Music to stalk by

August 23 2017

As well as love and all that sweet and gooey stuff, another theme that seems to have been a popular inspiration for a lot of songs over the years involves exploration of the darker side of love and longing...the one-sided, obsessive, frustrated, jealous, unrequited feelings, and even stalker-type behaviour. A lot of these songs can sound pretty innocent at first listen, but when you start to pay attention to the lyrics you realise that there's something just a little off and not quite right. 'Every Breath You Take' by The Police is a classic example, it was often mistaken for a sweet love song and even played at weddings, but Sting himself pointed out that it's actually about obsession and jealousy over a lost love, and not really an appropriate wedding song! What 'stalker' songs do you know? I'll start off with a couple other favourites of mine... #1 Crush by Garbage (the Nellee Hooper mix in particular), and Coma by Max Sharam. Please note - I'm not in any way condoning stalker-type behaviour here and the topic title is tongue-in-cheek. This is a topic purely about songs that are based on those themes, because those themes have been an inspiration for a lot of music - and often very good music when you consider the songs on the basis of their artistic merit alone.

Wow, now I think about it so many songs have this vibe to them. One that comes to mind is Neil Diamond's "Girl, you'll be a woman soon", maybe not so 'stalkerish' but definitely has that creeper feel to it. "Don't you know, girl, you'll be a woman soon Please, come take my hand Girl, you'll be a woman soon Soon, you'll need a man." Second creepy song that comes to mind with more of a jaded ex-lover feel to it would be The Human League's "Don't you want me baby" Thought provoking topic LD 👍 - Posted from rhpmobile

Always - Bon Jovi Notably the following verse, I'll be there Till the stars don't shine Till the heavens burst And the words don't rhyme "It's a sick little twisted lyric," Jon Bon Jovi explained. "So many people feel it's so romantic and so wonderful, but truthfully, this guy is practically a stalker. He's a sick human being." - Posted from rhpmobile
