I love to go out and dance...it never fails to make me feel better, even I don't get the choreography or for some reason i'm just out of sync with the music, or I'm not following my partner properly. or I go out to great dinner or prepare a meal for my family and friends and surround myself with good food and people who love me.

Well, playing music really loud and you cant go past the 80's..love to listen to Journey, Whitesnake..and dancing around the house..Walking thru the bush with my dogs, with or without headphones, sometimes the sounds of nature can do the trick just as well...A bloody good laugh, Robin Williams, Billy Connelly and Carl Barron are faves..Talking with friends over the phone/msn/facebook...a hug never goes astray and last but certainly not least, curled up on the couch or in bed with my lover, nothing beats a cuddle from that special someone....

I agree with u helping someone else makes u forget about ur own troubles and remembering that there is always someone who is less fortunate then u r !! but doing anything to distract urself from thinking always works for me!

Walking, preferably in the mountains or with my mutts, swimming in the ocean or local pool, chocolate, a conversation with family or friends, playing the piano or guitar which I am learning, has a way of making you relax and think about nothing else except the piece you are learning...did I mention chocolate ;)

When I'm in a rut... it's usually due to a lack of motivation... putting things off till tomorrow... which hopefully never comes... but then a vital bill has to be paid or the gendarmes will confiscate the drivers license or I'm stuck with cold showers or I run out of toilet rolls. But before catastrophe strikes, I'm usually looking for some diversion from the boring and mundane. If there's no one to visit, no new shows in town, no toys to buy, it's not meal time, nothing worthy on TV and nought new to read... then theres always the trusty old reliable fall back.... porn. That always gets me motivated, though that's not necessarily in a productive way. The mind soon enters into a fantasy world of beautiful bodies and amorous goings on that needs a good wank to feel something worthwhile has been achieved. But when totally drained of energy... there's always RHP which magically brings a good part back to life... not unlike porn.

The secret for me is to get out of the house for one... then helping someone else.. even if it's doing their lawns, cleaning their house, fixing their computer, stuff that means I can be distracted from my own problems. Getting out and partying is good too, but when you're down you need to steer clear of the booze... it can really mess you up more so than normal, well it does me anyway. Sex is great too, but it needs to be with someone that wants you bad rather than just sex for sex sake... Oh - and chocolate... guess it's the feminine side of me but I loooove chocolate. Wayne x PS - sitting here in the Qantas Club waiting for a flight and have to cover the entire left hand side of the screen with my hand lest the old gent next to me have a heart attack at TRish's pic ;-)

when im down, I take the advice of one of my mentors - shut up and train. my natural reaction is to talk about my problem incessantly, so in order to avoid letting it consume me, i hit the gym hard and the problems seem so less significant after a good workout! thats just me...

a massive thing people dont realize that has a major affect ur personal wellbeing is diet. at one bad stage in my life i lost 15 kilos in a short amount of time & got really depressed. i didnt realize but because my diet was really bad i was Vitamin B deficient - Vit B is absolutely essential to the body - it plays a major role in mood stabilizing. if u go to a doctor & tell them that u r depressed they will generally offer u anti depressants. they will do this before they ask any questions about diet, lifestyle etc. my advice go to a naturopath. then take a good multi vitamin & fish oil. drink lots of water always. exercise - even if u dont feel like it, it will get the natural endorphins going & give u a natural high. eat well, get some sleep, take long relaxing baths, get a massage & talk to people that u r closest to. If u need someone for some outside advice 'go get it!' dont think that u can handle everything on ur own - there are so many resources out there to help - use them! u can by the supplement SamE which is also a natural treatment for depression - much better to try something natural than prescription so give it a try remember tho that for some depression is a medical condition. if u have tried everything else & cant shake it then see a gp just in case - get them to refer u to a psychiatrist who can diagnose mental illness such as depression oh & who could forget?!! good sex always does wonders for my soul :P hope this helps & hugs to all x

Fo me music both gets me down and lifts me up....... Sometimes a song just resonates and takes you to another place.... I was driving today, a whole heap of shit on my mind and a song came on the radio....I cant even remember what it was now, but it had me singing (and I'm a shit singer) and laughing and changed my whole day..... Other things that take my mind off it all: Sex. Wow, that was a long list......but seriously: Hugs. A phone call from one of my kids. The rain. Thinking how lucky I am. Did I mention sex ?.....dammit my mind keeps coming back to it..... When my team wins - hardly fucking ever ! When I do a good job. Sex. The beach - A swim at the end of the day washes all the worry away. Has anyone heard the Dalai Lama giggle ? That dude always makes me smile ! Peace everybody. Dog.

