Quoting 'SoftandCurious' Mackay to Bundaberg today. 623km in strong wind, flash flooding and torrential rain with two bored children. Maccas don't make coffees large enough for this!!! My family used to take lots of long road trips on holidays when my brother and I were kids. (Family scattered all over the country). To keep us occupied, my parents stocked up on music, puzzle (and other) books, pencils and textas. We'd draw pictures and write messages for other traffic on the road and were able to draw on the side windows (and while this was in the days before whiteboards, we could easily dry erase our textas and/or chinagraphs). We also used the window to track scores for 'number plate cricket'. There's a little over five years between my brother and me, and we did still niggle each other and wrangle. We scarcely got through a trip without parental threats to "bang (y)our bloody heads together", or be let out to find our own way (which never would have actually occurred). All good fun in hindsight, and I still love a good road trip.

Melbourne is heating up. On Wednesday night, spent quality time with my sexy fwb. Took our cold beers and antipasto to my local beach. Great sexy night and.cool breeze certainly gets one frisky. Leaving close to the beach has its advantages. I went out on drinks with a hot guy last night by a river bar. Hot day, hot guy, hot body, hot date. my week, no year has gone off with a bang. can't wait for a meet up next week.

Nice to have a pool. My boy and I will hit up our local beach for the night n swim. Drink (beer champagne, iced water and coke for him). Picnic - cooking the satay beef, sesame beef balls with housing dip, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, dollars, crackers.and watermelon 🍉 and strawberries. We're planning to stay there as long as we can to beat the heat. Add to top up the tan. Have a great weekend! 🍻

A few thousand kilometres done. Caravans, sugar cane, cows, country towns and a few hilarious CB radio comments. One case of heat stroke (daughter) while in Townsville. I must say apart from a few moody moments and the question "What's that noise Mum?" Repeated a few hundred times by my toddler - every time the road was rough, they were pretty wonderful travelling companions. Two weeks flew by!!! Next road trip looks like the Blue Mountains! ...and had a good chat with the driver on the taxi industry in Perth as I'd noted the huge lines of waiting taxis at the airport with few jobs.I thought, maybe, the downturn was a a result of the mining industry cutting back...but no, he said, it's because of the boom in Uber over here...and none of the taxi drivers feel it's fair competition. He told me, there are 11000 registered Uber drivers in Perth and about 6000 of them are active.I've never used the service, but Uber is much cheaper for the customer( except on public holidays )...25% of every fare going to Uber the company, in the US. Out of the country. The cost of rego, licensing and insurance is over $40000 a year for a taxi driver...Uber drivers pay none of that, they only submit to a roadworthy inspection at the start.Bi-annually, taxi drivers are required to attend a refresher course...usually attended by the WA police. The police used to tell them that "it is illegal for anyone to commercially take passengers from point A to point B without the appropriate licensing and insurance." So what's changed? It's no surprise the taxi drivers feel this is unfair competition, and many wonder if Uber, the company, paid a lot of money to certain people or organisations to get a place in the Australian market. Uber drivers don't use it as a full-time occupation usually, the fares are too cheap, so it's a supplementary income...and, to me, it sounds like this one-sided competition will kill off taxi driving as a full-time job for many in the industry. I use taxis to the airport once or twice a fortnight and I usually call one driver that I've known for over 6 years. He's a good man, with a family, and I'm happy to throw some work his way. I feel for the taxi drivers. Uber is competition that doesn't have to play by the same rules.

Due respect, but I think you're a little bit green or new with your opinion or knowledge about ubers. I do agree it will most definitely kill the normal taxi industry in time so hard for the regular taxi license owners, in time they will all be gone or most will, but how is criticising and resisting going to help? All very noble that you catch normal taxis but if a service is better for the customer, why wouldn't they use that one? It's a major shift in the taxi industry, granted, but not a bad one for the customer. All the people I know only use ubers, have been for a long time, in private circles, you never hear the word taxi anymore. You can, if available, request the same driver, can be like ringing a friend to come and pick you up, just not your 'best' friend because they wouldn't charge lol but so many more benefits I won't go into, because I believe that is the major one, getting in a car with someone you like and trust, people find them a lot more relaxed. I don't know about anyone else, but I've felt uncomfortable getting into s normal taxi, even as a child, I can remember feeling tense, the driver's were always arrogant. They were arrogant because they were ripping you off the second you got in the car, they have traditionally and arrogantly ripped as much money as they could, out of the standard citizen who just needed to go from A to B for whatever reason, but think of all the elderly or sick people needing to go to and from hospital, just an example, happy to prey on those people. So I'm sorry, but I won't be breaking out the tissues. This has been happening for a long time now, it's not new. But it's simple economics, the customer will choose Uber for the superior service. And who was paying for your ride, your company or you? Private customers will opt for the cheaper friendlier service. Bit like the whole chain store vs the corner shop. Sorry, this is harsher than I wanted it to sound, but just woken up and posting before coffee, NOW there will be panic in the streets 😱 sometimes it's just easier, rather than edit, post the comment, go get the coffee, then come back and apologise lol okay that's just me right? 😊

