I've seen Apocalypto many times over the years and I still enjoy it from time to time. I've never considered it a horror movie...more a brutally realistic historical...and I don't "enjoy" its brutal realism, as such..but I am fascinated by the telling of it.Life lived at ground level...the average persons...in such times and places would've been hard, brutal and dangerous outside of the shelter of the tribes. And even then, there were always bigger and badder tribes ready to consume the smaller ones for their resources, to fuel their own societies. Human slaves being the greatest resource everywhere in the world.Just as what happens in the movie. I think the movie as a whole is something of a reflection on the "evils" of civilisation and the constant quest for it by all societies in time.I don't think it represents Christians as saviours at all. The sight of the Spanish galleons at the closing scenes, to me, is representative of a new struggle to come for Jaguar Paw and his family, with the arrival of another brutal, dominant civilisation to "consume" the Maya/Inca one for their resources....slaves and gold. Of course, only the viewer knows this. Jaguar Paw and his family have grown with a very sheltered view of the bigger world.

To add...even the name suggests that it is the end of the world for Jaguar Paws' people. At least, as he knows it. Just as it was the end for the Maya/Inca....thier society corrupt and decaying...that being reflected in the plagues and blights wasting their crops. While hints are dropped that the cunning, ruling elite are using religion to control the masses...ie. through the predicted solar eclipse. I still think it's quite a clever film, with several levels to it.

Yeah definitely not a horror. What I loved about it is how well every aspect of the movie was put together. The acting, the scenery, the music, and how deep you as the viewer get sucked into it and cheer for the underdog. It's not very often I watch a movie and walk away feeling like I've experienced something incredible. This brings up a question and its not specific to the horror genre. What movies have you watched that left a lasting impression? I don't mean a film that you thought was good. I mean one that you watched and were so blown away that you felt compelled to tell everyone you know about it to the point of being annoying! There aren't many for me but there are a few. Peony. With Jane Doe I was thinking about it and I don't know how they could have written it without giving away the obvious plot early on. I knew almost straight away but it didnt ruin it for me. I was just keen to see what she was going to do next! - Posted from rhpmobile

As far as just the visuals go...but not the plot, as it was pretty generic...Avatar is one of the most impressively rendered films I've seen.I don't like heights at all...I get a feeling of butterflies in the pit of my stomach and my legs feel wobbly when I stand near a cliff edge, for example.Avatar's the only film I've seen that can generate those feelings of fear in me...that can trick my brain and body...even on a 42' TV screen. In 3D at the cinemas, it was at its most impressive.

Movies like The Shawshank Redemption. No special effects required, great actors, humor mixed in at the right times when it gets dark, and a terrific story with an awesome ending. And anyone who didn't tear up when Brooksy did what he did has a cold heart! (Trying not to give away too much) It's another one of those movies I wish I could watch again for the first time - Posted from rhpmobile

Made my kids watch it with me a few months ago. They loved it. We all cried. Also love Shawshank, its an amazing movie perfectly casted. Stephen King books made into moves can be hit or miss hey.Stand By Me of course love it.Also liked Big Driver but the short story was better. But pretty good adaptionMisery yes, how psychotic was Kathy Bates. The Stand is my favourite book of his and I do like the movie as well. It was a bit dodgy but still a great story. But couldn't match up to the intricate story of the novel. I feel compelled now to go and watch all the Stephen King movies. Whats shouldn't I watch LOL. I haven't seen any of the newer ones. We tried to watch Under The Dome but I have a short attention span now with movies. I couldn't stick it out. Actually I barely watch any now, I get bored and turn them off.

