I have no car. Don't really want a car. Can't afford a car. See through people who wear a car like jewellery (the men with small feet ). I walk just about everywhere. Take my time. Happy to be out of step. BUT if had money and could indulge a dream i had as a teenager. I'd get one of those old Maserati Sebrings from the 60's. In silver!!!!! YEAH!!!! Then I'll be.....................................meh.

firstly - if someone complained my choice in cars was ecologically unsound while they drive an Xtrail I'd feel justified in asking them why they're a hypocrite. I have 2 cars, one is a sports car - I barely drive it - maybe 10km last year - but I love having it there in the garage, I get an "oooh isn't that good looking" feeling whenever it catches my eye. The other is comfortable and gets me from A to B, it is nice but isn't particularly flashy. As if people don't 'judge' others for their car or other things - you meet some fellow in his well tailored suit, Breitling watch and cufflinks just so... but at the end of the night he's hopping into his mashed up 1980's Ford Festiva - 'judge' is probably the wrong word - but I doubt anyone wouldn't have a moment of surprise because the two images don't line up. People have different interests and tastes, some like to spend money on cars, you spend on holidays. Given how much time we often spend stuck inside our cars, I can see the sense in getting something you enjoy being in. 1. if it is a distinctive car it can provide insight into the person driving it.2. if it's a Robin Reliant then I know they've lied about their age before the door opens ;) but no

Cars to a degree can show you something about the owners. I find it more defining to hear about the type of cars people would like to have.

Less stressful. I only use the cars when I need it to transport items over or occasionally drive my kids to sports places and their mate where public transport may be a logistical nightmare. When I travel interstate or overseas, I try to book hotells close to work, walking distance, so as not to add anymore onto the noise and carbon footprint. Public transport all the way for me and some of my friends think that is crazy to be dependent on trains/trams/buses. I like it like that - less stressful, cheaper and ecologically sound. Just need to be more patient. Are you calling me a hypocrite? Strong words when you dont know anything about me. more about you than me? A bit rich? But the more important question is.... What the hell are these 'Breitling watch and cufflinks'? Never heard of them.

We also have kept the old family wagon for our son, learner's this year.... Exciting and daunting all at once.... I'm with you on this Lily...like to spend money on holidays and adventures On the other hand my rig is otherwise known as Queen of the Road.... Patrol... Have always wanted one, to take the tribe further than before....it's my newest baby and we plan to hit the sand at the end of the year ... With regards to what other people drive, we tend to meet our playmates on foot in a neutral setting..... Easier to lose in a crowded mall if they're a little scary 😜

and I don't see anything wrong with that. I love the beauty of the external sleek design too. Yes, you can tell a lot about people by the cars they drive. We are all different so why shouldn't we drive cars that reflect who we are. Lily... you are a practical sounding person and you drive cars that suit that side of your personality. Other sides of your personality may be reflected in other things you do, what you wear and lifestyle choices. At the end of the day a car is a car ... it is only a small reflection of the person that drives it. I drive a Mazda 3 Sport Maxx .... I love the shape of it, the colour, all the features and it has a Satellite Navigation which is essential for my work. If given the option to trade it for a BMW or Audi A6 I would probably say.. "hell yeah" ... but at the same time I'm also happy with my Mazda. I dated a man who frequently bragged about his cars, houses, intelligence and wealth. To me those things weren't important and he couldn't understand why. I enjoyed the beauty of his luxurious lifestyle but did it make him a beautiful person? ... no quite the opposite. I hope I answered your question. LG

Quoting 'Smilingwithfun' Cars to a degree can show you something about the owners. I find it more defining to hear about the type of cars people would like to have. I'd be happy to drive a solar powered car if there ever was one that would run efficiently and is mass marketed. Can't wait for that day when the emissions are minimized greatly from current levels. Not an extreme environmental activist but where and when I can, I will try to do my bit for the environment. still public transport for me all the way.

