeing how it plays out and really like the actor chose having seen her in Broadchurch ( coincidence?) and my fav show Black Mirror. Have enjoyed watching a few facebook posts which mainly were DrWho geeks correcting the headlines that it isn't the first female Time Lord, only first Dr. I'm enthused!

Used to watch it when I was a kid but not really into it these days. Might watch to see what this new actor is like, saw her in Black Mirror and she seemed pretty good in that. Have seen a few comments on FB complaining about a female Doctor. Seriously to those people...you can accept an extraterrestrial being whizzing through time and space in a ship that looks like a phone box, and who never dies but instead regenerates into a completely new body and personality, but you can't accept that it takes the form of a woman

If they keep the character true to the other doctors then maybe it'll work, however if they do anything like the new Ghostbusters film the franchise is ruined. It is possible to make a famous male lead female and pull it off. The best example to me is when they remade Battlestar Galactica and changed Starbuck to female, everyone scoffed at the idea but the female Starbuck was amazing! And went on to be probably the best character in the series.I also highly rate the new female leads in the Starwars franchise! It's all about just writing well developed characters and not even thinking about their gender. It's when you start pandering to the social justice warrior crowd that you get something like the Ghostbusters remake

I am also not a Dr Who watcher - gave me shocking nightmares as a kid, and I haven't ever been able to move past that. Love that the producers/creators are addressing the patriarchy and homophobia is one fell swoop! Maybe it's time for me to face my demons Also love you bringing it to my attention

And in regards to general commentary regarding sexism that this has raised in the public, I use the Pepper test of egalitarianism (as opposed to the Bechdel test), if characters can't be swapped around with another gender, race, other minority, it probably problematic for stereotypes and sexism :)

so keen to see Lady Doctor Who at work, she has huge capability for fuel social change. I've been a Dr Who fan ever since TV came to my house in Australia. Dr's are known for being smart, witty, innovative, caring these are not gender specific qualities!Lady Dr Who will be showcasing females' huge potential / ability to kick arse for justice, fun, business, democracy, environment and diplomacy.I hope this momentous change to female lead for Dr Who educates generations of (existing)/ upcoming business and political leaders to accept, help and even appreciate, mentor and follow leaders who are women. When Earth is led by more women and people who think in a caring strength based model we all will be able to live in a Better place.

I've always admired the Doctors avoidance of violence and determination to find another way. I know that won't change it will just be "same same but different ". Should be really interesting.

One of the best iterations of The Master character was a woman - "Missy" absolutely rocks in that role.

Helen Razer has written a piece on the topic, and as you would suspect - if you're at all familiar with her writing and opinions - she's not impressed. I don't entirely agree with her on her dismissal of increased cultural representation as being any sort of progression for women, but as usual she makes some valid points about the fact that unless we ditch our shitty, exploitative, consumer-driven capitalism model, major progress isn't really happening. Her article is titled Think a female Doctor Who changes things? You're dreamin', if anyone wants to have a read of it (be warned, she's not a fan of The Handmaid's Tale either, for those who are).

To me (as a non watcher since I hit puberty lol), it's just another tv show about just another fictitious character. Whether they're male or female is less relevant than how well they play the role. Isn't that how it should be?? All the social commentary... I find ironic. The very people pushing the barrow that gender should be irrelevant.... are now trumpeting the importance of the actors gender for social change. Odd, really. - Posted from rhpmobile

But haven't had time to watch episodes after matt Smith. The last De who just didn't appeal to me or my kids. We love David Tennant. Weeping Angels our favourite and the scariest. Anyhoooo, I'd be interested to see how the new De who goes. Mire intriguing that it's a woman and the dynamics with the companions. I'd like to see how the characters develop. It certainly brings a sexual spin into the mix and interested on how far they will push the boundaries. I'd be interested when they revisit old characters (which thwy occasionally do) who have previous history, romantic or otherwise, with the doctor. Will follow this when I get back. Curiosity factor mainly. I wonder if my boys will take to it. They're pretty liberal but they switch off if it gets too political.

Quoting 'Luck_Dragon' Helen Razer has written a piece on the topic, and as you would suspect - if you're at all familiar with her writing and opinions - she's not impressed. Her article is titled Think a female Doctor Who changes things? You're dreamin', if anyone wants to have a read of it (be warned, she's not a fan of The Handmaid's Tale either, for those who are).I was a huge Dr Who when I was a kid, it's all a bit too fast for my tastes these days though, preferred the week-long serial style of old. I honestly don't give a shit about the gender of the Doctor. Having said that, people on the one had are saying ''it's a huge leap'' and then, usually, following that up with ''big deal about the Doctor being a woman, nothing will change''. To me that's a bit of a contradiction. The Handmaid's Tale is great, but I'm not a woman so can't truly comment on what to make of the whole feminist angle on it. It's very interesting though, and I'm only up to episode 6, that the whole New World Order thing appears to have been instigated by the Commander's wife. To me it's just great drama and thoroughly enjoyable.

Has joined the fray, triggered by the gutter press in the UK publishing nude pics of Jodie Whittaker. So fucking tacky. And Dragon, there's even a spray on white male privilege. I guess some people don't handle change well. I'm totally over this gender war crap, it's not meaningless but it's so spiteful and divisive. meh, later.

All of those women the other Doctors have already been with, and keeps coming / going back to. How are they going to feel if the old Doc is a woman ?