...the one that terrified me most "The Tax Men Cometh". I get to file an ATO return here under the dual tax treaty then have the privilege of filing with the IRS in the USA. What? My spoodle is a guard dog and looks after all my business records at home. Surely I can deduct the food, grooming and obedience school costs as business expenses? Fuck...here we go again! I end up in a Club Fed prison with Martha Stewart! 😱😱😱 - Posted from rhpmobile

I've been wondering about Big Driver. It looks good but I've always put it in the one day list. I liked Maximum Overdrive but it was a long time ago and I was a huge ACDC fan back then. I don't know if I would enjoy it as much as an adult. I loved Needful Things the book but haven't seen the movie. The beginning of The Stand terrified me as a kid because as previously mentioned by others, things that are possible are scarier than fiction. I found the rest of the movie painful to watch due to the length but I made it through the whole series in one sitting. The Green Mile was great and yes it was impossible not to 'have something in your eye' when JC gets executed. - Posted from rhpmobile

Only addition I may add is perhaps not quite a horror, but right up my alley, an older movie called "Man's Best Friend", 1993, Lance Henriksen. Perhaps a little B-Grade, but among other things the opening intro/credit scene and opening score was of interest. According to IMDB, Lance was nominated in this for Best Actor in the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards which is for horror movies. Kind of far fetched (but what isn't), and if you're a fan of cats maybe not the best movie to watch in regards to one scene... :P

They are just the movies I have but I don't recommend them all. Air was okay as a time killer but not much more. It has Norman Reedus from the walking dead in it. Post apocalyptic movie about a few remaining people in a bunker that start to fight with each other. - Posted from rhpmobile

Alien Covenant wasn't bad, as sci-fi scary films go.It didn't seem to critically review well...I'm not sure why...as it followed exactly the same premise as the original Alien.Maybe that's why. But, I enjoy the revelations of these prequel Alien movies...as it's a series concept that grips me.

could not make a film like that, about corrupt Aboriginals, who were saved from their uncivilised ways, so he opted to make one about those on another continent. Luckily I see beyond the smoked mirrors. I am not very fond of horror movies, but loved the The Tunnel (not sure if it's the same some have mentioned) and French horror Beyond the Wall. Both great. I usually Love South Korean and Japanese horrors (Ms)

I don't know if Air is worth buying on dvd. It's not a bad movie at all but it's not overly memorable either. What was the Korean movie you watched? Does anyone watch The Last Man On Earth? It's a TV series that you either love or you hate because the main character makes you cringe every time he opens his mouth. (Will Forte - Macgruber) It's stupid humour with a very dark storyline. If you are in need of a laugh and find stupid humour entertaining, watch Macgruber as well. The celery scene kills me everytime - Posted from rhpmobile

I only recall lots of running and screaming, lots of zombies, and lots of boobies. 🤣 I was thinking that there must be a burgeoning Breast Augmentation industry in that part of the world! 😜 (It is an industry that's growing.) Zombies and boobies, they make great movies Screaming and killing and jumping over bodies The spirits are a-soaring Body count is arising What better way to spend nights with no warm body? 🤣😁

I think we should expect a Prequel or a Sequel in the near future. 😛 A "Jane Doe: Salem's Stake". 😛 Something like that. I've watched it twice now. Here's a boo-boo: Her irises turned brown at the death of the forensic pathologist. But in the police van where she's being transported to another place, her eyes were back to cloudy gray. Hmm... 🤔

I don't remember I Spit On Your Grave being particularly funny. A woman being raped and tortured and getting revenge. I think you might be thinking of another movie. @Peony It's at the beginning when the woman bites the big guys dick off and he fumbles around with it like a hot potato 🤣 A Jane Doe prequel would be great as long as they don't rush it out as a cash grab. Are you referring to The Witch where the family gets banished from the village and the witch takes the baby? I know I have grave encounters but cant find it! I have seen it though. Thats the found footage film in the psychiatric hospital if I remember correctly. I keep seeing VHS on Netflix. I suppose I'll have to watch it huh?! I'll have to watch Bone Tomahawk first now that ASF has peaked my interest! - Posted from rhpmobile

The director of Bone Tomahawk has said that he very much sticks to traditional special effects rather than CGI. As good as CGI is these days it's still fairly obvious when it's being used and it just never looks totally real. When violent / gory scenes are filmed using effective traditional effects they can seem much more realistic which is one reason why I think the scene in Bone Tomahawk shocked a lot of people.

