They all sound like 1950's reasons to me. All very superficial on behalf of the females. Not sure if this is your perceived opinion or if you got these reasons from somewhere? And the 'male' one you mentioned could equally apply to females. I left my husband 3 years and it wasn't for any of the reasons listed. It wasn't financial, he didn't abuse or cheat on me, he was a great dad.....I was just miserable. Had been together since I was 16 and he was 24. I'd grown and changed in 15 years and he hadn't, plain and simple. I wasn't intellectually or physically stimulated and more importantly, my emotional needs weren't being met. We also had two young children which didn't help the stress factors. I think these days it's less of a social taboo to separate or divorce than it was in the 50's. It's more accepted and thus occurs more often. I'm not saying this is a 100% improvement, as would I have tried more to make it work if I had no other option?...,or would I, for example, have become an alcoholic or cheated on my husband in an attempt to shake the bonds of entrapment. Very, very complex topic you've brought up. - Posted from rhpmobile

If not then let's go the full monty...check out these divorce rate stats: 1867 - 1879 - 3%1880 - 1886 - 4%1887 - 1890 - 5%1891 - 1897 - 6%1898 - 1900 - 7% Although, I do kinda dig the look of a woman in whale bone corset who also calls me sir! As for the children, they would feel trapped...in a harness pulling the ploughs!

Including my own grandparents who stayed in very unhappy and abusive relationships because they had no choice. There was stigma, and even more crucially, a single woman often didn't have a way supporting herself. I don't see a return to the 50s a good thing, rather a regressive step. I'm astounded it's even being suggested. - Posted from rhpmobile

to what others above have said, so what if there's more single people these days? Why is that a bad thing at all? If you ask me we need to move beyond the ridiculous 'old fashioned value' of relationships being considered so important and singledom being akin to having the Plague.

Sounds to be like Chev as being watching Seven Year Switch. Couple of the women have mentioned those reasons for being unhappy. (Love the show myself!)

Quoting 'Summersolstice' Unless of course you think any attention is good attention, in which case carry on. The old saying...''There's no such thing as bad publicity'' is often associated with P. T. Barnum, the 19th century American showman and circus owner. Barnum was a self-publicist of the first order and never missed an opportunity to present his wares to the public. Carrying on, as it were, seems to be the order of the day!

No contraceptive pill. Women working outside the home frowned upon ..no Permanency in the Public Service for married women. Police and courts not interested in domestic violence. No child care No after school care. Women paid less for same work Proving adultery basically only way to get a divorce for women. When women brought charges of rape few men were convicted, mostly the woman was vilified and blamed No support for rape victims. Tertiary education for women was limited to a few women who could afford it. Most women left school at fourteen ,education seen as a waste because women become wives and mothers. No antibiotics. Yep,lets go back to the past. Q

Were often referred to as "old maids",if they were single. Most people did not think that single women were single by choice. Lesbian couples were rarely viewed with suspicion if they lived together. It was illegal to be a male homosexual, many men ended up in jail, however there was no law against lesbianism . Termed buggery, anal sex was illegal. Q

you are right....Homosexuality USED to carry the DEATH sentence 100 years ago..50m years ago, it was reduced to life imprisonment..25 years ago.. to 10 years.. 20 years ago.. it was frowned upon..15 years ago, it was pushed to be made legal..Now.. it is virtually legal...in 10 years time.. it will become "Compulsory"

A terrible crime in the war of the sexes is that some men, who as boys in care were abused by women (nuns), have no case of sexual abuse because it was not considered a crime as the boys at the age of 14 were considered over the age of consent. The laws have been changed in the years since. I think you'd find all of the reasons you've offered could apply for women and men too btw Chev. Honestly, I think a lot of the change has been people asserting their place in society outside acceptable standards. Families are under attack where both parents have to work to support the family unit thanks to the government and its changes to the support for parents that enabled the ones that wanted to stay home to take care of their own kids. Peachy

However even relationships that have it good break up for silly reasons the bond of a couple is gone or as in the vows better or for worse.Seems now things get hard lets split and not wait forbetter times to return. Well we could go back to the day children where seen and not heard females where wedded off to boys there family choose for them and often they where only still young teenagers ,people used to hide there dirty secrets all the time ,children got abused by family members , teachers and other people adults ,females got raped and beaten By there husbands and other men, but this never got brought up it was all hidden swept under the carpet , the cheating spouses that never got found out because ,it was never talk about ,the basted children where often adopted out or worse . So many things that where taboo and hidden yet still done just never brought to our attention , until now where the news is showing us war as it just happens the news is pretty much right there as it unfolds , where we went wrong was hiding the bad stuff before hand ,and the 50tys bought us TV !! so really that's probably when we started to realise how bad the cover ups were and there was no way the could stay hidden and so that was the start to seeing and realising we need to Change

I'm surprised at a post such as this on rhp! Personally I believe the more society moves away from monogamous relationships the happier couples will be. I truly believe that humans are not meant to be monogamous and the pressure of monogamy is a huge reason life long partnerships break down. I'm not saying I don't believe that having a life partner is not achieveable but I do believe that if that partnership is monogamous for life it it likely to be unsuccessful. Obviously it is up to the people in the relationship to work out their own boundaries but I am a fan of the saying, 'A couple who plays together, stays together.' I can't imagine another 20 or 30 years of having sex with just the one person.....but hey, that's just my take on it...xx L - Posted from rhpmobile

you could still have the old timey gender roles without requiring the 'traditional' couple arrangement.