Interesting thread really, I have suffered from a couple of major depressive episodes over my life and the signs aree always the same, either putting on a heap of wieght or losing a heap of wieght in a short time (ok love the six pack that comes with it but hate the results). Cant sleep, or sleeping patterns all over the place, irritable unable to motivate myself to do even simple things etc. After suffering severe depression I can tell you its not something you would wish on anyone, however, what do I do when I need to concentrate on the good not the bad: 1) Exercise, not the sweating crunching kill me now workout but simple exercise to raise the heart rate a little, also getting out in the sun to get a shot of Vitamin D is always a good thing. I live in Canberra and in winter when its cold and dark and miserable we get a large spike in Seasonal Affective Disorder, this is related to lake of Vitamin D. So in winter a solarimum for 2 mins every 3 weeks. Not to tan but just to get a concentrated shot. 2) Finding things Im good at to reinforce that I am a worthwhile person, this could be my kids, a sport, a hobby, business, etc. Just focus on the good things and what you bring to them 3) Family and Friends, lets be honest even when everything else has gone to crap your kids will always love you and a hug from them can make even the worst thing go away. Friends, good close honest trustworthy friends. My friends dont judge they listen and advise. 4)Sleep, you must sleep no sleep = bad decsisions and increased risk of depression getting worse. Even if it means that you take a sleeping supplement, I use restavit an over the counter non addictive sleeping aid when I need 5) Professional advice, honestly sometimes things just get overwhelming engage a counsellor, phycologist etc to talk to, doesnt mean your crazy it means your smart. I have been using phycologists for a few years as a business owner and a single dad, sometimes I just need someone to talk to and recieve advice off and provide me with strategies for coping. Depression sucks, having a bad day is not so bad, but if that bad day goes on for a few days take it as a warning sign that perhaps something is happening to you, get help, get it early and enjoy the wondeful life you have beeen given Greg

Neither of us are prone to depression, but we do find the beach and the sea a highly spiritual place. So if we need a cheer up or to feel invigorated, a nice walk along the beach (Especially at dawn) or a good old blast on the jtski is just what our doctor ordered.>Wonders if the lovely ladies in their hot little kinis has anything t do with it??????NaaaaaahWorks for us anyway!

Great post Surferboy, particularly number 2.I've been on a self improvement course (boss sent us all on it) and we were told how the mind can pick up on certain words in conversations you can't even hear what they're saying, words like our names, and derogatory words. Apparently for every bad thing said about us it takes around 7-10 good things to cancel that out, because let's face it, nobody likes to be disliked. So, while praising ourselves is a very important ritual that we should make sure we do each day as well as praising those around us, actually participating in something you are good at is an excellent decision. I hadn't thought about that. I guess it's probably one of the best activities you can do when you're down, because not only are you doing something that you enjoy (thereby picking up your mood), but you're doing it for the reason that you're good at it, and your mind will be conscious of this and therefore it should help to lift your mood, because you're getting praise from your conscious self - if that made sense.

before burning bridges so that you can't say how sorry you are after over-reacting. Something I've been guilty of more than once lately!Count from 1-10 before reacting, in my case I prefer the alphabet when I remember. Write tips like the above that work for you and positive affirmations down where you can see them cos having a poor memory and concentration level when you're feeling down is typical. Try not to be too hard on yourself or anyone else. Seek out someone trustworthy and tell them what is going on for you at the very least. Most importantly, recognise what is going on for you and take that first step to feeling better, we all deserve it.And HotAz... urs is a wise head on young shoulders... the mind is where it's all at.From me... When I am down I go and help someone less fortunate than me. If you can focus on helping someone else then you forget why you are feeling low. Also it is making good karma for yourself

1. Follow any of the above you think applies to you. 2. After that sit down, think for a while and find a way of avoiding going through 1 and 2. Just my 2c.

Claire Weekes writes books (Help for Your Nerves)(More Help for Your Nerves)(and more can be found if you google the Author name) about anxiety that helped me gain a much greater understanding about what was going on for me mentally, emotionally and physically. Her books are based toward self help and I have found they have been a great help! I would also like to mention something that helps me when I remember to use it, BUT I would hope people would make sure to look into it and if you are taking another medication, perhaps ask your Dr. It is sold at Chemists, so maybe be able to ask the Pharmacist. 'Bach's Rescue Remedy' is great for panic attacks etc, it acts very much like a sedative, calming but without the side effects which can be nasty. Naturopaths can also make a mix suited to your personal needs after asking you a few questions. It is usually based in alcohol tho so for those who avoid alcohol, you would need to speak to a Naturopath who would make a mix for you using a different baseKisses n hugs... Mrs P