I always had a sick stomach after having watched those movies 🤢🤮 - Posted from rhpmobile I don't do movies like the Saw, Hostel, Wrong Turn franchises etc. I just see those as pure torture porn, a lot of graphic gore and violence just for the sake of it without any real substance or story. Even though a movie like Bone Tomahawk has some very graphic violence, it's also actually a very well done film with an interesting story, engaging characters, great cinematography, and good dialogue (IMO anyway). The first two-thirds of the film has hardly any gore, it's only in the last act that it really ramps up, and the violence isn't there just for the sake of it - it does fit in with the story and does serve an actual purpose. That's the difference for me in whether I can enjoy a violent / gory film.

Pans Labyrinth was an incredible movie. It's like the adult fantasy/ horror version of Alice In Wonderland only her mother is dying, her father is a Nazi and the creatures are slightly more twisted than the rabbit. You are right, the creature with the eyes in its hands is really freaky and imaginative. SG. Sorry you can't watch The Thing. I can't really think of a solution for you. I don't know if yippy can watch SBS Viceland on your tablet or phone. I grew up watching horror and gore so it doesnt really phase me. When I see humans being killed I think more about how well done the special effects are than how disturbing a scene is because I know its just a movie. Animals being hurt on the other hand I find far more difficult to tolerate. Me thinks I've got my priorities a bit it out of wack! - Posted from rhpmobile

Both parts of your comment on “yippy” and “I’ve got my priorities a bit out of work” are so funny 😂😂 each to their own sir, each to their own 🤪🤪 I know the gore in those horror movies are man made special efforts, not real, but the special effects are too close to be real, and the fact that human torturing does happen in real life, watching such scenes aren’t pleasant to my stomach 🤢🤮 Therefore, my reason to opt for horror movies like The Grudge, The Conjuring, etc. at least I know what to do to protect myself from the paranormal attack, but don’t know how to escape if I was captured by a torturing psychopath! And that not knowing “how to” scares me! Touch wood touch wood touch wood! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 - Posted from rhpmobile

I saw a prequel to The Exorcist once, and I remember I quite enjoyed it, too.I like the type of horror in the Exorcist movies because they don't rely on gore or gratuitous disembowelling of innocents. It's the unknown that's fascinating....the demon, or what it is. I watched the new version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre once, and it disturbed me. That some characters are based on real people. That there are people like that out there.

Exorcism movies can be so spooky! I don't own any atm because of a Church-inculcated thang about owning nothing pertaining to the Devil at home. 😛 That might change in future! 😛 My favorite retort to my churchy friends was always, "If you don't know how the Devil operates, how the hell are we going to deal with him?!" 🤔😁 Anyway, exorcism movies can strike fear and terror in my heart, especially since most of the movies are based on real events! 😨😱

Love this movie for its pared-down subtlety. The horror in this movie never truly comes at you like a freight truck. It's a rather gentle build-up of suspense that culminates in a final scene where the Devil's presence is unmistakably revealed. The ominous yet mesmerising chanting reverberated in my head and the ending so enraptured me that I found myself replaying the iconic last scene again and again. The movie also illustrated how some "good", ordinary folks get shoved onto this path - not by choice, but by circumstances. Eerie, bizarre, spooky!

I kinda switch off when I watch senseless violence. I often scrutinise the scenes for the special efx and makeup, gauging how realistic they are. 😛 These days, perhaps due to Meditation, I find myself not wanting to stomach senseless violence and bloodshed. I mentioned before that the more realistic movies like Wolf Creek I & II, The Hills Have Eyes, I Spit On Your Grave, etc. bring a spine-tingling chill and I can literally feel the blood drain from my face and my extremities grow icy cold from the sheer terror and extreme fear they illicit. These movies depict scenarios that can actually happen IRL! That seriously freaks me out! 😨😨😨

Knock Knock, with Keanu Reeves, is disturbing. Makes you think thrice about letting sexy strangers into one's home! The Purge series is also frightening because who knows... the concept might just become real someday when overpopulation and massive economic strains on resources and welfare force gifts to make draconian measures! 😨 It's not that impossible, when one contemplates. 😟😦😵

Quoting 'Koolgrey' That some characters are based on real people. That there are people like that out there. This is why I found Snowtown so hard to watch. The part where he lures his stepbrother to his death. So disturbing. My favourite not horror but still horrific because of the drug situation in Mexico/US is No Country For Old Men. Javier Bardem plays the best psycho. I love that movie. Also Winters Bone with Jennifer Lawrences. Really captures the darkness of drugs/meth/culture. I like movies with dark themes.