Quoting 'S_OnTheLoose' firstly - if someone complained my choice in cars was ecologically unsound while they drive an Xtrail I'd feel justified in asking them why they're a hypocrite. xtrail = 7.1 l per 100km of city driving Lambo Gallardo = 20.1 l per 100 km of city driving I've never bought myself a car so the makes/models probably say nothing about me. However i have inherited 4 cars from family members in my life (including my current ride) and that probably does say something about me. If i had the means I'd have a manual VW Golf GTI. I like hot hatches, because you don't have to go fast to get that driving on the edge feel. Straight line speed means nothing to me.

define me. I have always had the view that people who do that are as shallow as they are. Please world... Please let the human race wake up to the real meaning of life. This planet, with the other creatures and plant life and the possibilities of what humans can share with each other are what is, has been and always will be what really matters in the end. If we continue to let material things like a stupid car define us then I think this poor planet is going to rebel big time.... Err lol my serious two cents worth. - Posted from rhpmobile

a passion for some people. For some its to show there wealth, some pride especially if they have done one up. For me its about reliability and fuel consumption. If I had lots of money Id probably own at least three cars I think. I grew up in a family that spent alot of time in motorsport. Each to there own as long as the driver isnt an arsehole.

Funny innit'. .I'm not fancy but I'm cheap. I loved my LJ Torana, but the look on the woman's face the day we moved into her rental was priceless. .Now we have a 'luxury' AWD, but only got that because of a payout in the last few years. I always feel like I need to explain that... But never felt like I needed to explain my 6 cyl baby to anyone. :-P... it worked LOL. .I got it on with he who matters most in that Torana. And he drove me to the hospital with me leaning across from the back seat to change gears because he'd only gotten his license 4 days before and my car was 3 on the tree when I was having our baby. Zippy, gutsy lil' car. Just like me. Peachy

As for others, I don't care what they drive, but it does matter to me how they act/talk about it. People bragging about their car, or looking down on others for their (lack of) vehicle are not for me. I've somehow always found myself in relationships with guys who owned old cars, and who made clear they would rather use their money for better things than anything material. My ex drove a Ford Festiva that was about 15 years old, and it was a great car (the dogs loved it too). My own last car was a little red Honda called Marilyn.

You've found an old Mustang wreck in a yard somewhere, and spent lots of cash and years of your time doing it up to the point of entering it into the Summernats, then I think it's just a 'look how much money I have' thing. I've driven cars I can afford to have except post divorce, when I realised I'd never had a new car before. Blue Colorado 4wd it was. Before that: 1971 Cortina, three on the tree; Another Cortina with a bullet hole in the drivers' door (not my doing!); XD Falcon wagon (drove from Townsville to Victoria without missing a beat); Mini Moke - ideal for poaching yabbies from neighbours' dams; LPG Falcon sedan; and Rodeo 2wd, aluminium tray. Excellent for throwing broken concrete into. Cars as status symbols just mark you as a wanker, I reckon. What you drive doesn't define you as a person, nor is it an indicator of your success in your chosen field of endeavour. - Posted from rhpmobile

One was three foot up and wrapped around a telegraph pole, side wall closed up the floor and broke her ankle Another, off the road, over a rock that turned the car over tip for tail, leaving some of the tail lights about 6 metres up on the branch of a tree, car on it's roof The head on with a truck on the bridge was just bad luck, police were behind her when that happened, not her fault. 4x4 Nissan patrol just tipped over on the dirt track, every window and panel destroyed, broke the steering column and they are strong. The rest are too frightening. Love can hurt that's for sure.

Waiting for a lift from my dad in his gold mitsi 380. Gold mitsi 380 pulls up at the curb right in front of me and i jump straight into the back seat (didn't bother to think 'who's that in the passenger seat') and 2 young asian women turn around and start screaming and swatting at me. I was laughing so hard i couldn't work the door handle properly and literally fell out onto the pavement when i finally did. No idea what they thought was going on, but they only moved up a few parking spots before the passenger got out and the driver drove off, so they couldn't have been that put out. If i could I would also have more than one car. My VW Golf GTI for a daily drive, fuel economy (good while still being a performance car) and handling as well as being fun to drive. And some form of 5 cab 4wd ute with a canopy for the weekends away or when i need to move some furniture or something. Anything else i would hire for the period i need instead. Now both of those would be quite expensive, but for me its all about how it drives (Golf) or how useful it is (Ute).

Its not flash, and not even new or close to new (13 years old). I love it for the freedom it gives me. I didn't get my license until I was 31 and since getting it, I hate being without a car. I enjoy knowing if I am somewhere and not having a good time I can go and get in my car and leave. If I want to explore, I can. My car has done lots of kilometres and the biggest trip was from Hobart to Darwin. For a gypsy, its freedom of movement that is important, and the car is quicker than horse and cart. Admittedly if I had the money I would trade it in on a 4 wheel drive as that would give me access to more beautiful places. As for people who are status driven, I am too fat and old to be a status symbol so no-one looking for status would ever date me. And for that I am profoundly grateful as I prefer people who enjoy the simple things in life and who invest their surplus cash in caring for global issues and making other people happy.

