if you are the sort of person who does not like sport of any kind, stop reading now.. if you believe in crying while human endeavour and passion shape the world read on. i've just come down after watching some incredible things on the electronic video equipment up stairs.. and i'm, totally moved. each round of the mototgp (the F1 of motorcycles for those not in the loop) i park my self in front to the tv. surrounded by good company, good food and very good drink. there, my eyes wide, i watch to see my countryman work wonders on his wog masterpiece. oh yes!!! our boy Cassey is world class. but this year he has a battle on his hands... let me explain.. motorcycle racing has a very long, warm and fuzzy history. over time there has been many men that risked breaking them elves on tarmac, concrete and even the occasional lamppost (in the very old days) to follow there passion. many ppl over time have watched this show transfixed, mouth open, eye's watering at the wonderful human endeavour that is the test of who can ride a motorcycle faster. this week end was one of those occasions. for the first 10 Lapps of the french GP, at that great race track "le mans" we saw a wonderful fight. our boy casey (casey stoner) was leading with multi world champions ,valentino rossi, danny pedrosa, collin edwards (world super bike champ) all fighting it out. valentino is not the great rider he is for no reason. after battling hard he gets to the lead and makes a gap (4-5 seconds). leaving the other 3 to fight over the entrails of the monster. at this point jorge lorenzo (call him 'haw-hey') with 2 broken ankles from the race in china manages to join the pack arguing over second place. a few laps from the end stoners bike fails, and my heart sinks. the stars sag on my proverbial aussie flag. but the fight is still on. lorenzo needs to be ported around the pits in a wheel chair. now he is fighting for 2nd spot in illustrious company. with the race nearly over, the couch rises as one and shouts "you've been passed by a bloke in a wheel chair!" (no one here likes danny pedrosa)...... but there is more to come.. this is valentino rossi's 90th victory. a number matched only by 2 other racers in history.. giacomo agostini (yak-oh-mow) and angel nieto (agn-hell). and guess what nieto is at the track. leathers and a helmet on ready to ride rossi's bike around the track , with rossi on the back with a flag. the flag says "90+90". the general an i sat on the couch and said "how cool is that??" it was great... ZZ i hope you were watching mate.. if you are not in to sport, motorcycle racing is a very good place to start. it is often quite close, exciting and the races are only 40 minutes long... and it has history and passion.. a bit like sex.. Recently I caught the last part of a weekend sports broadcast showing a triathlon from Port Macquarie. Not any triathlon, mind you, but an Ironman triathlon. If you're not familar with Ironmen triathlons, that's where the running leg *alone* is the length of an olympic marathon. They showed a number of people as they crossed the finish line. Now bear in mind that the race record, the fastest time by the most elite competitor, is over eight, count 'em, eight hours. So there were people who had stretched the limits of their physical and mental endurance crossing the line after 10 hours, 14 hours, up to almost 17 hours. There were competitors who had recovered from cancer, who were putting themselves through the event in support of a cause, someone who a year before had been grossly overweight and needed to change his life, fathers, mothers, even pensioners. And I sat there with tears running down my face watching these people cross the line after achieving something few mortals will ever achieve, who can look back on their life in later years and say "that day, I was an Ironman." Anyone who ever needs motivation to do anything should just watch one of these.
