I think it's to generate an interest in the forces, twelve months in the army and you might just like it, but some see four years as too big a commitment but most would probably end up staying that long anyway But the real reasons for those ads is because the army likes to rub in my face that they didn't want me, geez just because I have an unusual food allergy that might see me end up dying at dinner and they feed a couple hundred people at once and cant risk it blah blah blah....insert foot stomp here.... - Posted from rhpmobile

Personally it'd be great if they made 2yrs straight after school national service compulsory like in other countries. Teaches discipline, respect, appreciation, loyalty and ultimately to value yourself and others as human beings. Also believe it would give kids a broader skills base to pursue trades and technical roles and other career opportunities. Just my random thoughts. - Posted from rhpmobile

I couldn't take orders from my parents, or my Kindy teacher, and I wont from some guy dressed in a suit yelling at me. Not him, not them, not you, well, maybe you, but not them, and definitely not him. Id rather head into the hills and live off tadpoles and pond scum!

I agree with you I_N_D_A_G_I_N_E 100% Don't send them overseas etc...national service right here, straight out of school for everyone. I have a heap of kids and I wouldn't have an issue sending them at all.

Its naïve to think we don't need a defense force and that we will always be safe. Good luck with that kind of thinking. The usa may not always be around to play big brother and im pretty sure the ADF is ranked pretty low globally , something like 23 with Indonesia ranked way ahead at 15 globally .Even Thailand has a better defense force that Australia lol Geez that's a worry.

Defence force are masters of recruiting and doing it professional and advertising well. Interesting take, and will generate a lot of interest. If I was wonder I'd do it. Prospective employers will see that they can work hard and willing to give things a go. Hats off to those that give it a try! - Posted from rhpmobile

BUT in every war we ever fought in in it was us AUSSIE's that got given the shit work and actually got the job done!! Our defense people may not be many but our DIGGER's are effing AWESOME!! In Israel all youth, male and female are conscripted and MUST perform National Service, those fuckers can run I tell ya!! China, Singapore, Asia, we are on the doorstep of the world's largest migratory herd of Muslims as well. (I am not racist or anything either btw) but shouldn't we be encouraging National Service? Have a Irish girlfriend who doesn't like arrogant Poms much (only a select few are arrogant toward the Irish I guess) and she gives 'em hell, some bugger looked down his nose at her and said "My mum and dad taught us how to look under our cars for bombs because of you people." and she just breezily turned around and says "Yaarr my Dad taught me how to make 'em and palce 'em because of people like you." LOL nuff said MAKE LOVE NOT WAR..

There is a HUGE difference between taking gap year's who volunteer to serve and try something new v national service where you are forced to do it. Israel has a history and culture of national service as being surrounded by countries that want to wipe you off the map or history of wanting to exterminate your race will do that to you. Taking someone with the mindset of say unrushed for example and striping down that existing mindset and re-building it in another form of teamwork and respect is not trivial.

No way!!! There are few things I would hate more. Working sucessfully in the defence environment and culture requires certain personality traits and work / life preferences; it is not suited to everyone by any stretch of the imagination. My father had to serve a term of compulsory national service, and he hated it. They let him out early after an illness, which he was very happy about.