I know what you mean about wanting someone to share your travels( adventures..? ) with.....I'm no different. A while ago, I decided to just do these things.Plan them carefully( that's half the fun ) and execute them. Besides, the months of planning and saving gives friends who want to come along time to get their shit together if they're serious. And since this is about movies...it's like when I first watched Prometheus, and I marvelled at the amazing waterfall scene in the beginning...where the Engineer devolves himself into it, supposedly sparking the first life on Earth, I think. That's a real Fall that, called Dettifoss...in Northern Iceland. A few hours drive from the town of Akureyri, past a shallow lake called Myvatn( where they filmed some GoT.. ), then a walk over a moon-like landscape to this wide, thundering wall of water that tears a canyon through this rocky, barren plain. Quite surreal. Same as when I watched a favourite film of mine, Secret Life of Walter Mitty...and Walter the eternal dreamer( Is that me, perhaps..? ) imagines himself as the exotic arctic adventurer on the magazine cover, rough and grizzled with icicles in his beard as the snow falls gently around him.Did that too( as best I could.. ). I even grew a bit of facial fuzz for the occasion. So far, no friend who's been keen has joined me on an adventure. But, I try to live my dreams if I can.

Every woman swoons. I’m picturing you on a mountaintop moodily gazing into the distance AKA Aragorn in Lord Of The Rings 😍 - Posted from rhpmobile

On Netflix. I'm only up to episode 3 but it has me sucked in so far. True Detective - Only seen series 1 though.

From Dusk Till Dawn by Quentin Tarantino... It's shocking, shocking, shocking... and then when you think you know what sort of movie it's going to be, it changes entirely... No spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it... I'm not a huge horror fan and the too close to real life scenarios are a no no. I saw the original Chainsaw Massacre and still have the scene where one of the women was hung from a huge hook on the door which pierced through her back. I feel sick remembering it. The "Hills Have Eyes" is Out, I have flashbacks from that too, several. "Saw", just no, never took a chance. I do like intrigue and suspense... Cheers

Ooh! True Detective Series 1 & 2 are awesome! 👍 Tell you what's better - The Tunnel Series 1 & 2. The Tunnel refers to the Channel Tunnel aka Chunnel. Series 1 starts with a dead body placed right in the middle. So, half the body was in the UK, 1/2 in France! Wormwood is good!

I liked the idea that the sister can control the zombies. In concept, she’s a bit like Alice in the Resident Evil movies, a successful genetically modified weapon. - Posted from rhpmobile

I'm a big fan of simple, uplifting movies like Walter Mitty. And others like Invictus, Local Hero, The Martian, Apollo 13, Priscilla, Rocky 1 & 2. They so have a place on my bookshelf...for when I fell like a quick shot of inspiration or feel-good.

Walter Mitty is simply beautiful in so many ways and a freakin' sweet soundtrack. PP cannot put a vote in for True Detective 2nd series, sorry thought it was shite (just let me down) but holy crap wow must see the first if you don't mind dealing with certain topics. Strongly advise reading what it is about as it crosses many boundaries but damn is that not one of the best series to ever come out. Wyrmwood pisscutter of an Aussie flick and so glad a lovely forumite recommended that to me last time I was here.

Apologies SA 😜 But I enjoyed watching Changeling and Shutter Island, even though I am not a fan of watching dramas :) I especially liked the twist at the end in Shutter Island, and Angelina Jolie did a good job on her character 👍🏼 - Posted from rhpmobile