Hey Lily, maybe you could explain all this to my wife for me lol I too believe that sometimes a car suggests something about an individual; many terms and conditions apply. I do love all sorts of cars, but more to look at and historically appreciate than to drive or show off with. My daily is a very ordinary car which the wife chose as I couldn't care less what I drive (I really only like it for the media system tbh); happy wife happy life is the motto I live by. Mine might be somewhat unkempt until there is a possibility of someone else being in it, in which case it's clean and tidy :) Just like the house. But in my case, having a shedding dog (car and house) makes that next to impossible short of a good and full vacuum immediately before a visitor arrives/travels. I was at the meet & greet, did you get that impression?

After the OP's well defined explanation of her question, it all boils down to her question of if you make a judgement about a person because of the car they car (and why ?). As with many questions that have been put forward in the forums over time, we will all see this from various perspectives because we all have differing values in life. As a number have made mention of, they also look at other factors other than the type of car driven, such as condition or purpose. For those of us who actually have some reasonable knowledge of cars we would probably say yes, a car can say something about the person driving it, whilst others will note that it is merely a means of getting from one place to another regardless. If you don't know the person driving it, looking at their car can give you some clues about them. But on the other hand, if you do know the person you can see if it is a practical vehicle for their lifestyle, or if they see it as a status symbol of sorts. I like the comments made by the few of you about the good ol' LJ's. I learnt to drive in one - it was a school car in which the students were taught by the teachers who had undergone advanced driver training courses. It was the "Strike Me Pink " colour with a four on the floor, 3300 engine. Teachers loved it too. Was a fantastic car to run around in. My own first car was a new 1977 Toyota Celica coupe - brilliant orange colour with a 5 speed. As I was still at home then and single it was the perfect car just for me, and sometimes the occasional company. Had it 'til I got married, than mainly had a succession of family hatchback vehicles. Just love the practicality of hatchbacks. Just recently had my poor ol' Laser hatch of 23 years written off with only 123k kms and very well maintained. Just got my hands on a 2011 Mondeo hatch. Tall

I don't spend heaps of money on shoes, magazines etc so I invest in a good car that will get me around WA and across the Nullabor.....my current one bought in May 2014 is a black VE Commadore that I love driving, hoping to upgrade it next year when I turn 60!!!!!

Quoting 'laugh_anytime' Wowww what s load of crystal ball crap. Ones car might be something used for work purposes so how can that define an attitude or characteristic Does owning a Garley make one a Drug dealing underworld figure hmmm. Treat people as individuals not as predetermined stereotypes of some fictional TV character. Didn't get Campbell Newman too far did it ? Open your mind before your mouth n legs - Posted from rhpmobile who are you talking to? I know we all make judgments but the post is referring to my experience where I was judged by the man on who I am based on the car I was driving at the time. I am not defined by my car if you read my OP properly? Maybe you can clarify your post? coz I ain't laughin at the moment.

Well I guess I am going to get some bagging over this but I currently drive a Merc, and before that a BMW, not because I like German cars but purely because of taxation reasons, so why not drive a nice car when someone else is paying for it.Yes its totally impractical for my other love, sailing, I cannot fit many sails in the back, lol, but one day I will get something more practical when I have to pay for it :-)By the way, I wouldnt buy another Merc :-(

I like to keep my car fairly current, hopefully to avoid mechanical issues and to keep the body work and interior in good condition to help with resale. As such I upgrade at the end of 5 years once the warranty or free servicing runs out. By upgrading every 5 years it also helps to keep my kilometers below 100k. My cars are normally small/mid sized that are economical and cheap to look after. I think the presentation is probably more important than what you drive. I would apply the same to myself and the people I meet. Purchased a new Holden Cruze SRI last year.. probably won't mean much to people who don't know about cars; but the women that sit in the front seat seem to appreciate the heated leather seats during the cold months. Women like having a toasty backside?? If I want to get all 'wankery' I take out the motorcycle.. but it isn't the best thing to be taking out for a date in winter..

First time comment so here goes I don't know what the car I drive says about me to be honest. I love cars I always have and at the moment I have three of them, I would have more but I don't have the room. I have the cars I do because I like them & not for any other reason.