You said he had a family, don't we all? Don't Uber drivers have families to feed and bills to pay. Your comment came across to me as snobbish in one respect, because you probably have a high paying job where the company is paying, not you, so easy to be noble when you're in that situation. The people really struggling to feed their families probably wouldn't be catching taxi's/Ubers at all, or are driving Ubers and getting paid less, so the noble overtone, don't really buy that, sorry

...thanks, but the feeling behind my comment has been missed. Of course, Uber is a more cost effective service for the customer...that's not in dispute...and if one only thinks of the benefits to themselves as the customer, then Uber is a welcome competitor to the taxi companies. No, what I'm getting at is : why is Uber allowed to operate in this country, offering all the same service as a taxi company, but it's operators/drivers are not required to abide by the same regulatory fees and safety rules ? Uber is in court in Europe at the moment because it's arguing that it's "a digital platform that connects willing drivers with customers, not a transport service" and therefore is exempt from the said fees and rules. It's "not a transport service?" Am I missing something here? Uber started in the US; and on the one hand, Europe is trying to protect it's labor markets and on the other it's governments are trying not to be "antisocial" to tech-enabled( read: using Apps.. ) business models. Australia, naturally, will face the same issues as Europe. And many people may lose jobs. Uber isn't a full-time job. Taxi driving is. And may not be for long. And not that it's relevant, but I'm not in a high paying job...I just work 80 plus hours a week when I do work.

I understand what you are saying. But for me, the friendliness of the drivers and cheaper fares means Ill be using Uber. I have a teenage son and work hard to make ends meet. He is going to see his father who lives out of the country. A taxi to the airport will cost around fifty dollars. An Uber, 25. A lot of us are not financially well off and therefore have to make choices that suit us.

At different times I've been a fairly regular user of Taxis for work related rides to the Airport, and privately too. Whilst taxi rides are not cheap, it is worth noting Taxi Drivers are not highly paid. Their shifts are typically twelve hours, and many work six days per week. A while back I read a range of articles on Uber. These demonstarted Uber drivers actually make very little money for their own efforts too, but they do take on most all of the operating expenses and other liabilities associated with their endeavour. If those considering (or already undertaking) a position driving for Uber were to carefully consider the financials, they likely would not do it. In many cases, I think these people may have either tumbled for marketing hype, or have engaged to pass their time and get some social contact in a hobby-like capacity. I also think it is worthwhile to consider the broader economic impacts of undermining a legitimate local income earning industry whilst effectively funneling funds spent to an overseas operator. I'll be interested to research something more of Uber's company structure to ascertain the likely tax and other fees Uber will be required to pay in to the Australian economy...

Yes, it was pre my morning coffee 😀😉 and didn't mean it to sound so harsh. There is much you're missing though. Ontology articulated his comment much better than I did 👍 So some points of interest perhaps, are that as Ontology pointed out, if any Uber driver did the sums properly, they wouldn't do it. How do I know this? Because I did the sums and it was equal to paying a lot of money to get a job with poverty level pay. Cars have to be after 2008 model I think? Something like that, so in my case, I was looking at doing it just to supplement income, to help pay bills, but regardless whether full time or part time, my car just missed the cut off year, but has low kms, is super reliable, and will do me for a number of years yet. But to update, it would have cost me minimum $8000? Do you see the problem? And that doesn't include running expenses, special license extension costs, medicals etc etc. So even if a married person did it with a family car they already own, that capital outlay is still there. A huge amount to get a job, and could possibly be there undoing in the future. If the regular taxi drivers hang in there, it might do full circle and Uber won't be able to con people into driving for them. I do agree there that their ability to get drivers with that personal outlay on the line, was clever marketing. In relation to safety, the cars have to have a roadworthy test and look presentable, 4 door etc., there are strict guidelines, the drivers I think then get rated, a star rating kind of system, so the more good feedback they get, the more trips they get, and an incentive to be friendly, polite and professional. Customers can request male or female driver etc I don't think safety is an issue, but that's only just from talking to people about their experiences. So I'm sure I will have missed key points, but importantly, no money to be made doing it IMHO respect your opinion too of course and ompletely get the massive hours for pay, that you do, so often overlooked, and I should know better than to say that, well familiar that 😃