Does my car define me? When my ex and I split up, I lamented on this for a while: “How am I going to impress women in my Toyota Yaris friendly dad-car with kids’ carseats in the back?” And it took a while for me to realize that my car doesn’t really matter that much. (I mean, maybe the extremes do - if I drove a shiny Maserati or a creepy caravan with the windows tin-foiled over it would.) But does my little Yaris define me? Does my little apartment define me? No. It may reflect where I am financially at this point in my life. It may rub at me the wrong way when I think about where I should be as a 40-year old man in our society compared with others my age. Did it give me great joy when I went to NZ and got an orange 2014 Holden Commodore as a hire car and put the hammer down while cruising around the gorgeous green hills of the North Island? Hell, yeah. Is there a secret hoon inside me who wants to get out? Yeah, maybe that, too. But to quote the philosopher (and noted psychopath), Tyler Durden, “You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis.” Okay, sure. Tyler Durden does turn out to be fucking nuts. But he makes some good points. I know that I am more than my car or my house or my clothes. I know that there’s more to me than what most people see. The people that I care about and that care about me also know that.

I just dont like people telling me my car is crap even if it is? Lol. Like I care what car they drive. But you are happy with yours and you have them for a reason. Am ok with that. It makes a lot of sense. I do like the idea of heated leather seats. NOICE!!! Lol.

every car have a buyer, and every woman have a man😜 We can drive : old, new car, ute, wagon , and be happy We can have slim, large, sexy, ugly woman , but chemistry is important:) If I have good chemistry with woman I don't care is she sexy or no , slim or large body, This is same with cars. I had : 4 HOLDENS 3 Commodores 1 Magna Now I drive Mercedes C180 compressor, I love this car😘 But I love and my FORD UTIL RTV 3 sits with canopy, under canopy can fit up double bed madras , and can have fun ewerywhere: streets, car park, and if is couple with me can have sex during driving, one man driving , and one having fun, beautiful, did someone try this? I couldn't give a stuff what anyone drives... I have a nice car ( cars ) but don't ever think of them as a sign of anything but transport.. When I meet someone it's on mutual ground without a car in sight.. I'm more interested in the person not what they drive..

Quoting 'Whateverway' but the condition its kept. Empty coffee cups, old macca bags and crap rattling around tells me a lot about the owner. Bit like the state of their appearance. Unkempt, l wont go there. Doesnt have to be the best or the latest, just look after it as your personality dictates. I agree with Whatever sounds like I am too easy, sorry. I agree with Whateverway. Its is how you look after it, service it regularly, keep it reasonably clean & tidy, hey, even check the oil level and tyre pressures occasionally. Mine is a company car that I don't have too much say in, but can't complain. Still have to clean, tidy and check oil and tyre pressures though.

More often that not, the car that you select does say a little about your personality (colour, style of car etc; not specifically referring to cost/brand). The sad fact is that quite a lot of people are stupidly impressed by material things, which explains why some try to brag about their possessions as a conversation piece. My experience - I (Mr.) was on the hunt for a BMW Z4 last year as I always loved the shape and design of it but I ended up buying a Civic Type R, which was my other favourite (growing up with Hondas). I remember the comments vividly.. "how do you go from a BMW to a Honda? Ugh", "that THING looks like a Prius" etc. Ffwd to two months ago, I bought a Z4 as I found one that I liked at a good price..again..the comments "Oh wow, congratulations! I'm glad you're not driving that Honda anymore" "Finally, a good car!" "You are so awesome!" Wtf? I was unaware that I bought my car to impress you . Frankly I don't care about opinions. I just buy what I enjoy..while my car does say a bit about my personality, it is not what makes me as a person.

I don't like to have a daily driver that is too new, or too valuable. Things like rough roads, kangaroos, not to mention my desires to go properly "off road/bush" are rarely good for the suspension, paintwork, bodywork etc. But in light of the possibility of having any lady's interest, I've gone for the happy medium of a Subaru Outback. - Posted from rhpmobile

I drive a Toyota hybrid. I love it and drive a lot in it without breaking the bank on fuel. No one has dissed it yet. Actually, it's been positive comments so far. I'm thankful for someone to give me a ride so normally thank them rather than criticize what they're driving. Seriously, who criticizes their ride? - Posted from rhpmobile

Cars are OK.........I'm really not the type to yak on endlessly about cars or material possessions...... but I do find this topic quite captivating .... I have a car, it is OK. I bought it because I thought it would suit my purpose....... sometimes people say "I like you're car!" how the hell am I supposed to respond to that? ..... I usually say "I like your shirt, where did you get it?" ......... at least my response has some direction to it ...ha OP Lamborghini's aren't always owned by wankers .... but it is fair to say that there is likely to be a greater proportion of wanker in Lamborghini's! What I'm trying to say is that wankers come in all types of cars and its not the car that you need to worry about it's usually the wanker in the car that is the problem!

Soon nobody will be allowed to drive. Google car has done millions of km driving its self. In the next ten years all the truck driving jobs will go to robotic trucks, and then us commuters will be removed from the equation. Even now the google car is so much better at avoiding accidents. We stupid humans have an accident every 100,000km on average. While google car has yet to crash and it is estimated that it will have an accident every 30 to 100 million km. We are most likely the last generation that will ever have to drive a car. I just love progress.

Does the car a woman drives define her? Not necessarily, but the state she keeps it in does. If her car is a pigsty than 9 times out of 10 so is the state of her house. And if she CBF'd learning how to check the basics such air, oil, water, tire pressure etc. than I find it hard to believe her rants about being a "strong independent woman". For some people their choice in cars is dictated by practicality not choice, in this case all it says about them is their life choices e.g. Owns a mini van - probably has a dozen kids. For those who like to modify their cars it's a whole other deal, and I could probably write a novel on the subject. The short version goes like this - To build/modify a car properly takes vision, dedication, patience, and common sense. Qualities that I imagine are desirable to most. In contrast people who drive a car that looks as though it's driven through Super Cheap Auto and had every item in the shop thrown at it tend to have qualities that are opposite those mentioned above. Of course I'm stereotyping, but stereotypes started for a reason

I am on the road the whole time during work. So I love to have a comfort and trouble free drive. I have Merc Vito and love it. I change my car very 3 years so that I can experience different cars. I think they are a necessity nowadays and one should be comfortable what they are driving and don't worry about others.cheers

Don't worry, I dont really worry what people think about my car else I will be driving something else. i choose to drive my cars for a reason. When I bought my Nissan Xtrail, i did a lot of research of all the SUV on the market as I need the car to go on trips with the kids to the snow, long drives interstate (drove to Murrigidore and Byron with lots of kids stuff) and some off road driving. I compared the reviews on SUVs of same size based on the reliability, petrol consumption, parts availability and replacement costs, warranty, repair costs, re-sale values, luggage compartment and of course looks. Nissan came up tops. Had my excel spreadsheet to prove it. Lol

My self I have two cars which I show and get different reactions from people have an old 58 two door morris minor which every where I stop some one tells me there parents or grand parents had one and how they went on holidays I say how did they all fit in, I fine it get as it brings back memories for people. The other is a big old Statesman De Ville which I us for cruising. So how can I be judged driving two different style of cars.

I like my car to be practical. I work in an office but at weekends I like to camp and disappear into the bush. So, I drive a 10 year old dual cab. I don't use it enough to feel guilty about the engine size, it has 5 seats with the extra benefit of a tray. I'd love a lambo, but that'd be for my experience. The way I see it, your car doesn't define you. Your shoes however… that's something I notice. Haha. - Posted from rhpmobile

In my profession (wealth adviser) I deal with some very very wealthy people To some of them cars are important so they buy the top end (Maserati, Mercedes etc) to other not so important so they buy good reliable cars but not the Expensive Cars. They prefer to spend their wealth on investing, holidays, assisting family etc Point it it means very little and a car should not make judgment on who you are For the record I have 2 cars ... Lol...One a Honda one a Mercedes ... Means little but what's appropriate for my circumstances and position

My "cars" definitely define me. Just as they define anybody else. no, you don't have to have the flashiest cars or bikes or boats but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PEOPLE! Make sure your car is respected. Both maintenance wise and clean! My daily car gets washed 3 times a week (grey water) and waxxed (1, 2 or sometimes 3 coats) once a week. I don't have any leaks, seeps, rattling, ticking or rust in ANY of my cars. (considering i have cars from the 60's and 70's I think thats pretty good?) Take care of your car and it'll take care of you! Happy to give advice/help anybody who wants to learn more? :) - Posted from rhpmobile

it happens both ways. I went on a date with a lady from here and took my commodore as I had lent my hilux to my dad for a few days at the time. its low, loud and obnoxious but it serves a purpose for me and that's drag racing. legally of course. she turned her nose up at it when I started it to give her a lift home. I actually have 3 cars and they all have their purpose. the hilux is my main drive car and I throw all sorts of engine crap in that back of it. I have the ss which a I rarely drive and I race it when I can and I just bought a landcruiser to go 4wding in.
